I feel an urge to try Windows 7 again.

Why do I do this to myself?
I've got my computer more or less functional on Ubuntu Linux. I can surf the web. I have a text editor that works, but is missing a couple features I really miss from Q10. I should at least be satisfied, if not happy.
I tried Windows 7 back in May and found it wouldn't run Q10 and, according to my journal, had a driver issue. I can't find anything to indicate the situation might have improved. Still, I'm downloading a torrent of Microsoft's ISO, I'll have it in 4 hours. Just went to Microsoft's site and found my product key, turns out you can only get new keys or look up old keys until tomorrow. The fact that I squeaked in under that deadline by chance makes me feel a bit better about things, feels like an omen.
My backup will be done in an hour. After that I guess I'll decide weather or not to fiddle with my OS again.
PS: Looks like Q10 had a new version in June, so maybe that will have fixed the Windows 7 issue?
Going to close Firefox to clear up some RAM until the backup is done. See you all in an hour ;)
PPS: Backup is done.
Another problem I have is that I just don't like Microsoft as a company. It makes me feel odd wanting to give another of their products a try.
Can't wait for the big check. If it comes I'm going to get a makbook of some sort and probably dualboot XP if I can't find a writer I like.

FA+

but not sure about the rest of it
That could be the reason it doesn't like the Q10.
anyhow i was reading reviews of 7 and a lot of people say they (M$) took the only good bits of vista and the core idea of XP and made new system dumping the vista core entirely as it was in general quite rushed and its approval rating was abysmal
i dont know if id use the shake the icon stuff from the apple way of things id likely operate in old style
my mate is looking into replacing her tower with a unit from dell and we add a better video card and more memory since nearly all are being offered with free upgrade to 7 from vista (her computer was mine id upgraded 4.5 yrs ago with the 5 yr to obsolete components idea and it certainly is at that point still running an agp video card and ddr ram with ide cables to the drives and mainboard BUT had the ability for sata cables when they first came out
The reason I'm looking at a Mac is that I like OS X and there are a couple writing applications I'd like to try on it. If they work I won't spend the extra money for XP, but if they don't do what I want them to it's a pretty simple thing to dual boot the system.
I wish I had the space for a tower setup. I miss having a couple monitors, a big comfy chair, and all that desk space to mess up. That sounds like a decent rig to me. I ... may be slightly behind the times :p
Pretty much turned me off of the Early Adopter mindset ;)
mebby I'll see if I can figure out the VM thing first.
If your base system runs Windows (or even Linux) you can download the VMWare player for free: http://downloads.vmware.com/d/ (though it is a bit tricky to configure under Linux). It looks like they have a version for the Mac, but my experience there is very limited.
The VMWare site also has various 'appliances' you can download for free (I recently tested out 'Damn Small Linux' on VMWare; I'm looking for an alternative OS for some of the older hardware I have sitting around).
I'm currently running Ubuntu, and it works, more or less. I'd like to figure out how to ... compile? my own version so I can get the file manager I like and the applications I like and not have to fiddle with installing and uninstalling packages manually. I think that's what has caused instability for me in the past. I can't figure out how to print anything. It doesn't support my Tablet PC functions, nor the built-in multi-card reader, neither of which are essential, but they would be nice. I also need to learn how to install things from tar files. Really it's just a lot of learning I'm being lazy about, I suppose Thus the ache to see if Windows 7 has fixed the few things I found wrong with it before :p
