10 Years

It's crazy to think that it's been 10 whole years. But I still remember it like it was yesterday.
A special Nintendo Direct was announced...but I lost all faith in Nintendo at this point. I went to work and figured I'd catch up with it later if there was anything significant.
Boy, was I wrong.
I get the first contact - a Yu-Gi-Oh friend of mine, Adam, called me.
"Mewtwo's in Smash!" "WHAT?" I shouted. "They're adding him back in as DLC!"

Years of feeling directly scorned as a fanbase, all gone in an instant. All in-fighting within the Mewtwo fandom, and ongoing issues with other gaming groups and fans, like it never happened. I picked up a WiiU as a prize from Dave & Buster's, and bought about $500 worth of games and pre-orders the next morning from GameStop. A bottle of Dom Perignon bought that next day, saved until April 15th - Mewtwo's DLC release date. The only time I've ever had it, and likely only time I ever will.
I don't have anything big planned, like an art drop or fangame commission for this milestone, as I had in years past. But that doesn't mean I'm not looking back upon the 27 years of Mewtwo fandom fondly, and even knowing how things would go, with some friendships strained, some severed entirely, and new ones formed and others strengthened...I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
Funny enough, Masahiro Sakurai just wrapped up his multi-year YouTube series on creating games...which brings back to to mind that a new Smash will eventually happen on whatever Nintendo's newest console is. And we don't know how much, if any, direct control he'll have over its creation...and in our world, more importantly, what that roster will be. He has pretty much stated that Ultimate was his magnum opus, and any future game having the roster include everyone would be nearly impossible. While the Mewtwo fandom has been stronger than ever - the torch effectively passed on to TC-96 for SFW Mewtwo work, and LaPatte for NSFW work - there will be new gamers who have their first experience with Pokemon characters as a whole from this new Smash, whenever it may come to pass. What will they see? Will Mewtwo hold his spot and further cement his status in the living, breathing video game hall of fame? Only time will tell.
