I have a odd request and a question to anyone here who owns or work on bmws, im looking to replace the fule-tank but not keen on using a original tank on the one i have as they are so prone to rust and the price of em are out of this world right now, as yes if your wondering i have a e38 728i im restoring and is partially restomodding.
So im considering do a complete replacement of it with one plastic form another model, and the 2 models e39 and e65 are those i found that might be good options within the volume and compromise i consider acceptable, but to be absolutely sure either will be compatible i need exact measurement of it and likes of; the axle/exhaust tunnel, the taper to suspension joints, height, bolt region ect, just to be sure so everything fits.
Update
so looked closely on the tank and found its not the tank gladly, but the D-line from bottom to the top was really leaking badly, and i got that orderd, now i will still take down the tank to do a complete restoration to prevent it from potentially leak in the future

Best way would be to get one from a scrapyard (should get the sender units as part of it) and offer it up once you've dropped the steel tank.
Failing that, depending how badly rusted it is, it is possible to repair them and apply a sealent internally , there's a number of products about dependin in which part of the world you are.
Dropped some links for parts and such, Part number from BMW is 16111183145

i have talked about weld or even use tank sealer all say it never is worth the time or effort to do it as they spring a leak almost eminently so, as on the tank i have only peaked under the car for now but seems to come out from the front edge of the tank.
we will see and make decisions on how it looks but it was a thing i was warned by many about these models as those tanks are notoriously for leaking
As for a plastic option, im just not seeing any, but im possibly blind there too.
For replacement, this video might help too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NID63hu2G0U
