Neerblog: FA's position on NFTs
General
I've gotten quite a few notes about NFTs, my position on them, as well as that of the site's.
TL;DR - NFTs are a dumpster fire filled with horny radioactive fire ants all lookin' at you like a snack. We don't want that here. You don't want them here. We have zero intention to implement or support them, at least in their current incarnation.
More in-depth response: as a technology, NFTs introduce some potential interesting concepts, especially towards helping artists monetize their work. But that's not really how they work in their current implementation. As it stands, NFTs are cheap stickers over digital pogs. They're the modern day of Beanie Babies at their initial rush, and everybody is charging head first into them to be "first" so they can try to gain net profits. The environment is rife with scams, Ponzi schemes, and offers zero real benefit to artists at this time.
In this rush to be first, it generates sustained levels of toxicity, as the so-called crypto bros spam the airwaves with noise, screaming how great NFTs are. Pushing. Always pushing. I mean, they have to. If you're own Twitter you've probably seen it. It's everywhere. Their ONLY goal is to convince YOU NFTs are a good thing, because the more people that believe they're worthwhile, the more their value goes up, and the better a price they get when their flip theirs.
We don't want to attract that crowd.
So we'd rather just... not. That's the best way I can put it. We'd rather not. At least not now. Maybe in the future, after NFT 1.0 have burned to ashes, somebody will take the concept and make something of interest to artists. The potential is there, but the current implementation is nothing more than the "https://betanews.com/2008/08/08/apple-pulls-1-000-app-store-gem-after-eight-downloads/".
Nobody's going to remember your Lazy Lions, and our team of investigators still haven't found Lindsey Lohan's ears yet.

FA+

But NFTs are not part of that plan.
So anything that's going to attempt to shake up the status quo as far as that goes is an exciting time. I look forward to more info :3
Rd: It's an expression.
Me: Dude, I lose sleep at night when I can't understand stuff like this!
RD: Your IRL self is arguing with your dragon self again....
RD: You don't recognize most actors or music artists....
Me: True.
Right now they are screaming "I believe in fairies" with the hopes that others will as well because if people don't believe in them, they don't have value.

That being said, one should remember this is FA and mainstream society otherwise: The real question is for how long we're even allowed to talk about them, before they become the next offense people get banned or lynched for. Since we all know that's how it goes for everything there's disagreement over these days...
With NFT's this may not be the case as they aren't such a sensitive social issue like other things... I think, honestly I don't understand how people work past a certain point any more. There are environmentalists who think misusing blockchain is killing the environment, so if users and supporters of the technology will become the next evil of this world in the public perception it's probably going to be over accusations of killing the environment.
"I just don't understand why people complain about SJW's so much"
The harm it does isn't just some made-up boogeyman. It's a legit concern.
NFT and crypto bros love to think the whole world is out to get them.
There's no way you can genuinely be aware of the 1,000s of injustices in the world right now and put "the lynching of NFTbros" up there as one of your top concerns.
In the broader sense and as there seems a bunch of New And Exciting Tech Stuff on the horizon, I think partnerships and cross-promotions with other purpose-built endeavors makes a lot more sense than FA itself integrating The Stuff and Things directly. I like my gallery sites to do gallery things and my sales sites to do sales things and whatever else things separately. Maybe I'm old fashioned but it's both more reasonable to the backend devs and healthier for the overall ecosystem.
Cackling~
Cryptocurrency is just energy laundering.
They still eat hard-drives. Cryptocurrency has no place in this world.
FA: We exist. We actually don't use a feed!
SoFurry: Like FA, we police our ads!
Weasyl: See we have shinies and allow you to put things in collections instead of reposting!
Furries: Eeeeehhh...
Twitter: We have no loyalty to you, are nigh impossible to find things on, and are 100% loyal to ads above all else.
Tumblr: We are like if Twitter and deviantART had a baby that inherited every negative trait!
Furries: Hot damn sign me up!
(Not to judge, cause I'm mutual with a lot of yas and more power to you.)
That content is obviously a no-go on FA and with it now being banned on Tumblr, Twitter is the most accessible place for it. So it only makes sense that furries will gather and combine both their personal goings-on with art browsing.
people legit pay millions of smackaloonies for a shitty jpeg picture of a Default Settings monkey
=^.,.^=
I do know that sites that support NFT don't force it on their users, but they could attract those crypto bros, which is why I'm glad you don't plan on giving support to NFT.
as a technology, NFTs introduce some potential interesting concepts, especially towards helping artists monetize their work. But that's not really how they work in their current implementation.
The thing is, due to data limitations it's impossible to store images on the blockchain. NFTs are just an URL stored on the blockchain - if what that URL links to changes, or the person who sold it to you stops paying their webhost fees, you lose it. That's all an NFT is and there's no real way to change that.
So I'll put it bluntly: I have zero interest in ever integrating crypto into the site in any form.
I don't think they'll be good in any incarnation. Much like the concept of the Meat-A-Verse being permanently tainted.
(Agh, Foone, you've permanently tainted me with the "mung buzzwords" meme.)
also, EVEN FUCKING NEOPETS IS DOING THEM. Which is fucked up.
NFT? NO FUCKING THANKS.
Also I forgot all about that I Am Rich app haven't heard anyone mention that in years lol
At least with Beanie Babies, they have physical substance... even though they are practically worthless plush dolls produced en masse.
Seeing companies like EA & Ubisoft hop on the bandwagon and those like Discord considering it is absolutely sad and disappointing to see. Also, I am absolutely baffled why companies like Toys R Us (the 3rd incarnation of it) & Hasbro are keen on promoting them when they're target audience is mainly KIDS. If we're going by the logic that doing anything crypto-related like NFTs is like gambling, shouldn't it be illegal to sell these things to under 18? It's so gross.
Nonetheless, I'm glad to hear FA won't dive into that sort of NFT nonsense. At the end of the day, they have absolutely no value and are just a bunch of random letters and numbers. Heck, the creator of NFTs has condemned them as scams, basically ending up like Frankenstein. While I'm not active much here, just wanted to say, thank you for assuring FA won't be selling out to these nerdy weirdos.
I see a lot of non-furry artists I like and respect resorting to making NFTs even when they clearly have no interest because 'they sell', so it's super valuable the big name in furry art is putting their foot down and keeping both artists and the environment a little safer.
Oh well, I can always throw a rock on twitter and hit twelve of them.
Hopefully this sort of update will scare them off of FA, but I do wonder if there's any way to word a part of the ToS to make NFT art theft a bannable offense, if nothing else than to let the mention of it be a deterrent.
