Charles "Chuck" Melville RIP
Charles Melville succumbed to cancer today. He played a big part in the early days of furry publishing, He worked for Mu Press, and with EdVick created the furry shared world The Furkindred. He was also edited numerous furry works such as Zu, and the Fangs of Ka'ath.
Fuq cancer.
He was a friend of mine
Never had no money
to pay for his fine
but he was a friend of mine.
I don't know where he came from
I don't know where he came from
One day he was there
the next he was gone
he was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
When I hear his name
I just can't keep from cryin'
He was a friend of mine.
-Old cowboy song.
Vaya con Dios, Chuck. Vaya con Dios.
As you say, he was one of the people who really got things moving, and worked hard to build a more professional publishing world for the furry fandom. I have almost everything that was published by Mu (Miscellanea Unlimited) Press over the years, and one of my regrets to this day is that I never tried to get involved with Furkindred during the far too brief time it was still running.
We wouldn't be where we are today if not for him.
Chuck was one of the really good ones. He will be sorely missed - he was still writing and drawing a colour(!) webcomic about Felicia since 2011, last updated this past June. I'm still going through it, but it's pure Chuck, amazing and touching and complex and nothing as it seems.
I couldn't find a site he was still visiting. I wish I could have sent him at least some kind words and a thank you for all he's done.
I didn't know him well. Mostly I knew him through his works like those you mentioned.
He'd helped furry more than many knew.
He is missed.
A great sadness for the fandom.
