This sunday, I'm going to be at shiftercon online. We're going to talk about BBS, MUDs, ftp, AIM, AHWW, TSA, WOC, LTF, NMF, and the fact we had to acronym everything back then because of file size naming restrictions.
Oh, and transformation.
Oh, and transformation.
AHWW9212.TXT
The Apple iic ran on a whopping 128 KB computer.
The standard was set, and even more advanced systems would only tack on a larger file name size indexing system to describe the file but keep the actual eight character limit for internal processes so as to be backwards compatible.
That kind of economy with characters trend bled into everything else.
- dial-up internet (get off the phone! whoops sorry were u on the internet?)
- Win95 (DLL hell)
- 2gb harddrive was **hot**
- no usb sticks, maybe 40mb Zip disk
- DOS driver conflicts grrr
- no Gmail for free accounts / FA / DA / sofurry / SPAM
but
- Transfur also had stories
- TSA updated regularly
Have to go sift thru some files nostalgically now. Need a furry wayback machine :)
