Discord "Support"
So I screwed up on Sunday evening (2/20/2022) and made the mistake of trying to help out a friend I had not heard from in awhile on discord. I talked with what I thought was that person for several minutes before being careless. I ended up losing said discord account with the tag StefenAuris#1701.
I know, I'm a tech person. I should know better. It's exceptionally humiliating to me. However I want to take this moment to help teach others. No matter who it is or what they send, always double check what you are doing! Phishing is easy, and all it takes is one moment of your guard being lowered and *poof* your online stuff can be gone in the blink of an eye.
Now this can be mitigated by services that have a good support team that has got your back! Unfortunately I can't say that's been my experience with discord. I immediately filed a ticket right after it happened and changed my password as a stopgap measure to try and slow the other person down. We're heading into Thursday now and I haven't heard anything beyond their automated message about receiving my ticket. By this time my friends have told me my compromised account has left all the old group chats and servers I was a part of. At this point I don't think there's anything for me to come back to even if Discord finally answers my ticket.
I find this unacceptable on their part to leave these kind of things hanging, especially when they talk about having their own big safety team. I'm not impressed. Discord, you are an international company now, people from all over the world use your service. You need to scale up your support to match that! I am seeing people getting scammed and losing accounts left and right but I don't see you doing anything about it except making a token "stay safe" blog post. Things happen, we are human. Tech companies can't keep getting away with lackluster support!
In the meantime I've had no choice but to start over with a new account StefenAuris#0132 and I've updated that contact information here on FA and elsewhere. This has been a very frustrating experience but I feel its important to warn others to not expect discord to help you if you end up having troubles with your account! Make sure you have backup means to communicate with your friends, and perhaps we should also consider looking for alternatives to use over discord.
