Master and Apprentice slowly circled each other on the practice field. Twilight had faded to night and the sky had exploded with stars, the cool of the night settling in. Just enough time for
"One more round, please Master!" the young fenneckitten pleaded.
"You haven't won one yet, kit. And isn't it nearly dinnertime?" his teacher teased.
His student pouted, and his stomach chose that moment to grumble at him. "Come on, just one, pleaaaaaase?"
Jay smiled, warm memories of simpler times flooding back over him, of another apprentice long ago…
"Alright, one more round." He raised Hero's Tale to a comfortable not-quite en garde position, and pulled a small book out from his pocket. "I needed to finish this chapter anyway," he said with a twinkle in his eye. "Now then, where was I?"
His student grinned, his massive tail twitching as if stirred in an invisible breeze. "Aww, come on, at least take this seriously!"
"What? I'm holding back. Trying to give you a fair shot."
"Oh, you are going down."
"I'll believe it when I see it…"
Love this, by the way! I'm glad you had fun doing it! I'm already making plans for my next commission from you… ;)
