They get heckled by payment processors because technically transmitting any content deemed "obscene" across state lines (which one does over the internet) is actually a crime ( 18 U.S.C. § 1462 ). It's not often an enforced crime, but the fact that it is illegal on the books puts the pressure on payment processors like Visa and banks, because if they knowingly assist one of these sales they can be held legally liable at *any* point in the future if it can be proved.

What is normal to some can be offensive to others. Anything riskier or less traditionally charged than a James Bond movie can be pinged by these laws as written depending on the judge, and may well be in the future should it ever become a more central political focus. As mentioned in my post, it's rarely if ever enforced presently.

To me though this is one of the motivating forces behind financial institutions marching to this particular drum beat. I can't imagine everyone at MasterCard or Visa care this strongly about the alleged moral failing of sexual content being transmitted for profit over the internet, but it makes perfect sense that they would see a potential financial liability coming from aiding and abetting that kind of content, and work to minimize it.

All these companies shooting themselves in the foot. Its sad.
