I recently got my hands on a laptop with a bad Windows xp messed up so taking a thumb drive I downloaded Linux zorin os it got the laptop working .
But being a person new to Linux it seem to be actual learning curve . First thing first you going have to find the right Linux os that works with the computer/ laptop . The second is making the thumb drive into a bootable . So far installing the OS is the easy part and setting up the time and all that is fine but the app store is confusing since code part for downloading is confusing for me since am still completely new to Linux.
Reason I picked zorin it a Linux os it one of a number of is that Windows like tho if it doesn't work I am happy of any suggestions what Windows like Linux os you use or think better for a laptop that use to run Windows XP. Since it free it didn't cost an arm or a leg get the OS like Windows and mac
( Might have find another Linux that Windows like it seem zorin tab but resource heavy for this old laptop. Information about the laptop at bottom of this journal.)
Looking through the flathub.org site I made a list of apps,software,games download
Wine - run Windows based programs and games
Vlc player - to watch download video and watch DVD
Emulators - to play older game like nes, snes, N64, GameCube, PlayStation.
OpenOffice - it seems comes with majority of Linux os ( not worry about it, tho any add-ons will requires finding again if they are still there)
Find software automate download code process. So I do not have deal code/ command part of it if there is any.
Look at Linux versions of Minecraft see witch one work with all mods out there. ( there several of them find one that works offline.)
Look at RTS games ( game make you strategize and make you think)
Look at open world games
Look at sandbox games.
Look at platform games
look at puzzles games
Look for Linux chat/ messenger app
Look for Linux streaming software
Look for Linux tv/radio/satellite software ( requires Usb tv/radio tuner)
Look for Linux game making software
Look for Linux audio editing software

Painet.net- it a paint program I know work with it what I used make seal/runes
Open canvas - I have Old version on CD and should work (hopefully)
Dungeon craft map maker ( have software and additional stuff to it on CD . It free but software hard to find now a days as well the additional parts.)
Plans vs zombies - have game cd
Popcap game CD ( have the CD number of games )
Look at itch.com for games and so on ( there a lot free games to try out this includes Linux Windows and Mac and the few Android games )
Manga comic software. ( requires getting some major funds) $500 minimum since putting custom characters cost additional. Might require getting a new more up to date computer)
Unity software and apps ( requires getting some major funds( $4000 minimum)
( Unity might require getting a new more up to date computer to just function since it requires high end stuff function well. )
Do any you who use Linux have any advice or any helpful information for someone that completely new to it . If you know someone who use Linux could you lead to this journal so they give any knowledge or hints that be useful to beginner.
This zorin is app store lead to flathub witch not a bad collection of apps and games but any attempt download take a while and the code pop-up appear fire need command of some sort this new to me , and There some way automate this process not to deal with it.
( If i sound like a idiot it because I am a first time useing Linux and app store because my last laptop was window xp that been running rather well for a used laptop I got it back 2006 or 2008 I can 't put finger on it but it stoped working around 2020 I saved the hard drive I need find usb device link up to the hard drive this way I can hopefully save stuff as far back 2002 . I hope I can have easy transition to Linux since I can not afford new laptop or computer with very limited budget that surviving month to month. And converting a used laptop with busted Windows os to a Linux was free and it didn't hinder the funds.

If anyone knows how get internet for cheap ( less then $40 ) hell I even agree to dsl speed it mean no data restrictions like some the high speed cell networks do or if there a charity or grant I need fill out with help on this since internet access it not getting cheaper I live middle of nowhere where two closest major cities are 30 to 45 miles away and two small town 10 to 13 miles away . broadband cable is not possible in my area so it have go through the cell tower network. I live also in a dead zone for satellite reception ( they do actually exist) and even affording satellite internet requires $100 low range and depending who your provider you can be charged extra on your bill once you go past your paid limit, funds I can't afford Since most funds go to bills, utilities, food.
I also in food in a box program both receive one I also volunteer there as well and give people understand how tight thing are with Bindenomics that still in effect have screwed people over, the place gives out anywhere between 200 to 400 good size box of food that can good, dry goods, and a hand full frozen item ( this depends on what been donated or from others places) and we have came dangerous close running out of boxes of food and twice running completely out with a good number angry people that waited in line for 4 to 5 hours.
I also been getting internet access where ever I can find it using a old fire tablet . Usually access anywhere from 20 to 35 minutes since I Look a bit suspicious for very long periods of time any more then that. Since there no internet at home . This why my online time seem erratic to those that know me
This reason I asked about cheap internet. Since I was on dial-up till 2018 since they kept jacking the price up so we would get faster net connection. Now lowest net connection around here is $60 with restricted data amount to just even do streaming, downloading, updating, so on would require data plan that over $100 or higher because Linux os data as small as 300mb to as high as 20GB and streaming services, youtube, facebook, downloading software and updating software would eat up restricted data plan rather quickly.

Software downloads including updating 1.5 - 10 Gb
Any game from the internet 300mb to 1.5 Gb
Just on this it be already over data plan rather quickly

It iffy what ram range is since I have not figured out were find information through Linux yet.

You will also want to get Proton for improved performance of Windows games.
There are a ton of options and a ton of software packages to meet your needs. I bet you will feel comfy once you get the feel of it. Many Linux builds also are more and more GUI (desktop) focused for easier use, not just the command line.
