Why I put past art I've commissioned in Scraps
3 years ago
So the more I thought about this, the more I realised that people could make an interpretation that I'm disrespecting artists by putting the work I commissioned from them in my scraps, whether it's the artists themselves or just viewers.
For the avoidance of any doubt, here's the reasoning:
I'm not a watcher. I do furry artwork, that's my primary reason for being here (and I'll be the first to admit it's of questionable consistency and quality). I do a lot of personal stuff, a couple of commissions and I've commissioned probably coming up on a couple of dozen artists. I also post game development-related stuff and even the odd unlikely piece of music.
I noticed that something that could be driving away people that might be considering commissioning me, is potential confusion over what the result might look like, or what the hell the main focus of my profile is.
I want to make a very clear divide between art that I've created and everything else. The first step to this was when I tagged most things I created with square brackets [ ] and left everything else, but I don't think that's enough.
The worst case scenario is that someone spends money commissioning me based on a piece of work that was created by someone else that I commissioned, with the assumption that the end result would have any resemblance. Wasting a commissioner's time with understandably false expectations is not good. The same with potentially having to redraw lines or even worse having to redo shading multiple times to try to reach a standard of quality I'm simply incapable of. When my profile/userpage is a mixture of my own and commissioned work, I think the risk of this is a lot higher.
By having clearly labelled art I've commissioned from other artists in my gallery for just a few days before being moved to scraps, they have a chance at visibility while hopefully not giving a false impression or expectations. Hopefully you won't see this as disrespectful as it should help to clearly divide other artists' superior work from my own.
Somewhat reluctantly I'll also be moving game dev, music and any other creative work submissions to my scraps. The same will apply to any other types of creative stuff I pick up. This helps with making it clear what the purpose of my profile is, but unfortunately muddies the waters still with how I would have liked to keep scraps for work done by other artists I've commissioned only, but since there's no profile visibility to worry about, hopefully having the work in folders will help with that.
As usual I've made a big text wall to poorly explain a simple concept again, sorry for that.
