I haven't ever used that site too terribly much. Tbh, I don't do a lot of the social medias. I like a degree of separation from humanity, I guess.

I like it and I'm relatively active there. It does take a bit to get going and isn't as straightforward as, say, Twitter, but it's been a nicer experience overall. Would say especially initially to be pretty liberal in who you follow; it's really easy to get bored and give up on it if you have a mostly empty home timeline.

Yas! I need to get a grasp on what makes it special, for instance on why the instance where you create an account matters. Seems like the only thing I know about Mastodon is that instances see each other somehow xD

I left Twitter because at one point I was just reading attack after attack after attack from people I didn't even follow, and it was all an incoherent mix of insults, accusations, cute art, politics, Elon, war, memes, sexy art, tech news, slice of life, cats... it made no sense.

Now I know that the closest to the Discover section of Twitter is the Federated Timeline, and there's the #introduction tag I still have to toot about. We'll see how it goes, but seeing some familiar faces over there helps a lot. Thank you ♥

I'd say that it matters what instance you're on mostly insofar as the rules and moderation for that instance is something you're good with, and if it's also an instance catering to your niche you may be able to find people to follow via the local timeline more easily. (I find the Local timeline, which shows posts from only your instance, less overwhelming than the federated timeline.) But you're not stuck there either, if you do want to move to another instance, it's possible to move to a new one and bring your followers with you, though it's a bit of a pain to do.

Using tags can help too as it's generally easy to search by tags, and some people watch for posts made to specific tags as well. Keep in mind there really isn't an algorithm on Mastodon; you're seeing a firehose of all of the posts your instance sees on the Federated timeline.
