Some Fans Don't actually like thier Favorite characters
4 years ago
Took me oddly a long time I put this together, bit so many members of a fandom DON'T actually even like thier Favorite characters, rather they are fans of thier Appearance and nothing else. Take the Infamous Onceler fandom, a fandom based on a character from the Lorax, that doesn't like movie or the book. The whole fandom focused on the appearance of the character and stereotypes projected onto him. It had a huge fanfic cross over where countless fans created person's that where all diffrent but for one thing, they all Physically looked like Onceler, not one acted like him or had his personality, just his looks.
This also extends to fans who draw and write Fics about a character, where sad character has a different back story and acts in a totally different way.
I'm always wondered why Sepithroth from Final Fantasy 7 had a huge fan base. Now I realize it's because his fans liked the idea of a Goth, Silver haired, Bishioden guy and ignored the fact the actual Character is an omnicidal, inhuman monster who if you sad you loved him would kill you dispassionately with out hesitation.
Terrible or bland characters get followings based on an appealing design, the "fan" just projects what they want onto the appearance. They treat them like blank slates, with no value beyond being short cut in creating a OC or persona. It's easier just lift the character design from someone else than make your own. It's why so many fursonas look exactly like existing characters with minor cosmetic tweaks.
This is also why Twilight was popular, Bella Swan is a blank slate by design, so the reader projects Edward and Jacob's obsessions on to them selves. It's not the story of Bella is the story of the reader/viewer being romanced buy a powerful male they have total control over.
It makes me kind of sad how so many "fandoms" attach it incomplete projects because as long as the project is in progress the fans can project the personalities, motivations, likes etc on to the characters that match themselves. Once the project get made a large portion of the fandom will leave because the characters now have defined personalities and are harder to project onto. If a character is established as in a relationship with another well then they can't be paired with who you think they should be with, yes some will insist the way they projected is the way it "really" is.
