Marty Here! Time for your week 3 results!, writtten by Pythos:
New York at New Orleans
The Corsairs come into today’s game at 0-2, and desperately need a win. Fortunately, they have last year’s number one overall pick Leone Lopez carrying the rock. The Defiant had no answer for the young back, as he pounded their defense for 133 yards on 25 carries. That’s not to say that the Corsairs ran away with it. New York actually led for most of the first three quarters, until New Orleans tied things up at 21. The Defiant took the lead once more with a slant pass to Justice Matari that the agile serval took 84 yards to the house early in the fourth quarter. But Flip Penguinator was up to the task, tying the game again with a pass to tight end Robert Ruiz. The Corsairs D then locked things down, holding New York to a long field goal attempt that was wide left, before Penguinator found Mtendere Idowu in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead score with 40 seconds remaining, their first lead of the day.
Final score: NOC 35, NYD 28
EAS at NSH
This week’s theme seems to be shaping up to be second-half comebacks. Once again, we moved into the third quarter with a previously-unbeaten team trailing and hurting. Draco Lindwurm would dislocate a talon on his throwing hand on the first possession of the game, and Virginia Pratt shanked a chip-shot field goal. Back QB Michelle Housley took four sacks in the first half, including two back-to-back to end the second quarter, and would eventually be benched herself after a hard hit sent her into the tent for a concussion check. However, Roman Oliviera would throw a pick-six in the fourth quarter to give Easton their first lead of the game, and Pratt would redeem herself with an insurance field goal late. Despite having to use four different quarterbacks, the Bald Eagles would escape with their unbeaten record intact.
Final score: EAS 24, NSH 17
Grand Rapids at Austin
Well, this game tried to follow our week’s pattern, but unfortunately the refs got in the way. For the first three quarters, it was a low-scoring, defensive battle. Austin didn’t manage to put its first points on the board until the third quarter, but after a two-point conversion it was only a one-score game despite that. A second two-point conversion after a Nicky Ricky TD catch would knot things up at 16 all in the fourth quarter. However, the Blues would be undone by penalties and special teams play. Undisciplined play would lead to 14 accepted penalties against Austin, costing the team over 100 yards. And kicker Raleigh Cooper had a game he wishes he could forget, missing all three of his field goal attempts. Despite this, the game was still tied with only three minutes to play. But a facemask penalty would give the Dragons first and goal, and rookie Dahlia Taylor would catch her second game-winning touchdown in as many weeks.
Final score: GRD 30, ATX 23
Baltimore at Downriver
Downriver might have had the most controversial week off the field, with Lillian Newman publicly blasting the team’s personnel decisions on social media. She drew the start this week, and performed well given that she hasn’t had many reps even during the preseason. Three touchdown passes, including two from the hurry-up offense at the end of the game, were a good sign for her readiness. The lack of reps did show in some significant mistakes, however, including a dumpoff under pressure that went right into Kiyoshi Kiyama’s hands for a pick-six. Despite some inconsistencies, it was actually the Waves *defense* that let the team down today. Downriver allowed 461 yards of offense, including 131 yards on the ground for rookie rusher Kennedy Rodriguez, his first career 100-yard game. At least their special teams were firing on all cylinders, successfully converting an onside kick that would lead to a second touchdown in less than two minutes. It would be too little too late, however. Don’t look now, but after two losing seasons the Ponies are actually 2-1 and are looking better than they have in years.
Final score: BAL 41, DWN 31
Richmond at Miami
Speaking of improved teams, this game was actually much closer than the box score makes it look. Despite losing their starting quarterback to a concussion last week, Richmond still managed almost 400 yards of total offense this week. First overall pick Royce Jackson had 75 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries, and outstanding 8.3 yards per carry average. Unfortunately, backup quarterback Andy Kaylers, making his first career start in his third season, threw two interceptions, keeping Miami in the game throughout. The Tropics didn’t pull away until the fourth quarter, though, putting up 17 unanswered points in the final frame. It was quite a chippy game overall too, with a combined 18 penalties for 173 yards.
Final score: MIA 43, RIC 23
North Florida at Chicago
The phenomenon of the Furbowl hangover appears to be real. After winning it all last season, the Outlaws ran into major cap issues, especially on the defense. It seems to be seriously hurting their ability to get a stop, as they have allowed almost 500 yards of offense in two consecutive games. Granted, their opponents in those games are a combined 5-1, but much better things were expected of a team that hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2014. Notably, they can’t seem to stop the run at all. Ronald McSnow gouged them for 166 yards on the ground, and Tyler Wirl scored two rushing touchdowns in the four quarter. If there’s a bright side to this game, it’s that those two touchdowns were the margin of victory, and the Outlaws actually had the game tied halfway through the fourth quarter.
Final score: NFR 31, CHI 17
Colorado at Las Vegas
Yup, our theme this week is definitely fourth-quarter comebacks, whether successful or not. In Las Vegas’s case, they *nearly* pulled off a big one. Down by 21 points in the third quarter, Sylvester Stapler put the team on his back, throwing for three touchdowns in the last 17 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, a 51 yard Matt Souber field goal spoiled the comeback, as the Bandits couldn’t convert an onside kick attempt and they fell by three.
Final score: COL 27, LVB 24
Players of the Week:
Offense: Roland McSnow (RB – NFR): 166 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown
Defense: Richard Dixon (LB – MIA): 5 tackles, a sack, an interception and a safety
Special Teams: Renato Hanna (WR – DWN): six kickoff returns for 206 yards (a team record), including a 96 yard TD return
