"Red One"
So its been six days since the end of Midwest Fur Fest and I'm still not home from con. I've instead detoured southeast after con to Kentucky to be with my family for nine days before the holidays.
In the meantime that I've been here my mother and sister wanted to see a film called "Red One". I really don't see many films in theaters anymore but I tagged along since I'm here on vacation so I might as well do something. You know what; its perfectly fine for a movie. I cheated and read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia before actually seeing it just to read what the beats were throughout the film because I just was curious, but even having some idea of where the film was heading there were times between major points that were little surprises and fun little creative sparks.
Its a film that just knows what it is. Creative and fun, fanciful enough to be fantasy, but still grounded to be of this reality in its dialog and actions. I went in with some idea of the story, but still low expectations, and at the end left feeling not displeased at all over what I'd seen. Perfectly okay for a Christmas film.
There's one particular scene that sort of stood out where there's a ton of extras on set in a castle tavern setting with an abundance of makeup effects, and if those masks are all indeed practical, they look like really good practical effects and I'm happy to see that versus taking the easy way out of shortcutting it just doing digital effects.
While I'm enjoying my time out here in Kentucky, I also am desiring to be home next Thursday.
