Whereas typically if you can trust somebody, then they don't need to go out of their way to tell you that you can trust them.

Indeed. Although the biggest shame is that there exists people that necessitate the need to build trust in the first place.

Perhaps, although the people who are really good at manipulating, particularly dangerous people those ones, can make you trust them without asking for it, just with their natural charisma.

Then there's the people who are less than subtle and lead a business proposition with "You can trust me" or "This isn't a Ponzi scheme". You can see them coming from a mile away.

If somebody approached me with that lead, my response would be, "Who the hell is Ponzi?"
