Gaia & Her Protectors - Meryk Background

During the time when the earth was being born from molten rock and water, and that produced life that evolved, there has always shadows to everything. For every light, there is darkness. Sun, moon, stars... There is darkness and the void. From the void spreads all seeds of chaos and destruction, but without creation of anything, anything at all... light, creatures, etc. there is usually the 'void'. From this void are all the destructive forces AND truly evil, and destructive creatures that have plagued mankind from the dawn of time itself.
Gaia had tried creating many different types of magical creatures, to protect herself from anything the void thew at the mother of all. To protect the Eath from this void, and the creatures that were produced from that void, Gaia decided that beyond just normal magic was needed to perform this task, because time and again her special protectors, her "scutum" (shields), would win against the void, but eventually would falter... because the void would find some way to adapt and change... to always be able to eventually defeat any protector the Gaia created.
Gaia took essence from the void, and combined the essence of some of her finest protectors from largest and smallest to create what would known as her scutum, her "shield" rather, though in some cases perhaps a sword too. The highest of these shields though, in a special class / case all his own is a Ngao (Swahili). This is where the creature known as Meryk was born, but included with a normal protector of Gaia, the addition of material from the void, that was not of Gaia.
Physically he looks like the mix of three distinct creatures: Sabretooth tiger (smilodon), Dire wolf, prehistoric bear, bison, and badger. He is better than all the sum of his parts, of any protector that came before, and any after because Gaia has not been able to incorporate the void into any since his creation because the "taint" to create even he was too much for Gaia. She almost created a beast that could destroy even her when she created a Ngao.
The name "he" calls himself was more of a recent concept, due to him not really doing much or interacting with the normal populace. He has gone by many names in the eons he has lived.
Meryk is the only one of his kind, and has not been able to be 'bred' per say... None of his powers that were given from the void have ever been inherited or passed down. Since his creation Gaia has made other protectors, unbeknownst to Meryk as a back up plan in case "he" were to ever stray from his path as a "shield"...........
