Yet another journal about how the new policy is stupid
2 years ago
Hey Folks,
I mostly wanted to keep this area as a gallery of my work where I don't speak much because for the longest time my mental state led me to saying things I didn't mean. It was a relatively low barrier place with some exceptions but atleast they were consistent. I have already made effort to avoid posting sonic characters because I have heard the mods have a bias against them, but the new policy feels like a carte blanche to ban myself and artists who draw like me.
Given the new policy update obviously myself and every other artist who like to draw shortstacks, pokemon, digimon, simple cartoony characters, heavily stylized characters, etc, very worried about our future here. I don't exclusively draw characters that may hypothetically violate this policy but I have many friends who have pikachu sonas who are at risk of being purged.
I will be one of many to say this: I have never drawn characters with the intent of depicting children in a nsfw context. If it were possible I would happily remove any online visual, audio, or otherwise depiction of anyone for any reason who is under the age of 18 in a second, and I feel as though until the internet has stronger barriers between underaged individuals and adults that predation will continue to be an issue.
Of course with all that above the only people willing to condemn me for acknowledging that this wont work as intended are coming from a position of bad faith, and that is from a position of charity to the staff. In a more cynical sense this is likely an overcorrection with the hope of purging anyone who falls into a "gray zone" because its easier to do mass purges than take time to ensure whether each creator actually is malicious or not.
So, from now moving forwards I expect unjustified bans en mass as having a policy this ambiguous means its up to moderator opinion which has been a scourge of unjustifiable decisions made, contradicted, and plenty of reasons to suck up to admins so they are less likely to smite you because some artist with a larger follower count launched a hate campaign against you (I speak from personal experience, the hate campaign not the sucking up). Once the initial fanfare dies down I'm willing to bet the policy will remain but wont be as "enforced" as much so if I get banned I'll probably just wait a year and remake.
TL:DR: The policy is way too ambiguous and will ban innocent people. If I'm among them so be it. It will be a shame to have my original artwork purged but I don't have the time or energy to sift through everything. I will still be active on twitter (unfortunately) and IB (which has more features than FA AND allows you to have a cutesy art style) and posting in whatever discord servers I'm in and people reply to when I post.
P.S. In more positive news I have a pretty large backlog of art to upload. Fingers crossed none of it trips the alarms.

One thing the staff has demanded people do if they have questions is submit a ticket with pictures to explain what will and won't be banned. I've done so and I'm waiting for a response to see if there are any technicalities about my characters. None of my OCs are young, but most are short. There are a few artists that have gotten responses back and those have been useful for understanding how the rule will be enforced instead of just trying to understand how it's worded. It might be good to do that with your own stuff or others to know if they'll be booted or to just have a clear statement that a picture is GUARANTEED to be safe.

A lot of people that have done that have found that Chibis and shortstacks will get screwed over because mods are dicks.

It's just absurd that height is starting to become the line now..and everyone's perception of reality and what's presented to them varies. One shouldn't have their content removed because of some strange bias that the people at the top of the website have. Personally I think it's a combination of people seeing child abuse where it just isn't going on, pokemon evolutionary stages do not determine age, and being short or drawn more cute doesn't equate to children either. It's fucking murky, dangerous water to tread because if you give an inch, a mile will be taken. It's just really poorly thought out and I feel at the heart of it is just placating people who have these absurd insecurities about short characters/sonas. I suppose we should create layers of taboo and whatnot over IRL people with dwarfism or just shorter frames in general too? These people exist, everyone is so different and people's tastes/morals? whatever it is, shouldn't be affecting policy so easily. The many double standards of fantasy creations and what crosses whatever line is ridiculous as it is. It's artwork at the end of the day and just because two people don't have the same feelings toward a particular piece doesn't mean it's crossing an arbitrary line somewhere. Apologies for the tangent, I'm just unable to perform the mental gymnastics required for this stuff.
