Here's a short looping cracktro-style Commodore 64 tune I made for CSDB's Crack Intro Music Compo 2013. It placed 57th out of 83.
It was subsequently used in an actual C64 cracktro: http://csdb.dk/release/?id=118971

That gets a lot of things right-- "and more importantly", actually sounds like a real 1980s-era intro tune in terms of melody and performance. (The only real difference is that original intro tunes were shorter and (ab)used repetition more...)

I've never figured out the mindset of the 'chiptune' judging community... (are they 18 year-olds who think everything should be gameboy-piezo or DAC'd...?)

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you find the style "authentic", it's what I was aiming for. I wouldn't say original cracktro tunes were shorter - this one plays for a bit under a minute until it loops.
My tune would've placed way higher if a couple of persons hadn't given it very low ratings for some reason and thus brought down the overall rating - 8 and 7 out of 10 were the ratings I was given the most.

The judges low score was more than likely due to favoritism..probably due to a few friends in the contest. I'd of ranked this highly as a child of the 80's this it rather complex by any standards and I do remember a lot of these songs running around 30 seconds... not a full minute. It makes the loop less noticeable.
Great work. This brought back fond memories.

I always click music when I visit FA, but I'm always disappointed...
But this is really great. It has a very authentic feel, sounds catchy and interesting, and has just enough variety to it that it doesn't get boring. This is what game music should sound like :)
You deserved way higher than 57.
