Thoughts from a Brit, Regarding the Death of the Queen
3 years ago
Disclaimer - Mini-rant, and I am not the sort of person who lines up on Horseguards' Parade decked out in Union Jacks and waving little flags as the monarchy ride past; I didn't even watch either of the huge televised royal weddings.
A down mood's not been improved by finding out how many people in my generation are monarchy-hating wankers, celebrating the Queen's death. It's like... what the fuck, you tasteless arseholes?
It's one thing celebrating Margaret Thatcher's death - a racist homophobic woman who caused direct and lasting harm to the LGBTQ community and LGBTQ youths - but the Queen transitioned the UK OUT of an Empire, celebrated the independence of former colonies (even the famously contentious issue of the Troubles in Ireland), and did lots of good work.
And they hate her because 'monarchies are bad' and that the Royal Family is all 'empires' and 'colonialism' and 'built on the blood of yada yada'. Fun fact: you can use the EXACT same argument about the United States and its presidents. Basically ALL countries are founded on abuse and have a history involving persecution and often slavery.
But insensitively hating a family or institution and celebrating a major death in the family because, a hundred years ago, their ancestors and/or relatives were involved in dick-headed stuff that the rest of the world was involved in? Despite the fact that that family and institution have fought to UNFUCK all the problems of the past, and basically succeeded (no more empire, independence to colonies, etc.)? Fuck those haters.
It honestly makes me ashamed that there are so many people of my generation who are such knee-jerk assholes celebrating the death of a widely-beloved figurehead who is responsible for so much good and atonement when it comes to the crimes of the British Empire.
