The Ngao

The word itself is Swahili for - "shield"
Known as a protector of Gaia, he has been around for millennium, and now is one of the oldest of Gaia's protectors. There is only one, and seems can only be one such as he, for it took so much from Gaia to create a guardian beast of his caliber. Since his creation she has been almost in perpetual slumber, only able to awaken in the direst of circumstances. For the most part using her protectors to act on her behalf... to pretty much be her everything, eyes, ears, etc. to protect the earth and all of it's creatures great and small.
Meryk usually stays in an ethereal form much like that of most magical creatures... unseen to the normal "naked" eye. It has only been recent that he has chosen to take a more active role in the world and made himself more physically seen. He chose the name Meryk mostly to give people something to call him when he deigns to interact with the normal mundane masses.
He has many powers as a "scutum", a shield of Gaia, like other smaller guardians beneath him... If one were to rank all guardians in some form of hierarchy the Ngao would be most powerful, followed by all others, which usually protect their own domain, on down, like to specific forests, etc. and hardly venture from where they were placed, or for what purpose. The Ngao is able to adapt and change, due to the void in it and is not bound to any hemisphere, or special landmark, or anything of that nature. It is able to go about freely surveying all.
The Ngao is able to though, call upon other guardians for help (including up to even great elementals from the tectonic plates), especially in a few of the most epic battles since his creation to fight against the void, and all forms of "scutum" (shields) great and small of Gaia to protect her.
Very few of the other guardians are able to call upon any others for support. Usually needing a druid, or medium of some sort to act through for such instances. Meryk is not one that needs that. He is able to come and go as he pleases and that irritates many of the other guardians, especially those that can not act outside of their designated region of influence, but none dare speak ill against him, but most are wary. Unfortunately, most do view the Ngao as a loose cannon waiting to fire against Gaia and blame him for her almost eternal slumber. Unbeknownst to them he is working very diligently to try to help her recover in any shape form or fashion, no matter how small, or insignificant it may seem. He feels a great debt to mother earth for his creation that he will never, ever, truly be able to repay.
He is an adaptable and ever changing being, unlike most other creatures and guardians made by Gaia. This void within him always in a state of flux, that has most at unease with him. Due to this, he has decided to make frequent visits to mortals to co-mingle and interact with. Through these interactions he has learned lots of how the rest of the world views mother nature, and do not even know of, and most, not even care about it or it's protectors. That fact, the "not caring about Gaia / the earth" attitude, has angered Meryk, but he has learned a valuable lesson called forgiveness...
He has forgiven those that transgress the Earth, not always exacting direct punishment upon those that one might deign are a blight upon Gaia. He is a benevolent being, and some of the guardian beasts think of him almost on the same level as Gaia herself and are that afraid of him, some admire him and wish to be like him, others wish nothing to do with him.
Unlike some guardians that go through death/rebirth cycles, the Ngao has never aged. Likely being immortal, or something of that nature almost like that of a god or demi-god. He has magical powers given to him from mother earth, as well as being able to call upon the dark void that resides within him. Even he himself is afraid to tap too much into those powers from the void, but has had to on occasion during some very intense battles.
It is due to all the constant battling and strife, that has had this being decide to drop down from upon high and take enjoyment and excitement in the normal day-to-day regular life of "normal" people. To satisfy that ever changing tumult that is inside him, and to satisfy his curiosity.
