Echolilies and gender identity
You may have noticed that despite myself being trans and despite there being characters I have adapted who are trans, no echolily so far has had a "transgender" label.
This is because echolilies may choose and/or change their gender at any point if they wish with no social stigma or issues. Therefore, the "transgender" label is somewhat irrelevant to echolilies. They can be absolutely any gender at any given moment so there is no experience of a lengthy and potentially uncomfortable transition process.
However, if an echolily finds it particularly significant that it changed from one gender identity to another, it may adopt the label "transgender" or a variant of it.
As a trans person myself who has questioned its identity a lot, this lore is designed to be a fantasy where instead of fighting and struggling for an identity, in the echolily world, gender identity is easy to change and always respected by others.
I hope this makes sense to those who are reading this! Life has been very difficult for me as a trans person, so I made the echolily species to show what I wish gender and gender transitioning was like.
To reiterate, it's not "there are no transgender echolilies," it's just that gender works differently for them than it does for humans.
