Dark Natasha got dogpiled by Twitter race segregationists because he draws critters with Native American accessories.
Cries of "Cultural Appropriation" and staying in one's lane and somesuch.
Awwww, that's a shame. Her characters are sooo pretty. I've met her at cons. She's one of the sweetest, nicest people ever. It's too bad somebody is picking on her.
It's an extension of tribalist thought, basically. You keep to your business that you're expected to be involved in. As in, if you're of European descent, you should only be making art that involves subjects from your own cultural ancestry.
"Staying in your lane" is functionally extending a courtesy to marginalized groups by not speaking over them. Some examples of NOT staying in one's lane could be:
1. promoting stereotypes of a group when you do not belong to that group, particularly if people who are part of that group have previously voiced their unhappiness about being represented in that way. This does NOT mean that a creator can't develop characters and stories that are different from their personal background but...staying in one's lane means letting people whose voices ARE relevant be prominent, doing the research from primary sources, etc.
2. listening to a discussion about discrimination against X group and because you have a friend or a sister-in-law or some other tangential connection but are not X personally, speak up about how people of X group feel/think. Staying in your lane refers to, again, not taking up space with your input if you are not of that marginalized group.
Staying in your lane isn't only a marginalized race/ethnicity thing, but for example can also be applied to things like health (don't make assumptions about people with disabilities, let people with disabilities speak about their own experiences), gender (if you're not a woman, don't talk over women about what women experience), and other subjects in which there's historically/currently significant inequity between groups of people.
"I highly doubt"
That's showing you haven't actually taken the time to read Native replies to the offending artwork.
Or know about how the genocide against Native Americans still continues to this day.
Here's a good thread to start with. https://twitter.com/Tonya_Song/stat.....WkjDhKl9yUeIvA
I'm sorry to hear that you were threatened. The sad thing that that many years ago, I was impressed with the intelligent intrigue in your storytelling! Nobody deserves such threats, but you DEFINITELY don't deserve such treatment.
That was pretty much it. I created furry fandom and the fandom is turning all the kids gay. I think he may have been the one behind a series of harassing calls some months ago. Its all about I'm gay and I made everyone else gay.
Wow, that's a pretty solid leap there on this person's part. Not that the people who do this sort of thing are exactly logical. I was hoping for something a bit more amusingly non-sensical (it's the sociopolitical ramification, that's what did it!) than just outright stupid on their part. The quality of the trolls and whack-jobs has gone down apparently!
That's... pretty weird, if you ask me, Mr. Gallacci. Albedo only had a single known gay character (Illya) and she isn't even the main character or even a member of the recurrent character, and even with that, Illya only mentions her sexuality in a single issue. Maybe they had confused you with the people behind Katmandu, which features many gay characters and it also have Native American-like characters.
It goes without saying. Ignore the fool. They don't know you or your work. They are mad about something else or they want to feel like they accomplished something. They want someone to be afraid of them. It is beneath you and not worth your time.
For the record, (whatever the record may be) your comic Albedo introduced me to the fandom in the mid 80's. That comic showed me how smart furry sci-fi could be. A little while later, Omaha the Cat Dancer showed me how sexy furries could be.
Now THAT comic made all the kids gay. (KIDDINGKIDDINGKIDDING)
That is a next level. If there is any slight suspicion that the threat is real, take some precautions. I've never had a serious death threat. (The time I got shot was a negligent discharge by some japanese tourists. Luckily for me, by the time it had ricocheted off the floor and penetrated the many layers of soundproofing between the range and the waiting area, it only had enough force left to make a mark. ) I did spend a year or so taking precautions because I had somehow attracted a stalker. Once I heard he had been involuntarily committed to a mental institution, I relaxed. Hopefully it's just some moron bloviating at you.
Yes, I remember reading Albedo, a story about war and life on an alien world..Boom, I was gay. Cute girls in my reading class had nothing to with it. All your fault.
Seriously, though-sorry you've had to deal with that. I had some yahoo threaten me because I disagreed with their review of an episode of The Loud House. Stupid dope sent me a picture of a map to my house...only while it didn't show exactly where I lived it showed the starting address where he lived. How some of these mouthbreathers manage to survive into adulthood I'll never know.
"Don't...let...the...troll-kin get you down!
Don't get hassled, to a fraa-a-azzle!
('cause they're all full of BEANS)!
And, anyway don't you know-uowo-uwo-uwu!....."
I had a few issues in College and High School. I put up pictures of targets riddled with .45 SWC slubs--and yes, I had fired them--where they were visible to passers by. Friendly people were interested, the unfriendly took the hint.
Been there, got the T shirt. It happens every few years to me. I just smirk and move on. I refuse to be political in my art and people make assumptions as a result and get upset when I don't give them attention.
It is art. I do it for me and my customers, not self righteous zealots. They are free to do their own art.
Ah, the old death threat. We were still getting them at Archie Comics when I did my last cover for them in 2013. Our crime was having Archie briefly dating Valerie Brown, whom you may already know, is black.
Anyway... people are nuts and congrats on inventing furry, I guess. :)
Re: Archie. I could see why some folks might have taken exception (ie their sheets are showing).
To be honest I think Valerie is way better match for Archie than either Betty or Veronica since both his "traditional girl friends" have levels of toxic personality that might make for old fashioned situational comedy chuckles but in real life would be hell
Val has the same sort of musical interests and always came off as grounded, independent, and not one to put up with idiots. None of Veronica's "flirt with all the boys" or Betty's stalker nonsense
a death threat, huh. do we have to call you "Sir" now?
in more serious tones... do you have their datas? at least in germany a death threat is a major crime, even across the internet. maybe they need to be dragged before court for a bit.
Sorry you had to put up with that awful nonsense. Damn annoying, that's for sure, like a pre-caller ID phone call at 3AM where the caller either makes mouth breather sucking air noises, or giggles ripe obscenities in a cutie-pie helium voice. I don't think anything'll happen, but just the same, please watch your back for the time being. You're a good guy, Steve, and nobody wants to see anything bad happen to you.
If it's in writing you can actually report this to the authorities, as death threats are illegal.
Also: it rather tells you something about the mindset of people, how little regard they hold for others and how self-entilted they must feel. Very much like ill-raised children.
I just re-watched on YT the doco on furries by Down the Rabbit Hole / Fredrik Knudsen. It features you early on but by no means implies you created furry. Being somewhat of an old timer I already knew this. And so would anyone who had half a brain.
Maybe the threats came from a fundamentalist burned fur who finally escaped from the asylum? But as for the threats; f*ck 'em. You keep doing your thing.
First DarkNatasha, now Steve Gallacci.
Seems some folks didn't get spanked enough as kids, or something.

btw, I'm not a native speaker. what does the "staying in one's lane" thing mean?

my, life has become complicated since we climbed down those trees way back when...

Just lovely.
Vix
No worries, though. They're going to be meeting a shadow fish in the next few months.
Gonna be fun to watch the news for a change!
Now THAT comic made all the kids gay. (KIDDINGKIDDINGKIDDING)
Not sure if this calls for a "that sucks, dude" or a "shit yeah, congrats!" Probably both.
=^.,.^=
You magnificent bastard.

Some people are just slow I guess.
...Like me!
...but no death-threats here; quite the opposite, just well wishes to the old master.
