The world community grid uses distributed computing, sending parts of a bigger problem to volunteer's computers to be worked on all at the same time. I have personally contributed over 8,000 results since I first started in 2011, contributing to a better understanding of AIDS, Cancer, Malaria, Muscular Dystrophy, and many other scientific research projects like Human Proteome Folding, Sustainable Energy, and the effect of humans on the water table.
