Update is live. Some things to note:
* NOTE: The new changes are NOT compatible with older versions of Internet Explorer (IE7). They can cause issues with IE8 or IE9 if you're running in compatibility mode. To disable compatibility mode, click the torn piece of paper in IE's address bar. This should resolve it.
* We're monitoring feedback and will be making minor tweaks throughout the day as we get additional feedback.
* Some people have noted that FA may not render/work right on some mobile devices/gaming consoles (e.g. Nintendo Wii). Officially, we do not support mobile devices or game consoles. That said, we will try to improve compatibility on those handheld devices (iOS, Android, Windows Phone).

FA Update changelog/notes.
* Users online feature implementation. Display current users online at the bottom of the page. Refresh every 60 sec. Page that lists the users and online status on userpages reserved for admins for now until an opt-out of it is coded for users.
* No notes feature implementation. Defines whether or not to disable the notes system entireally for a user. No effect on notes to and from admins.
* No guests feature implementation. Controls whether guest users have access to: userpage, gallery, favorites, submission view, journal list and journal page that belong to the user.
* Hide favorites feature. Allows one to hide their adult, mature+adult or all favorites from public view. Applies to favorites gallery and the favorites minigallery on userpages. No effect on admins
* Rewrite to the user settings storage backend, now works much faster which allows for more settings/options to be added, and more easily.
* Added the footer ads back
* Removed the horizontal ads on submission pages above the comments
* Fixed a bug in replying to comments that allowed to see the content of and reply to hidden comments. Code wasn't checking for is_deleted flag on the comment.
* Changing submission type icon overlays at the bottom right corner of thumbnails. Icon area is now 28x28 in size instead of the previous 16x16. Should make it easier to click on them, esp. on mobile devices.
* Changing filetype sprites, giving individual icons there more padding to allow them to be shown on a larger area.
* Changing behavior of description popups on image thumbnails; Are now shown via click rather then mouseover, and stay on the screen until a click is made anywhere else on the page.
* Changed the logic behind positioning and sizing of the description popups. Will now attempt to reduce popup width to end up being shown without scrolling off the page

it doesnt really fit into 1024x768 on my Laptop
-gives free internet-
My Netbook can only do 1440x700
Its only the Advertising that is placed under the FurAffinity Banner, so not a real problem
Second, given the size constraints of a laptop, such high resolutions are non feasible since the pixels would become to small to recognize anything.
Of course there are portable computers with higher resolution, however those are barely portable.
Another problem are so called windowing systems. On some types of computers (for example Unix ones) you split your screen into several so-called "windows". It is common to use a high resolution screen, for example with a width of about 2000 pixels, as multiple smaller windows. This also breaks the banners.
Over all, the web was always intended to be resolution independent. It should run on just about any resolution.
Mabey then it can prevent people from constantly sending message asking "R U ON?"
listen to this one!
Note to IE users: to fix most problems, most notably the fact that you use IE, upgrade to Chrome or Firefox. This message was sponsored by the whole damn internet.
And i dont trust google more i can throw an elephant...
I stay with IE8 and IE9...
Also, most countries simply viewing underage porn isn't anything legally 'wrong' or can get you in trouble, it's downloading it. At least last I knew.
And if you're that paranoid about your safety, you'd have your cache not saved or cleared on a frequent basis. :p
I actually don't really care, I'm just putting in a different viewpoint for the sake of it. Devils advocate almost I suppose?
.. okay i'm shutting up now :-|
Still wishing we had the commission tab back djfhsfgr;grjjhiwg5
So far it looks awesome. Gotta test all the features you say there though...
Any indication of how to? Tutorial? Something

My monitor can only support the maximum resolution of 1024 x 768. And the ads looks weird with this resolution.
The old header worked just fine.
* Changing filetype sprites, giving individual icons there more padding to allow them to be shown on a larger area.
* Changing behavior of description popups on image thumbnails; aAre now shown via click rather then mouseover, and stay on the screen until a click is made anywhere else on the page.
* Changed the logic behind positioning and sizing of the description popups. Will now attempt to reduce popup width to end up being shown without scrolling off the page
The sprites are now broken and the popups don't load on click, it just takes you to the submission.
Fixed it though. Thanks!
It works on all size screens better that way.
Besides that, THE SITE IS NOW EVEN MORE AWESOME THAN IT COULD EVER BE!
was that intentional? it's fun to pronounce though xD
this doesnt work for me. just wondering if anyone has the same problem. click and it takes me to the file itself, not just showing the descrip
just make a mobi.furaffinity.net for mobile uses that does this... the constant description is kinda annoying.
(There, have nightmares with FA + "biography" layout)
I only say "almost" because while it may be awful, at least this "update" doesn't make me lose my spot on the page every time I hit the "back" button...
and then they forget what the old layout looks like and we all move on.
and then the cycle repeats, forever.
I'm amazed the administrators haven't gone bat-shit insane from getting blamed/hated for anything they try to do.
Also, folders? Commissions tab? The ability to opt out of watching a person's journals? Any plans for these coming up in the future?
But yeah, I still don't quite understand the point of putting them next to the banner when they aren't the same size, ESPECIALLY when it removes their functionality. I know you guys aren't making a mobile optimized site, but breaking something that wasn't broken in the first place doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Design aspects aside.
Now please fix the thumbnails !
just btw
that, too
I'm using Safari on a Mac.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8044379/
Huh, this is strage. I don't even see how that's possible. Will try to find someone with a Mac to test this.
thought I was going mad when I couldn't log out (safari on mac)
The phone I'm using is a Samsung galaxy s2, using the built in browser, it shows up as mobile Safari 4.0 in the sessions page on the site, so it's probably Safari related.
Right now, all the submissions look like audio submissions based on the submission type icon in the lower right-hand corner of the submission icon. :I
It's pointless to have transparency if you have to fullsize the picture just to see it. :(
tho filters for what content you want/dont want to appear in your inbox would be nice.
Happened on DA, they simmered down.
Not really that big of a deal but I hate the drop down format of the menus because whenever I go to hover over 'site settings' or any of them on the last menu it's too sensitive and pops away a lot, back the previous menu.
Also, as someone who has always used the light skin, now usernames and other text that has already been clicked on is so light I can barely read it.
I hope you get your (and others with you) request as it seems reasonable to have.
i could see hiding favorites from guests, but all together to me
would make it more difficult for art to circulate the website
making it harder for Artists to get their name out there
i find new artists all the time browsing other peoples favorites
My gripe with it would be that there are way more important things/things people have been asking for forever that haven't gotten implemented yet.
and a chat system
But still. You know. Moving a menu we already have around and making it more bothersome is the way to go ; u ;
I'd just love to really see things important to an ART community instead of just updating the look and "flow" of the website. Not saying those things should never happen and aren't important but. I think that better organization of one's own gallery would be nice for many a people. But preachin' to the choir lol
Specifically I want the visited links to be a different color like it's supposed to be.
It's not an issue to fix these things, they're small; the problem is knowing about them and most people around here would rather spend two hours complaining then 5 minutes reporting the problem. I mean, FA being bad in everything is a trend and making remarks about it is currently a popular thing to do, heh.

A solution is being looked into.
..are broken. Makes them look like a jukebox.
Oh yay, three image submissions in a row, what do I win? :)
At this point, this is the site this is how it looks, I am doubting they are going to change it because some people are disliking it, they will either put up, shut up, or simply leave it all together. I guess thats the options here.
and I dont think the new lay out leads to being hacked.
I respect your opinion. But I think this is kind of cleaner, kind of. I think Dragoneer is still working out some kinks, if you keep reading. He is actually listening. But I dont think anyone is going to listen to some one who just flat out says it sucks and doesnt say why. If you dont like something explain why and give ACTUAL critique. Not just "fuck this it sucks." Or in your words "this is crap" *shrugs* more people would listen to you if your attitude was more pleasant I would think.
I dont like all the anger I keep feeling is all, I dont think the admins do either.
At least he Toumal gave a decent heads up to shut down of SF 1.0. Here, we only got a day to prepare for updates, well.... two since it came a day late.
I have no problem with site improvements, I just wish more focus went to the plumbing instead of the drywall.
Like I said, they had beta up for that particular reason so people had time to experience and prepare for the change. It is not their fault that you may not had taken advantage of it.
Seems everytime FA decides to update some it makes me want to come here less.
Your not changing it, and neither is the whining. So keep complaining and whining about it and hope it gets the right attention. Thats about all you can hope for dear.
As for the privacy, I and many others are still against that, why on earth would you join a community based on sharing art and being open then expect it to accommodate your social ineptness and insecurities by wanting to give the option to hide away and not talk to anyone? If you make an account to just view art and all you do is fav, I suppose that's one thing, but once you make conversational contact with anyone on the site through notes, shouts or comments, you should expect the same to be done back.
In my honest opinion, unless this directly effects you, why are you so concerned? Yes this is our site, our free site, people asked for changes, they got changes, dont blame dragoneer for something other people wanted. He was only looking out for his users interest. Dont blame him for actually listening. Dont blame scriggles for making him listen. Dont blame them at all. Blame the users who WANTED the change, not the ones that made it. Blame the ones THANKING the privacy settings not the ones who changed them, blame those who adore the change, not the ones that made them.
The admins did one thing, in my view, they listened to what the users wanted and they gave it to them to make it happy, probably because they were tired of listening to people complain about people bitching about what they are faving or people wanting to not have notes because its too complex and not viable enough to use, or what ever changes were made. The admins did not come up with the changes, the users did, the admins were just looking to better the site through the words and desires of what they were being asked. Blame the users, not the admins.
Just like with presidents, if you didnt vote for it, if you didnt voice your opinion BEFORE it happened, you honestly have no place to complain. It happened. They may change it even more, but give it time they are still working things out, and S.P. So what about sofurry. To be honest they are a completely different site run by different people making different mistakes. Stop comparing one site to another. To be honest, this is FA. Take it or leave it it is what it is.
That is the end of my little bit. Keep responding all you want but your just dancing around in the same circle and I am going to be saying pretty much the same thing and sticking to my opinions on this. Okay?
If the admins had simply been upfront about why the layout needed to change, I wouldn't been ranting at all. I'd still voice my concerns over the new privacy features yes, but I wouldn't be mad going at it trying to get Dragoneer or one of the administrators to tell us that it might be ugly but its only a skeleton for something better in the future plans for this site. Sometime people just want to know that their voice had been heard and taken into consideration, but like I said in the last paragraph, the admins were returning comments to those that praised the changes and for the most part ignored those who questioned or denounce the changes, politely or otherwise.
I'm over the header, its still ugly, but it functions. I put forth the suggestion of an alternate skin to have the old layout. Has there been any return on that? No, and by return I mean a reply from an admin or developer saying if its possible or not. That's the problem, even when we give suggestion and feed back if it doesn't say "We love it!" to them it seems to go ignored and unanswered.
And I think the reason they ignore it is because of how much flak they knew or had gotten on the changes, playing its going to happen whether they want it or not. But I do agree a reason should have been given. I understand now what you have been trying to say for some reason this seems more clearer than your previous posts. Thank you for helping me understand where you have been coming from.
Like I said, I said NOTHING against mobile users NOR did I say "Oh this is easy fucking peesy" Did I? No. I asked the fucking person WHY the said it sucked THAT WAS ALL. So dont blow shit up at me just because YOUR pissed that it doesnt work on your psp. okay? I rather think that was quite uncalled for.
*cough* Moving the menu text BELOW the FA image banner would help a little. *cough*
Also, I was under the impression that hiding favorites would be by a picture-by-picture basis, not by adult/mature,

This drop down thing is a major boner killer. :S
It makes Baby Raptor Jesus cry. :C
The dropdowns are not as easy to use as the old "click-click" method, but are MUCH improved from the beta version! When that came out, I honestly feared I wouldn't be able to use the site anymore! I've only mis-selected a few times. The "selectable" part of the menu is much more accurate than in the beta. Thank you! ^.=.^
We have featured submissions...how about a "Featured Favorite" option, for if we really like or identify with something we've favorited? Just something that popped in my head.
All in all...Pretty good, and the dropdowns work better than expected! :)
Thank you for reading my comment! ^.=.^
I can download images from any other site, just not FA.
It worked before, so it's not like the phone is incompatible or some weirdness. The problem is almost certainly on FA's end.
This site needs a complete makeover.
Also, stop whining.
To be perfectly fair, people can do that with this block system as well. If someone is really that dead-set on harassing another user, any block function can be circumvented. That doesn't make it "pointless," though.
TBH, I would really like to be able to block certain users from my page entirely, myself. I think that would be a lot more useful than ripping off Google's nav bar and moving the "Log Out" link to where our user page links used to be.
I had been having trouble with stalkers/trolls and this option would be SO SO good. :(
Or even if someone wanted to say bad things about someone else then they could just block them from seeing the page and talk.
1) Immature people will block others even for POLITELY disagreeing with them.
2) Some people will be pre-judged based on appearances (even if they didnβt do anything wrong at all).
3) Some people will use this new feature to coerce others or make demands for not blocking them (if you donβt have an icon I block you, if you fav and donβt comment I block you, if you donβt comment enough I block you, if youβre not a good enough artist youβre not allowed to watch me, etc).
4) It would make things easier for dishonest people like art thieves and scammers.
Iβm not saying nothing should be done, but
Worse yet, if anyone gets paranoid that new users watching them COULD be the person they blocked, they may end up blocking anyone that SEEMS liked the blocked person and end up blocking INNOCENT people.
This problem is just something that cannot be solved without creating new problems. :\
Otherwise, is it possible for you to go to the links directly by typing them out or bookmarking them?
THE
DROP DOWN
MENU
FUCK
I hate this shit FUUUUCCCKKK
The right side is extremely empty and the messages break down in parenthesis expands downwards instead of across. I've refreshed about 20 times so far XD it's not doing anything. Even clearing the cache and refreshing isn't working.
The drop down menus work which I didn't expect as you can only 'click', not 'hover' like you can with a mouse, though clicking on "Account Management", "Site Security" etc on a regular browser doesn't do anything there either. If it did then it wouldn't work on touch devices as you wouldn't be able to navigate down into the menus without 'clicking' a link and loading the wrong page by accident.
As the Android, iOS, BB and webOS (HP Touchpad) browsers are all based on webkit you could *probably* take that as meaning the site works ok on those too (though I cba to reboot my Touchpad into webOS to check), except where low resolutions/high DPI introduce faults.
Also, I don't know if it's just my large resolution but I HATE the banner and admin notice layout. I'm no graphic/web designer but that wasted space drive me nuts. I think this is much better.
I decided to disable my adblock(sorry D:) just in case I was wrong and yep! There are ads there. Now we have a smoosh problem if the browser isn't completely maximized.
Just thought I'd also mention that I happen to be fond of the new header. I thought the old layout was really awkwardly placed and jumbled on the right side. While FA's not the flashiest site out there, I don't mind too much because I prefer function over fashion, but that jumbled mess on the side always bothered me. With my adblock disabled, my browser completely maximized and pretending the drop down menus aren't there, I'm thoroughly pleased.
Though, I'm getting a lot of lag with loading pages now and I even got an error(twice) trying to submit this comment. :c Hope that clears up!
Haven't checked on my Android yet. But it's good to hear that I'll be able to soon. :)
Calm down, it's just a small change. It's really not THAT different.
Glad you're fixing things, though. I hope to see gallery folders and mass selection in the near future.

Now if the tool bar at the top stayed on screen at all times that would be amazing. Kinda like the one on twitter!
I'm not a huge fan of having to borrow my mother's laptop just to log onto a site I've been able to connect to without fail for almost a decade because some [censored] wanted to ruin everything for no good reason.
Both my PC's, both my PSP's, my smartphone and my Wii are now effectively useless for FurAffinity. *sigh* It's like DeviantFail all over again...
If there is no way to go back to the real/normal version of FA, is there another furry art page one can join that's as good as the old FA used to be?
People should not be using it. It was only good when it first came out.
My mom lives closer to me than anyone else I know so her laptop is literally my closest and easiest way to access this site now.
It sucks but as far as FA wants to be jerks that's my only option.
I'm gonna go hunt for other art communities to join now....
Believe me, I really would like there to be something effective for the legitimate cases, I just don't want them to implement a system that will create new problems in its place.
Can't rely on the artists of said adult pieces to check who's faving the adult stuff either, since they'll probably have more stuff on their plate than looking after children.
Justsayin'.
Regardless of how many there are, the flaw in the sites new design is enabling the minors to get to the adult material without any real risk of being caught, except by the artist themselves.
Now, I looked for an option to revert to the old display, but didn't find any. If there is one, that fixes all my problems with it, since I won't have to use the godawful 'updated' toolbar. If the toolbar is mandatory, please explain to me why ignoring the human brain's processing of visual information is a good thing.
Cute move to rename and move some menu options (such as the TTs) in the implementation of the menu bar without mentioning it in the changelog. Sure TTs are "personal" in a way in that each user generates their own set of them, but "My FA" is not where I'd expect them; "Support" is way more logical. But hey, good on putting the link to Fender in the menu.
Honestly doing something not strictly necessary (and an aestethic change is not strictly necessary) which you know will break with IE7 is a bit of a dick move. One thing I've considered a positive with FA up until recently is that the layout's been reasonably compatible with all browsers (drop-down menus aside) while e.g. SF very obviously didn't give half a fuck about IE users at launch. I have still been running IE7 on one of my computers because the UI changes in later versions annoy me.
(Also, "entireally"? I hope you realize that you're making that "must be a native English speaker" requirement for admin positions look even more ridiculous than it already was. Please proofread your newsposts and make sure all words you use at least exist.)
Why?
It worked fine how it did, this just added another click, making it less easy to read descriptions on the fly .-.
Plus if someone got blocked they could just make a new account anyway to avoid it. :/
Also I seem to remember only needing to hover over the type icon to get the description, rather than "click for description"? Or am I remembering things wrong and it was like that already?
Pros
- The bar up there...is sexy and I love it.
It matches the colors of the light theme (didn't tested dark...I hate the dark layout!), feels GOOD and not invasive/pushy/trying to touch you in a bad way.
- Everything is now tidy! ZOMG!
I loved the options of hovering over usernames for menu, instead of clicking. Just noticed that changed.
- Tested the thumbnails in mah phone. Though FA takes AGES to load (my phone is not THAT good), it was easy to touch the thumbnails!
- Disabling notes is finally here!
For all of you anti-social pricks that love to be emailed, now you can disable notes.
(I don't get why you would not like notes, but for people who hate them it's actually good.)
Cons
-Hide yo kids, hide yo favorites?
I don't get why you did that, but ok. It would be kind of hard for artists to get more promotion that way, but ok.
The good thing is that you can choose WHAT kind of favorites you want to hide. But it will still limit the probability of getting known.
- The option to hide from guests is cool but how about if you amplify it and add also blocked people?
I had been having trouble with stalkers/trolls and blocking just avoid messages...not them seeing my work or my page. It's still invasive (and stalking). That would be good to have!
Though not pushing, I know it would take time for anything like that.
- As someone said, people would probably use the hiding favorites to hide they are underage. But I'm sure there is an option of a better filtering of underage kids here...I think.
A small note:
I'm a moderator myself in a forum, and I know the feeling of changing stuff and getting everyone just complaining and saying "DON'T FIX WHAT WAS BROKEN!".
Users... Sometimes things that you think are ok are actually derping and don't fit with the project of site!
Admins (and mods) have to deal with testing the website you use, probably for free. We have to, we need to know if we can improve everything.
Admins have the most annoying and hardest work of all by having to deal with the stuff that mods can't touch.
So far, any improvement on FA is for good. I don't get why people complain or compare it to Facebook.
(Imagine a FA+Biography hybrid...come on, cry!)
So, I know the feeling, bros. Can't wait for the new stuff to start to show!
(Imagine a FA+Biography hybrid...come on, cry!)
Let me field this one, if I may? I'm probably in the minority of people using the site that actually liked the old layout better than this new one. Now sure, some of us in the future may grow accustomed to this new layout and most of the complaints that we have will go away with our apprehension and anxiety over the changes, but there are some of us that have one simple question. "Why not both?"
Why can't there be an option to have the old layout as well as the new layout? Surely it can't be that hard to program in and it would solve a ton of belly-aching for both admins/mods/ect and users. This change is sudden, and for some, not wanted. A common, similar action is facebook's Timeline, and I do believe that most furries, albeit highly melodramatically, associate these changes with the sordid mess that Timeline turned out to be. Truth be told, they absolutely love Furaffinity, and are merely afraid that this change will jeopardize that, which, to be honest once more, I can't say I blame them and somewhat even agree with their sentiment.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/...../#cid:26539837
Though I understand there are legitimate reasons for people wanting that, it can be severly abused. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/.....9#cid:26545413
I would prefer a way to control even further stalkers/trolls than just not having any kind of communication, since they can make a new account and try to make contact again. And the cycle just repeats.
But you're right, going through something like that would get SERIOUSLY overly abused by everyone.
It does open thousands of new problems if it's implemented, and we are just talking in theory, so I can't imagine how it would be RL.
I've personally watched a guy on DA, left him 6 nice comments (when I mean nice comments, I don't mean murry-purry comments, I mean I told him what he did well on like "you did really well on the shading and the coloring turned out realy beautifully").
He marked every single one of my comments as spam, blocked me, then created a journal saying "if you're not a good enough artist, you're not allowed to watch me".
Granted I don't NEED to be able to watch him, but it was an obvious abuse of the block system. If anything, I'm worried about the elitism, arrogance and coercion that will result from this and make the community less of a community. :\

and no matter how many times I refresh to fix it, it just goes back to being that way.
That's all I really notice right now. If I notice anything else I'll say.
Just refresh your cache or whatever the fancy terms are.
I keep refreshing but every other page it just goes back to being messed up. So refreshing it doesn't fix it for me.
I like the privacy upgrades, but I hate that so much is now in a drop down, menu...annoying to navigate from my phone. I know you aren't planning these upgrades around phones, but it's something to think about for the future, when/if you get around to it.
Also hate that I have to click the header to see my notifications, journals, etc. Those should be front and center, really. It's the first place I go when I visit the site, so why shove them behind an extra step?
EVERYWHERE
I do like the drop-down menus, but I feel that the header bar is a little narrow for my liking. It's cramped up there over the ads and is kind of lost to them. Just my designer POV.
HOWEVER: i do like how everything is now neatly at the top. THAT can stay.
"Just lie about your age and hide your favorites. You won't get banned"
There was nothing wrong with it before.
To me it feels cluttered.
I'm not really a fan of how it's set up now, nor, much, how it used to be, but I'd much prefer the way it was before over how it is now. :<
I'll confirm with my Safari test install when I get home, see if it's a Safari problem or an iOS one.

I got STUFF TO DO.
This is an inconvenience, seeing as how my commissioners only note me. :U
However, I get a 500 error anytime I try to check my messages, and if I select anything from a drop down menu, it doesn't do anything.
I'm using Chrome and I'm completely updated. Can't access my notes, can't access my submission box, can't access my comments/journals messages.
I can get to my front page no problem. I hope this problem will be resolved soon.
But I do like the bar on the top. Tis a nice change.
..And if it helps, I'm using Google Chrome
>90% of users revolt to its design as it is flawed and broken
>GO AHEAD WITH IT ANYWAY, STILL FLAWED AND BROKEN
great job
Remember this is a "live update". Things will probably fall off on it.
Hold tight AND WAIT. Calm, don't panic!
Srsly!
Also getting nothing but error 500 now. =/
Thanks a bunch guys :3
...nwn and mozilla firefox there is no problem .. I think so far o.o
Also, the resources that you are talking about are maybe four to five CSS scripts that are literally kilobytes in size, not to mention that once they are cached in a browser, they are no longer downloaded from the site, so the strain of resources is negligible compared to the image hosting services provided by FA.
And the exact amount of resources it takes doesn't matter; it's still unnecessary extra work to please a vocal minority. Plus if they keep one old version, then people will expect them to keep every single one and it will grow to a bit more than just kilobytes.
Every time any website changes people beg to keep the old version and it rarely happens. There's a reason for that.
But now, I drag my mouse down and it goes over the links banner thing and pulls up the drop-down and I accidentally keep clicking something ELSE rather than the banner.
It's annoying and I've done it about 20 times now.
I don't want to have to maneuver around the links just to click the banner :I
It's like the "hover tunnel" thing mentioned here; http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/...../#cid:26536181 by Furx.
Can't use the shortest distance to click the banner.
Cause I just tried to do what you usually do and it's simple to avoid clicking EVERYWHERE.
And I do it fast, I don't sit there and try to avoid the links, because I'm used to the links being below the banner.
Usually, I hit the Community drop down and manage to keep clicking IRC.
Like, I would have thought the entire point of favouriting images was so you could select a piece of art that you particularly like by an artist and have it on your page as a form of publicity for the artist - like saying "I really like this, I think other people deserve to see it!" If you're going to disallow people from viewing a favourite you may as well not have favourited to begin with. The public can't view it unless they have an account created that has adult content allowed. If you're that ashamed of artwork you're favouriting then don't favourite it, just save it to your harddrive.
It feels kind of disrespectful to an artist to favourite their work just to give them a number, but then not give them the credit and publicity they deserve or even EXPECT when you favourite an image. A great number of artists already find it frustrating that people favourite images willy-nilly without so much as a courtesy comment explaining why they liked the image. Now artists haven't even the option to be viewed from someones gallery. How incredibly contemptuous.
It seems incredibly daft that you would work to fix something that is not a problem, make it MORE of a problem, and then leave thousands of issues that users have been asking for for years. Instead of working on the option to disable favourites, you should have been working on the option to filter, or to create folders.
At least that's what I see it as, at least.
It's probably a safer issue than favouriting anyway because a lot of artists are prone to deleting galleries, so that way you won't have to worry about ending up with a dozen submission deleted thumbnails throughout your gallery.
I can see why people would think it's a good idea, but it defeats the entire point of favouriting. It's silly.
One thing I'd love to be added someday, if you could edit our watchlist like this:
http://www.iaza.com/work/120525C/ia.....6274878700.png
I am so SICK of seeing "STREAMING" journals and submissions, and I hate unwatching people for that, and I'm sure other might feel the same way, especially being bombed with journals everyday.
Done. :3
Just would like to see that here someday, that's all. c:
That kind of stuff would be awesome.
Like a special kind of journal or announcement in your gallery that reaches watchers or, if you want, post a small notice in a section of the frontpage.
But I'm sure that would take like TONS of teim to do, so I'm not sure if it's even possible.
Btw: The best thing from DeviantArt is probably that you can personalize EVERYTHING from people you watch, and even move them into special groups and such.
I love if a feature like that was added in the future. @u@
I never get why people complain about this. It takes about a second to delete a submission or a journal. o_o
Whhyyyyy
My mind is just boggled. :c And I go through a ton of journals a day.
I guess I am more laid back than other people?
idk why I am flailing at you. It's been a long day. Have a cookie.
I love it already ;3
I don't use IE as my primary browser, so the bugs for that browser doesn't affect me to much.
I know it's early, but the site seem slower than before. Hopefully this will improve as time goes on.
Overall, I have to say that I am not really impressed by this update.
However, the banner at the top is covering up one of the ads for me... I checked with a friend who uses a higher resolution, and unless she sizes down her browser window, it seems to look alright for her. This would tell me that it's probably just an issue with the way things are positioned. Thought I'd just point that out! C8
But since I use a 1024 by 768 resolution, it does make seeing the ads difficult. D: And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's having problems!
Except for that issue, I think it looks nice!
the sad thing is FA is home to me, I love the people I have met here, but not sure if I want to stay if I Can't even update my profile
How about if we take the old layout...And set it for mobile version?
Is that possible to do?
Well, putting everything up there is a good idea, but it just looks awful. It's nothing but a dull grey block with very plain words, looming like a stormcloud over FA. Some integration with the site design would be nice.
If you guys can have an option of a floating header then that would be fucking awesome. I really don't have any negatives to go on about. :3
Also, WHAT?! NO LIVE NOTIFICATIONS UPDATE?! [/hysterical_old_bitch]
I don't really like this change much, I always liked that you could read a description by just hovering over it. Maybe it is convenient for other users so...maybe give people a choice between "Activate Descript. on Hover" or "Activate Descript. on Click"?
Also, I grow ever curious about the Commission Information tab, as I've heard so much about how its used (never got to use it myself) and I really want to see it return to see how it works.
The modes and how to do this on Apache can be found here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288325(v=vs.85).aspx
Defining Document Compatibility
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge,chrome=1">
I use FireFox with the Add on Snap Links, and I noticed that when trying to view many submissions at once, the entire page suddenly disappears (goes blank) until I release the group I've selected.

Hell yes!!
Hopefully we will see a mobile version of this site soon!
Honestly this is the third or fourth time you've alienated IE users by outright breaking the website for us.
On a similar note, it would be enormously useful to be able to sort submissions into folders. Not sure how much coding it would take to implement this, but I for one would be very happy to see this.
I still have that "Summer Update" in my mind and wanting to see that than just an updated banner and the site header.
Maybe you could do various background themes, since it is boring to watch FA on "Dark" and "Default" themes and also looking forward mobile-friendly version of this site too, since itΒ΄s frustrating to check FA and wait for ages to get pics loaded on smartphone. And it is really annoying to constantly zoom test that you want to read
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h.....alidator%2F1.3
If it aint broke, don't fix it. While the old nav was not necessarily photogenic, it worked and it worked well. This is just awful and it makes FA into a google-wannabe. I love Google, but not this much.
Its obvious that this navbar is not for everyone. What I really think would be a decent fix would be to let users decide if they want this new navbar or if they would like to use the old style. It should not be that difficult to code something like that instead of forcing such a change upon everyone.
On top of that, "we do not officially support mobile devices" ...are you kidding me?! A site with this many people is committing suicide without having some type of workable version for a mobile device! Not everyone will always access this site via desktop or laptop computer. The best part is a mobile version is not that complicated. You don't even need a separate mobile version. If you want to take the lazy route, there is a CSS code that exists that automatically adjusts the CSS to work better on a mobile browser if the person has a user_agent ID that tells the code that it is using an ios or andriod device. It would be better than completely alienating mobile users, not to mention IE users, which unfortunately are still a significant number of people on the internet.
That said...
It looks ugly in the light/default style sheet
As for the rest of the site changes, the site is now broken on my android phone(which I know you are not supporting officially, but are taking feedback on). The problems pretty much all stem from the fact that the page is coded for a higher minimum horizontal resolution than my phone can provide, with the following issues:

The top row is too small to be usable without zooming, and could use some more white space at the top, I keep hitting the address bar or bookmark list of the phone browser when i try to open the messages links, which leads me to point 2...

The top row cuts off at "βΌ My FA" and replaces the message nav links with "(,)"; "Log Out" is nowhere to be seen. (I realize collapsing the messages nav may bee seen as a "feature", but as implemented it is just awkward, and I'd prefer to have my message count immediately visible)

The banner adds load at the top of the screen, and are under the main FA banner (as in they are being covered by it)
point four, FA tried to eat this comment; good thing I copied it before I submit it...
There are 2 things I'd love to see:
Turn on/off watching someone for journals and art separately.
A commissions tab per user.
Good to see the team's work launch!
Not that I love ads or anything but still :P
Fuck. Just...fuck.
Really, what I mourn here is that FurAffinity has actually had a decent site design for the eight-ish years I've been a member here, remaining refreshingly constant in a sea of stupid, fad-driven badness all over the rest of the Internet. Now it finally begins to succumb to the stupid. I haven't liked dA's bloated, Javascript-drenched site updates either, but it's less sad because dA was never good to begin with.
If any of this were in the service of anything useful, I might feel a little more open towards the noophiles; instead, it's as part of an update that hides things that were in plain well-organized sight before behind multiple layers of menus, which are laid out in the new Officially Mandatory "tablet" style where every line of text is surrounded by another line's worth of whitespace and every section of the page has to have a different background color, and introduces no new functionality that couldn't have been implemented without screwing around with what already worked.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the old site, even on an aesthetic level. Now we've got a big non-improvement that does stupid things like break because one column is too narrow for the content it's actually designed to contain. On top of which, actual site bugs like the gallery wrapping issues still haven't been fixed.
That's progress, that is.
The navigation was improved ten fold, because now instead of having to click into the control panel to do anything useful, everything is now readily available. On top of that, the old layout was a massive waste of screen real estate. The new layout is much more economical, and lends itself much more to customization through userstyles. The trend of technology is to be economical with space and fluid in navigation, and somehow I fail to see the downside. No, not everything is ready to smack you in the face and say "Hey, I'm here, come click me", but so long as you have five seconds to get the learning curve of the new site, there's nothing wrong with it. Hovering your mouse over a menu takes an extra second out of your life, instead of having to load another page just to get to useful navigation links.
Also, there were huge problems with the site, and those problems still exist. It looks like a website driven straight out of the 1990's, especially with its use of HTML table elements. It's a joke that the site still uses a table layout, as that kind of a layout has been considered bad design choice since the turn of the century. It doesn't lend itself to screen readers, it doesn't lend itself to CSS, and it looks like someone hopped into a web composer and went crazy with boxes, not to mention it adds worthless code to make the web pages more bulky for the browser to download. I'm baffled that you think the website was at all good before, especially on an aesthetic level. Time to move out of your grandmother kitchen of yours and get those stainless steel appliances with granite counter tops.
First off, I am all for CSS; it was a solid (if initially poorly-implemented) answer to a number of problems in trying to separate content and layout in HTML while degrading gracefully, addressing some very real areas where HTML did not "work just fine." Well-designed CSS-based pages even today can still be viewed with browsers far older than mine and be essentially readable, if not as pretty. (IE6 notably excepted, but then, it's IE6.) That's good design; it addressed real needs with good solutions and (when applied intelligently) still works with old tech.
So, uh, no, no I don't think CSS was a mistake, at all. Nice try, though.
(And hey, now that you mention it, a large number of modern programs run just fine on Windows 95! Matter of fact, I'm using the exact same browser on a Pentium 166 with 96MB RAM - and it's usable! Because it's good code that doesn't require any more than it strictly needs and doesn't purposefully abandon old tech just for the sake of being in the Cool Kids Club. And its functionality on modern systems doesn't suffer for that. A lot of coders could stand to learn from that mindset.)
But anyway, on to the new site design. First off, I'm speaking of it from an end-user perspective; things like HTML tables are more of an inner-workings issue, and I have no particular allegiance to tables. (Though I do find it funny how many people react to them like vampires to crucifixes.)
Aesthetically, I don't care if snobby noophiles sneer at anything that doesn't have gradients and light-up-on-rollover on every element and use at least three background colors for every page; the old site was understated, well-organized, and coherent. This right here is most of the old site with a fat incongruous menu bar slapped up top replacing a number of elements that actually fit into the design before. That's no kind of improvement at all. Also, transparent backgrounds (as on the menus) should warrant a death penalty.
As regards the menus themselves, like all webpage popup menus, they're too sensitive to movement, don't degrade gracefully, break the "websites are organized by page" paradigm that has been the fundamental principle of the Web since its inception, and break what should be the cardinal rule of all web design: "if you are trying to make a webpage more like an OS application, you are doing it wrong." And that's really all I have to say about that.
Oh, and my grandmother's kitchen was a wonderful place and a million times more homey and welcoming than any stainless-steel industrial kitchen I've ever been in. Just for the record.
Welcome to web 2.0. Or is this 3.0 now? All I know is that shitty, random, unneeded, unasked for, bloated, js-hell, website redesigns stated with the "web 2.0" craze. Its all either meh or "fuck this".
Darn. :|
At the very least, WHERE is the aggregation link? (the collection of friends' recent art and writing submissions)
I also wholeheartedly agree with the statement "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," and would gladly lend you a sledgehammer.
I'm glad I rarely use any of those options, it's so awkward.
Submissions aren't working for me on FF; it either give database error or fails to attach the image.
The dark theme has lots of issues on chrome, no idea . http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8046778/
But from many of the comments, it sounds like the dark theme is the forgotten step child the parents keep locked in the attic.
Like Opera, it doesn't even have a good rendering engine that could pass Acid3 with flying colors like Webkit or anything "better" of the sort, let alone its potential security problems. And like Opera, it's just proprietary software. On the other hand, I, and others, can customize the Gecko and Webkit layout engine suit my own needs if I wanted to, and If I learned how to, but not Trident or Presto.
People complain about FF or Chromium builds using too much memory, but that's so they can perform better with multiple tabs open and not have to use the file cache as much. I even have the file cache disabled. If you don't have adequate ram in your computer, then that's a problem (maybe in 1989), but at least understand that I support browsers based of the Gecko and Webkit engine, and hopefully, who ever is reading this, you may like them and support those efforts too and to stay away from IE and Opera. They are not that great.
Change it back to #7A8185 and I think many of us will be a happy camper for at least one thing.
Anyways, don't listen to what everybody is saying. They're just all crabby at the moment. I think everything looks good.
...does disabling notes clear all your notes? So if I enable it again I'll have an empty inbox? xD
Thought I might point out this typo that's under the last part of the "disable notes" section.
And personally I liked the other header version better with the number of comments, journals, etc with the space between them. It just made it easier to distinguish submissions from journals from journal comments, etc.
But I mean aside from that, I like the new polished look to it. :3
I really wish you would have listened to the rest of the site and not had gone through with this awful layout. I honestly preferred the old FA. You could have just updated that.
But you're going to do what you're going to do. Sadly.
If anything, please adjust the banner to fit in the middle, or accept larger banners, or something, because the tiny banner plus two ads on the side looks pretty fucking trashy. :S
*skips about in the new features*
And I don't really like the new ''Toolbar''
but for the overall it's good
Other than that, looks great!
Also, Google didn't invent the black navigation bar. :1 Seriously people, shut up about it.
And while its nice the site supports mobile users, there is a reason lots of sites have a mobile page
Can't access submissions or posted journals, comments, notes etc. The drop down menu also refreshes the entire page, it took ages to load to this point as well.
I can deal with everything else, i'd just like to say though i'd like the option to not tell the world if/when i'm online. I like my privacy so the opt out thing would be awesome.
If you made it an alternate color for the light/dark theme, making the light, fa's dark color and the dark fa's light color with the same text color you use for the text on those pages, it would blend better, and stop my hate for it. I'd also like to see a bit of transparency, but - honesty i'd be cool with just a color change.
Or have a third theme added that's black/grey/light grey so it doesn't look as ridiculously out of place.
I'm a dark theme user, and the black looks really out of place.
It leaves room for advertisements on the left and the right if you don't like the emptyness! :)
Oooh, new features....
when you looked at one page it got colored out a bit now it doesn't.
Is it possible to bring that back so its easier to see what was looked at?
Also on the activity log could you at least get the thing to group all IPs that are identical together? I don't get the point of adding a label to an IP address if it won't add it to all other entries under the same IP address.
Theme... really need a dark theme, this is just too bright imo... and there is no gradients, flash or any fancy stuff... run of the mill html so could we MAYBE get some new themes?
Sorry if this comes off as whining, but as a whole the entire update simply looks like is was designed to cater to a small number of users who are insecure and thin skinned.
Compared to the people who praised it, the people who gave suggestions to tweak the update to make it better (not completely get rid of it) and those who simply don't give a shit, it looks like you're the minority. Sorry :)
As for the other updates like privacy, well those are on this journal for the most part are praising it and strangely want even more. Those that are against it have simply gone quiet since Dragoneer isn't listening to what they have to say on the matter. I find it weird that community that is build on being so open and welcoming (with in reason) would allow for features that give it the impression of being closed off and unwelcome.
And honestly, despite how these privacy updates may come across to a lot of furries, they're fairly understandable. Considering that I use this name on a ton of different sites, and my FA is one of the top results searching for this name on google, I wouldn't necessarily want someone that knows me personally to discover some of the weird shit I'm into. ._. The reason why he's being so stern about this is because this update was mentioned and a beta of it was running months in advance. That, and, no matter what he does, he will cause drama.
Also, thanks for the watch. o.o
Everything looks good on my PC (Windows XP with Opera v. 11.50). However, as a few others have pointed out, I also use the Playstation Portable (PSP) to view Furaffinity. When checking the site last evening on my PSP, I was unable to view submissions or journals; new messages are cut off on the navigation bar, and one needs to manually type the respective URLs to view them (I couldn't remember the exact URLs for journals and submissions at the time).
I would greatly appreciate a fix for this mobile issue. Thanks so much for your time!
I had this exact problem with the beta site. This seemed fine earlier today, but when there was a slowdown with notes, this happened. Please fix this, or I cannot use this site...at all.
Second issue. Read journals and comments are not being highlighted in a different color. It makes it tough to see what is new and what is not.
I really need the dropdowns in front of the ads to take priority when they are down, not the ad. I can enlarge my screen, but they just don't have good "buttons" behind the word, like they're misaligned.
This is an Android smartphone, running 2.3, I believe.
Thanks for reading! I hope you can fix this...Otherwise I can't do half of the functions. Dropdowns and touch screens do NOT mix well.
But any menu choice over the banner is still not able to be "touched" on my phone screen. I keep getting the banner. I don't have this issue with notes, comments, journals, icons, dates, the post button...Just the menus over the banner.
That is my only issue...It effectively disables half the options for me, because I can't physically access them!
That aside...it works and I can adjust. :)
I don't really like this hover-click thingy, I found it way more convinient to be able to click-navigate yourself through the system.
The hover menu wouldn't have to be removed, simply make "My FA" clickable and add an overview page with all the control panel thingies listed.
viewing with firefox here.
otherwise all seems functional and some slight reduction in lag may have been gained.
and the banners at the top are chopped off, id suggest just putting them under the FA banner, but idk >_< i do like the ad banners here and hate to see someones ad hidden from the sites banner. do hope you tweak it.
other than that i like the new updates bravo guys ^^ bravo. tiz very lovely additions.
I'm just here to laugh at the 4:3 users that can't just seem to window their browser and expand it a tiny bit over the screen width. Voila, no more overlapping ads.
So close, yet so far from 1366x768.
Advertising seems more tempting to me now. >_>;;;
Perhaps a way to go back to the 'classic' layout, so users can choose which one they want to use?
Thank you for all your hard work.
My only real concern is the ads. As I said, I'm on my home computer (and HP laptop) and my resolution is thankfully at 1280 x 800. But, yesterday when I was on another computer (a desktop) the resolution was at its max which tapped out at 1024 x 768. The advertisement banners were cut off in the upper left side. There are two banners at the top of the screen...the one on the right was completely visible while the one on the left was about 75% covered by the site banner. I know the problem is that computers that have a lower resolution will cause this to happen, but I also know that a lot of people still have older computers/computer monitors. Some people just can't afford to buy a new screen or a new computer. That's understandable. But, even so, the people who have purchased ad space are losing out because their ads aren't being seen by all its potential viewers.
I'm not a computer programmer, so I honestly don't know how this can be fixed (it may already be fixed, I can't tell on this computer) but, perhaps we can move the ad banners around so that they're not hidden by the site banner...or...perhaps we can just have ONE advertisement banner at the top so that none run the risk of being concealed by the site's banner? I certainly don't feel good about buying ad space when it can be covered up by the site's imagery. It would be a waste of money.
That's really the only concern that I have. Thanks a bunch for listening...er...reading!
And specially regarding "blocking".
Blocking logic goes like "don't talk to poo-poo head, he is mean" or when teacher told you to don't talk to the bully of the school. It works? Yes.
It's easy to evade? Hell yes. Make a new account with any mail you can make out from nowhere and there, you can keep on creeping everyone out.
If you can't make someone you block just leave you alone and see any personal information you have (had to take out tons of personal info of how to contact me from my profile, except my skype that I barely use), then you at least would expect for FA mods to take care of trouble tickets as they should.
As an example, I got stalked by someone who sent me a threatening note.
The Trouble Ticket got solved like this: They banned the account which sent the note. They didn't banned or warned the guy that made the account in the first place, even though I gave information enough to point that out. Oh, and told me to block him. (YOU DON'T SAY? That was the first thing I did...!)
Banning a fake account is like killing a decoy dummy.
The solution wasn't even what you would call "correct", since even a normal member would realize they should send a warning to the original account of the stalker and ban the fake accounts. But this was a half solution that solved pretty much NOTHING.
The guy is still there, untouched, after sending me a creepy as fuck note.
And I'm sure I'm not the only person that suffered such situation in here as well.
So, I do want to have more privacy, at least regarding blocked people.
Not because I want to be a softy cake or something, but because this kind of actions aren't solved right and it seems I HAVE TO DO THE JOB FOR THEM.
Sadly, I know this kind of stuff can be abused pretty much by dramaqueens and more. ANYTHING can be abused, if you want to get to the point.
So I'm cool with not having more privacy settings regarding that subject of blocked users, even though I want them.
About shouts and notes: I don't know why people don't want them. They just don't like them.
The option to block notes was asked and pretty much every artist I follow asks to don't be sent notes.
Probably they get lost? Or sometimes the site fails and they can't see important information regarding their work? I think I read someone saying such thing in this journal or another one.
As for the actual blocking, like I said before even with a full profile block one can still by pass it by creating a new account. If they are one of those stalkers types then they will probably make themselves known for what they really are. Then there's a rarer type or maybe not so rare depending on the number of softy cakes on the site, but there are those who really appreciate the art work of a user but that user blocks them because of an argument or something rather petty so they make new account and keep quiet about it. With this in mind it would be better to just have a block keep them from using Watch, as well as keeping them from faving, noting, shouting, and commenting. If they make a new account to get around that, it can bet dealt with then.
Shouts and notes its rather funny, cause you have the option of deleting them if you don't want them, and just so you don't come off as a dick, just make mention of the practice on you profile. Something like: "I don't read any notes sent so please don't bother, also I like to keep my page clean so I delete shouts frequently". As for notes getting lost, well it just happens from time to time. It hasn't happened to me yet and I've been on the site for over six years now, but I can imagine that it does happen. That's not really a good reason for disabling notes though.
Nothing was done, just the ban of a probably already abandoned troll account. Oh, and "talk to the hand".
And I know you can get past blocking. I have this stalker and a new one that did just that.
Stalkers can be tricky, sometimes they only make an account to send you a note or a message and later on don't use it anymore.
They should keep a control for such thing, specially regarding new new accounts.
I already saw some people complaining about false bidders that have fresh new accounts.
But I know it can be tricky to try, probably, so ok.
And what you say about notes and shouts is already been done by some users. They do clarify why they don't want to use notes or be left shouts on their page.
This new option of blocking notes is useful for them. Some artists leave an e-mail in their profile to replace the notes, so maybe they prefer e-mail over notes to keep track from outside of FA over their commissions and all.
But sadly I don't fully know. So far notes had been working for me, so I don't touch that feature.
Also, I'm asking that you please refrain from insulting others. Let's try to keep this civil, mature, and respectful, even if you don't agree with their requests. It is more important to politely educate others on why that's a bad idea rather then make derogatory remarks at them. Their side has validity too.
But I do still stand by asking you to please be careful with your wording in the future. It's not going to help your cause, nor will it be more likely that people will understand your side if you're insulting them.
Anyway I'm really new here still but the update looks lovely. =D
Its the right file but all it seems to being allowing is swf files and nothing else.
*Takes out hammer and duct tape*needs to be fixed >;o*pokes fa with a jam sammich*
Is there anyway to tone that down a lil? I have bad eyes so I have a hard time seeing the cut off on the menu's. I use the dark skin because its easier for me to see, but the menus blend in too much for me.
Thanks its made using it while mobile fun again.
Why?
i liked it where it automatically pop up without you needing to click on the icon for the description, was this necessary to change? you guys are such a disappoint, & the new features are jsut meh, maybe the note is ok, but hiding favs, & hiding your page from guests? i would never use those, i don't see why i would, i don't like the idea.
i was expecting something better but i know this was coming, the new site look is looking stupid not user friendsly as before, it was previously better.
Some of us are just so DAMN software illiterate that we don't even know what you said, or what we want until after we see it.
Thanks!
Makes it muuuuuch better on the 3DS. Thank you.
Just spotted a problem with this: any new submission is still shown on the front page, username, title and thumbnail.
You still need to login to view it if you try to click through, though.
