Mastodon and the Fediverse
Statements from the stateless....
Ok, since there's a mass exodus from Twitter, I figured I'd post some info about the Fediverse of which Mastodon is part of for those who haven't already found a replacement for it.
The Fediverse is a collection of server side apps sharing posts via a single protocol (ActivityPub). These don't have to be micro-blogging like Twitter, though there are 4 of those (more in a bit), they include a YouTube-like service, and Instagram-like and more. The only exceptions to sharing is Diaspora which uses it's own protocol that's only shared with Friendica, and OwnCast, which can only share announcements for obvious reasons.
So, what's out there?
Microblogging:
Mastodon, most well known, most Twitter-like
Misskey, Japanese product, mostly anime and Japanese language servers, more features than Mastodon, really nice interface
Pleroma, more features than Mastodon, terrible interface, mostly shit posters and trolls
Diaspora, similar to Mastodon but better looking, prolly more like Tumblr, doesn't share with most of the Fediverse.
Macroblogging
Friendica, reminiscent of LiveJournal, interface can be confusing, BB Code compliant, unlimited length posts
Write Freely, like WordPress I think?
Music/Audio
FunkWhale, similar to SoundCloud
Video
PeerTube, similar to YouTube
Pictures/Images
PixelFed, similar to Instagram
There's actually more out there, but these should cover most typical uses.
If you're looking for a furry Mastodon server, there's a few out there, but if you're having trouble finding one that's open, I can issue invites to Meow.social
