Was I Bullied out of an Opinion on My Page?
A LONG time ago on this site I wrote a journal that more artists should do requests and that it should be a priority.
I just felt it was really nice to get free art and I felt it'd be good if more people did it.
Though free art is nice and I'm eternally grateful for the people who have given it to me. I no longer feel that requests should be a priority for artists and that all these people should be doing them.
Now the word "Bullied" is in the title of this journal for a valid reason. What is that reason? Well, back when I wrote the journal I got some SERIOUS backlash mainly from people that commissioned art and I really felt like shit about it.
The nicest ones lectured me and the meanest ones chastised my ass both of which were uncalled for especially the latter one.
I mean I'm just here giving my opinion and people attack me like I left a bigoted, worthless, self entitled comment on their content rather than write it on my own page.
This treatment I consider bullying. I mean no matter how controversial or even evil an opinion is people have the discretion to write what they want onto their own page. People attacked me as if I didn't have such discretion and treated me like I was a bastard.
It sucked, I literally cried over it and I long since deleted the journal. It was just that painful.
But as for the question in the title I ask it because there are 2 inferences I have floating around on why I don't think the same way about prioritizing free art.
One inference, is that I was bullied into changing my opinion in a sense. I mean I was treated so harshly for having it that MAYBE that's why I feel differently now. I mean when you have an opinion people really don't like you for and attack you about it on your own page, you may free intense pressure to change said opinion.
Okay, now for the other inference. I feel that requests shouldn't be a priority is because they usually don't feel right to do them for artists.
I mean they may not want to draw what people want to draw for them, they may not like the way they're treated for requests, and the biggest reason is they may want to profit of their art. Art is work after all, and it helps to get paid for work especially if you can do it well for a lot.
So it's just better for some artists to do art for money, to get compensated for work.
The things is I'm trying to think what is the actual reason (or the bigger one) I changed my opinion. Was it because I was treated so harshly or because I genuinely felt that it wasn't that functional?
I think it's a bit of both for the reasons I've changed my view but I'll still unsure of what the bigger reason was.
In a way it may not matter because either way I changed my opinion and I see no reason to go back to it.
I'm just curious however.
I mean you shouldn't be bullied out of an opinion, you should change it out of your own volition. Meaning you're actually thinking for yourself without pressure because that would be illegitimate to change your view just because people bullied you into it.
That's not really thinking, that's pressuring, which is wrong.
As for what they said, the meanest ones basically said I was a self-entitled tool one way or the other. The nicer ones lectured me that basically asking me do I really feel it's right to just want things for free.
Let me clear, I wasn't demanding or forcing anyone to do work for me for free or otherwise. I just thought it'd be nice and that it was important.
People basically thought I was self entitled, but since I didn't demand it I wasn't.
To be self entitled, you have to demand the stuff. Not just wish for it, not just desire for it, DEMAND it.
If you want the stuff but are respectful of people's right to turn you down, then you're self entitled.
I guess what I'm really trying to say is don't bully people especially for having an opinion on their page which is their domain to do so. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion even if it's rude, entitled and even downright mean.
Perhaps it is a bit silly to think stuff being free should be a priority since that isn't primarily how economics works and plus it's better to get money for your stuff. But come on, there's no need to chew people out for this stuff.
