☠ FurAffinity will be shut down

Ok, the title is kind of clickbait, but it kind of isn't but it kind of is but it kind of isn't.
It's a prediction.
If you're a conservative/moderate that doesn't think this could happen, then first of all please realise I'm not talking about you with what's ahead in this journal.
There was a time when conservatism in reference to the US political system wasn't synonymous with hatred, unfortunately that time was a few decades ago and the republican party has been now been entirely co-opted by far right extremists and doesn't represent you anymore.
If you voted for Trump believing he would actually "make america great again" rather than being misled into believing he was a "less bad" option than Harris, there's a "-Watch" button up there that I'd be more than happy for you to click. You can also do us both a favor and block me too, we'll both probably live happier lives if you do it.
But again, if you're a conservative/moderate that doesn't think this could happen, consider all the people that voted for Trump only to say "I didn't vote for this":
- people who had their wife/girlfriend/friends deported or citizenship removed
- farmers who can no longer sell their produce because of tariffs
- people who lost their jobs because the business they worked for isn't viable anymore because of tariffs
- farmers whose government-funded projects were dropped because of DOGE
- government workers and veterans who lost their jobs because of DOGE and/or DEI
Where is FurAffinity hosted? To my knowledge, the USA
Where are the current owners of FurAffinity? The USA
Which country is currently regressing on liberty, dismantling democracy at record speed and implementing fascism? The USA
I mean Trump LITERALLY SAID "If you vote for me, you won't have to vote again", but if you thought Trump was actually going to "make america great again" I guess the in tthe rally where he allegedly said that, that was just a deepfake. Just like Elon doing "Roman salute", twice, was a deepfake and not actually a "Roman salute" or he did it because he was autistic. Never mind that when you put it side by side with an overt neo-nazi doing a "Roman salute" the movement is almost identical.
Why would this happen? Well take a look at some aspects of MAGAt "culture" and it should be clear rather that the question should be why _wouldn't_ it.
- Extreme puritanicalism (except behind closed doors) and the very often pornographic and/or deviant content on FA is in conflict with this
- Likely to support the use of generative AI and be resentful towards artists - many of whom benefit from this sites' existence if not rely on it entirely, and whose works challenge the above point
- "DEI" hate - incapacity to put themselves in the shoes of actually oppressed people or to see any justification for minorities of any kind to want to be visible: quite the opposite in as far as trying to erase the existence of minorities and this site is FULL of LGBT+ people
- Similarly, anything considered "DEI" is being removed from US government websites
- "Protecting children" - except for when it comes to the war on actually protecting children through sex ed or showing them that it's okay to be anything besides a straight white male
So what's the point of this, other than self-indulgent ranting? The point is that we have to be prepared for FA to be existentially threatened, and ready to do what we can to keep it alive.
I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, or next week, or even next year. But realise that the current administration is going to keep pushing until the pushback is enough to stop them, something which tragically has shown very little sign of happening with the current, weak ass opposition.
It's not a reality I want to face given how much would be lost and how much history there is on this site, so many bonds forged, so much joy between art creators and enjoyers alike, so much money raised and exchanged to those in need.
How do we keep it alive? I'm not in the USA so there's not much I can do, but if you are you should let your governors know that you're not okay with internet censorship and that if the existence of sites that host 18+ content are threatened then you want them to stand up for it to be allowed to exist. This isn't about only standing up for FA. If PornHub gets blocked, that's a likely performative first step because everyone knows about PornHub. If they can get away with banning that, they will know they can get away with taking down the sites with the most resources, and anything else will be easy in comparison.
Alternatively, if FA administration and hosting could be migrated to a country that isn't under some threat of fascism at least in the long term (and that's a big ask at the moment honestly), it's up to us as the users to make sure that the site staff and administrators are aware of the threat. That in itself is difficult, if the FA staff don't see things this way (which they probably don't or the steps required to mitigate it would likely already be underway) then it'd be an uphill battle to not come across preachy or as some kind of personal agenda. After all, no one is going to want to hear "The site you administrate is under threat of being taken down by neo-nazis. Oh also I guess you are too lol so you should, like, leave the country along with the site that has stayed alive for years. Trust me bro"
The approach has to be straightforward and make sense, otherwise the result is more likely to cause resistance against the intended outcome rather than inertia towards it.
