2023 UFFL season week 16 results and Final week 17 previe...

We are down to the last week of the season! Here Marty with your results of week 16:
New Orleans at Chicago
Despite having one of the best running backs in the game, Chicago’s rushing game has been surprisingly light this season, averaging only 90 yards total per game. Well, that stat is going to change after this one. Jean-Etienne Tremblay set team records with 159 yards on the ground and an 81 yard TD run in which he broke four tackles. That score broke a 10-10 tie at the end of the first quarter, and from there Chicago was off to the races, adding a 58 yard punt return TD for good measure (the first return TD of the season for the Outlaws, and the first career return TD for Maurice Adams). Final score: CHI 38, NOC 17
California at Easton
Easton jumped out to an early lead in this one, building up a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. But the Demons slowly began to chip away, until they tied things up at 17 apiece in the third quarter on a dumpoff to Aaron Whitman that the running back took in for a score. From there, things got a little crazy. Whitman scored again on a huge breakaway 53 yard run in the fourth quarter to give California its first lead of the game, but the Bald Eagles forced two consecutive three and outs and were able to pull ahead again with 65 seconds remaining, on a 65-yard catch and run by Nolan Pykken on a 4th and 1 (the longest catch of Pykken’s career so far). California still had two time outs remaining, and they were able to use them to get down to the Easton 43 yard line with 30 seconds left. They could tie the game with a field goal, but it was third down and they wanted to see if they could get about 10 more yards to give Castonguay a better shot. They needed ten…they got 43. Mylene Jean slipped two tackles and took it down the sideline for the go-ahead touchdown with only ten seconds left on the clock! Easton set up for a Hail Mary attempt after the kickoff, but Lindwurm was sacked without getting the ball off. Final score: CAL 31, EAS 27
Las Vegas at Nashville
Unfortunately, that last game stole all of the excitement from this one. Nashville had a grand total of 23 rushing yards – not a typo – and Sylvester Stapler only managed to pass for 213 yards despite having an 83.9% completion rate. The Bandits DID manage to block a 51 yard field goal attempt, so I guess that was exciting on special teams. Final score: LVB 10, NSH 9
Montreal at New York
Both of these teams are headed to the playoffs, so let’s not bury the lede on this one. Vito Ligustica left the game after only one possession and may miss multiple games. Rookie Yash Zuro got the lead back role for the rest of the game, but wasn’t able to even average 3 yards per carry. Granted, when you’re playing behind Ligustica you don’t get many first-team reps at practice. Despite the injury, Tyron Appleby played one of his best games of the season to compensate, throwing for three touchdowns and a 140.7 passer rating. The Defiant hung on for most of the game, but the Royal went up by three scores midway through the third quarter and New York wasn’t able to catch up. Final score: MTL 33, NYD 22
Baltimore at Austin
This is a rare stat in modern football: a team winning with the same amount of rushing yards as passing. Jillian St. Claire had an off-day at the office, with only 176 passing yards. But she also added 64 yards and a touchdown with her legs, and the team as a whole had 173 rushing yards. That St. Claire touchdown was actually the game winner. Baltimore had cruised to a 14-0 lead at halftime, but the Blues came back to tie the game on two 1 yard touchdowns by Wyatt Curran. Neither team was able to score for the last eight minutes of the game, so we headed to overtime. Baltimore won the toss, and St. Claire put the team on her back. Almost all of her rushing yardage came during overtime, with a 26 yard designed run for the TD to cap off the game. Final score: BAL 20, ATX 14
Richmond at Colorado
When your team is having a season to forget, you need to look at the incremental gains as you go. Richmond actually managed to score 20 points today, their first game with 20+ points since Week 7. Darnell Paige also had his best statistical game since Week 12 (though he still threw two picks, and leads the league with 20 despite missing seven games). On the other side, Kyle Gradkowski set a Colorado team record with 167 receiving yards on only four catches. Final score: COL 43, RIC 20
Miami at Grand Rapids
Heartbreak for Miami today, as they saw a 6 point lead slip away in the final 11 minutes of the game, losing despite outgaining their opponent by almost 100 yards. Of course, that yardage advantage was neutralized by the Tropics giving up over 100 yards from penalties, including an absolute crusher on Grand Rapids’ go-ahead touchdown drive. Linebacker Richard Dixon was flagged for delay of game on a fourth and four when the refs caught him flopping to fake an injury, giving the Dragons a free first down. It was just another in a series of catastrophes that ruined an otherwise good game, from having a punt blocked on their first possession to Wil Hudson leaving the game with what looked to be a serious wrist injury to his throwing hand. Final score: GRD 20, MIA 16
North Florida at Downriver
We end with a big battle between Becker and Newman. Earlier this season, the Renegades beat the Waves with a score of 31-17 on the strength of Caryn Becker’s four TD day (three passing, one rushing). Today’s results are almost identical: the Renegades put up 31 points, and Becker once again had four touchdowns (all passing this time). She DIDN’T win Player of the Game this time around, though. Lillian Newman continued her amazing rushing streak with another 100 yard performance, and led two scoring drives off of North Florida turnovers in the last four minutes of the game. Lucky von Braunschweig recovered Downriver’s onside kick attempt, however, so there was no chance for her to attempt a last second game winner. Though they may have won, the Renegades also received some serious bad news. Caryn Becker suffered a shoulder stinger on the play that resulted in the final turnover, and is doubtful for next week. Final score: NFR 31, DWN 26
Players of the Week
Offense: Lillian Newman (QB – DWN): 24/35 passing for 179 yards and two TDs, plus 134 rushing yards
Defense: Joannie Lawler (LB – NSH): 9 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble
Special Teams: Maurice Adams (WR – CHI): two kickoff returns for 37 yards, and three punt returns for 70 yards, including a 58 yard return TD
Thus with being the final week of the season, it mean that Playoffs implications are down to the final day. For the United, the playoff board is set, with Chicago, Montreal, Las Vegas and New York, making it to the big dance. As for the continental, Downriver, North Florida and Colorado are in, as Grand Rapids and Baltimore has one week left to fight for a shot to be on the road to Austing for Furbowl 9!
