My thoughts on the second Super Mario Movie trailer

Tell writers what you think, even if you hate it. My first thought is this trailer builds Mario up, not as 'the hero they needed,' but as 'the hero they got.' This is going to be a story about Mario growing into the legend he will become. You can see as much with Mario tip-toeing around the training course and getting his kidneys Donkey-Konga'd. Let's also address the elephant in the room: Chris Pratt is not going to sound like the Mario we know. He sounds like he'll fit the character archetype Mario is filing for this movie, but he's not going to be able to do the 'Marioisms' we're expecting very well, whether we were looking for Charles Martinet's ultra-Italian interpretation or Captain Lou's Italian-American Brooklynite. Let's get past that.
Let me just briefly say, King Kranky Kong got a big chuckle out of me, though I'm disappointed we didn't get to HEAR Seth Rogan's DK.
I'm also loving how they're representing Luigi's understated courage. He's clearly out-of-his-gourd with terror being confronted by Bowser, but he's holding on and not ratting out his brother.
Peach's reveal is great. Having grown up with 'Princess Toadstool' on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, I've been disappointed with the more girly, less pro-active Peach we've had since Mario 64. This Peach is clearly a strong leader and more (again) pro-active than the game version, which is nice, but she feels like her pendulum may have swung just a hair too far in the other direction. On an aesthetic note, I think the Illumination style has hit her a little harder than it hit Mario and it's softened her face a bit much.
Seeing Peach's castle, I'm wondering how many Mario 64 paintings we'll be able to spot during the movie.
Cute as the 'Look at us, we're adorable!' line is, seeing the Toads not having the confidence to stand up for themselves is a little disheartening, especially since we've seen them armed for battle before.
Seeing the Tanooki Suit was cool, but I LOVED the way they showed Peach taking on the power of the Fire Flower (possibly even including a pallet switch with her dress). Watching our primaries leading an army of Kongs in Karts down Rainbow Road was ALMOST epic, and it shows that they're trying to pull in aspects from as many corners of Mario lore as possible.
The most significant thing in the trailer, I think, is not an image, but a line. 'There's a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies. They're all counting on us.' This line shows that this movie has adopted the Super Mario Galaxy cosmology for its world. This opens up a lot of possibilities, including the possibility of Rosalina being in the film (likely only as a cameo or post-credit reveal). This could even portend the Ultimate cinematic possibility: a Smash Multiverse.
