How I Feel About Keeping/Buying/Mounting Other's Heads
3 years ago
If you like those kind of modular things, that's totally cool. I admit they're pretty fun and interesting, and even sometimes cute. We have our preferences when it comes to modular, and who am I to make anyone feel bad or any less of a person about their interests?
But for my scalesona and my characters, I am a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a character owning another's head, and I find it a little sad. It's because the head has the character's face, and their face is pretty much their identity, also the part I interact with when socializing with them. To like own their identity seems a bit sad to me.
Even though I often take the character's head, and hold it and hug it, I always want the character to know their head is ultimately theirs. It can look like I am possessing their head, but I let them know it's all temporary. And that's why I love to return the head back to the character and stick it back on their headless body to make a polite closing, and indicate that their head is always theirs. The hugging is to make the character feel like the head they have looks so awesome, and their mind and thoughts inside are so beautiful, like it's a good thing that the character has whatever type of head they were born with. (Man, that's one heck of an insult: the head you were born with is bad, omg.)
However if the character wants their head to be sold or mounted as a trophy, it's their choice. So go for it.
I think what inspired me to write this topic was the most recent modular piece I've favorited, saying that wolf's head is for display only.

I was kind of relieved that his head wasn't for sale, even though the rest of the body was, which doesn't make sense for me to be so relieved. But the head being the part on sale would strike my heart most.
It's so strange how I feel so passionately about this topic, even though this is all fantasy. But, I am deeply in touch with my scalesona and OCs and I think about them every day.

I've seen some peoples' characters where their 'essence' or 'identity' (of sorts) is in their body, and their head's just an accessory. So giving away or selling their head might not be any different than giving away a hat. Some people might also enjoy trading parts with their friends. Et cetera.
Everyone has different preferences, and because this is fantasy, people have the freedom to explore things they might or might not like without much in real-world repercussions. Just as long as we don't judge each other for interests that are ultimately harmless. :)
Oh, when you put it that way that the head can be seen a just an accessory like a hat, that makes more sense. Then in that sense, it doesn't seem so sad. It's rather fascinating how different modular furs approach the same subject, and to find out some perspectives I had no idea about.
That's true, and I like how you explained it. It's nice to have that freedom to try anything in fantasy without the consequences. Yes, I really am thankful of this judgement-free environment to express ourselves that we've created in the modular furs group, and in the furry fandom.
Thank you for commenting, Kairus. I wasn't sure how others would respond to this journal. Maybe a lot of modular furs don't have the same opinion as me, but I'm glad you explained the other point of view. I hope the way I worded this journal didn't hurt others, like saying this part of modular I can feel sad about.
