How my first game jam went
One evening I invited my team, with whom I had already done a game jam (but we didn’t have time) to participate in Pixel Game Jam - 2024.
My game https://good-person-vmirrn.itch.io/.....ld-of-the-gods
There are three of us - me as an artist, a guy for 3D backgrounds and a novice programmer.
It was a chaotic trip. At some point I made a scandal that we had zero work planning, which made the guys go into shock.
But the work process has begun.
We constantly had problems with our inability to conduct teamwork. For example, my technical questions were often ignored.
But I also did stupid things, so we're even, I guess.
We had a plan and we just followed it.
There was a funny moment with the programmer: to any of my questions “can we do...” the answer was “no we can’t”
The programmer is a great fellow; he was able to get the most out of himself, taking into account his low level.
The programmer and I didn’t sleep the whole night on the last day of the jam so that we could complete everything. The poor man went to school in this condition.
I was drawing in Aseprite without knowing very important hotkeys and it really slowed down my work so I was very tired at the end.
But now we made a game.
Despite the fact that we cut out some of the ideas because the programmer was already barely breathing from the workload, we did everything we wanted. In the end it was really cool to feel like I had my own game. This is not just a game, but with my character!
And so we began to wait for the results of the game jam and...
It turns out that there was some kind of document that needed to be drawn up for participation. I found out about it by chance by looking at my email.
There is not a word about him on the main page of the game jam, the information was only in the game jam discord. I didn’t really look at what was on discord, but even my programmer who was on the channel missed it.
As a result, we are disqualified because of this.
The moderators told everyone with this problem to shut their mouths and not interfere with their complaints to review the games for voting. With the exception of those who did not register for technical reasons.
Even those who knew about this document had problems with the document and noted that it was a controversial decision for the game jam.
It’s so annoying that everything positive is simply erased.
My huge motivator was the prize that promised promotion of the game at the expense of the company.
For several years I have been looking for projects that are able to reach at least a demo version and that will not tell me that “I am not good enough” to work for free. And it's damn hard.
So I reassure myself that I have finally found my team.
I quit drawing for almost half a year because I hate it.
I became a HOI mod artist, but that only made things worse.
To some extent, creating a game began to bring me back to art.
I have very controversial feelings about all this.

Well, we didn't get anything...
We didn't have much fun, the tight deadlines weren't very pleasant <:)
Probably all I can say is that everyone starts somewhere
(But it’s extremely disappointing to be disqualified for such a stupid reason)
Somewhere though...I have no idea how it works, but maybe we can monetize the game after the edits, since we were offered it
I can’t imagine the reason, apparently it was still those adventures hahaha
I was just thinking about asking if you had anything left over from your game jam, but apparently not
I came to the capital to a bunch of officials so that they could select the winner from among the candidates. True, the head of the country's army did not like me, who decided that he would choose the winner himself according to his own criteria after talking with us... Normal judges tried to stop him and explain the evaluation criteria, but it was useless.
My drawings for the competition were absolutely disgusting, and I felt awkward next to really professional arts.
But we all sucked equally, because the first place went to a poster stolen from the Internet, which was not even drawn by the winner himself (we were both driving in an ordered car to the capital and I just heard everything).
Even just looking at the art , everything screamed that it couldn't win first place. But this art won first place.
Because the main thing is a smile and female seduction for a high-ranking official and not the art itself :) I hope the winner did not receive a prize in the form of rape or something like that.
I mean, I used to be cool just because of the submission form of my job, but now it's the other way around. In none of the options does the content itself matter.
Sadly some competitions go that way, the winner is decided before it ever starts and the whole thing is just a show.
