Jimmy Newman Medal Nominee for this round:
Round 17: Isaiah O’Neal (Wellington Vipers)
For some players, It can take all season for a team to take notice of them or to even give them a proper shot in the team. For Isaiah O’Neal, It was a slow grind of being brought into the squad as an interchange player, being dropped the next week, Rinse and Repeat. But the injury to a major player for the Vipers in Carmelita Toney gave Isaiah his big break.
Against the Gold Coast Dragons, Isaiah was vital for the Vipers as not only was he able to keep top forwards like Brendan Murphy from having a major impact on the game but he was able to be the main defence for the Vipers thanks to his unorthodox playing style. This would lead to O’Neal having 23 disposals, 14 marks and 3 tackles in the win and setting up his place in Wellington’s side going forward and after a hard year, Things seem to be finally coming up roses for Isaiah O’Neal and that is why he is our Jimmy Newman Medal nominee for Round 17!
