Change is Scary

ROOS. Yes, Roos. The more roos the better. Thicktails galore.
Life is all about moving forward, because you can't go back. How you handle those challenges in front of you is the hard part. Especially when you don't know the outfome.
My current employer lost the contract for the site I work at. This isn't unusual and each time the new vendor comes in to grab as many of the existing staff to carry over site knowledge. I've been through three vendors so far and now the fourth job change is in front of me with the newest vendor. They say they want everyone to transfer over, but their job recruitement process has been rather disjointed and incomplete, leaving most of us in the dark as to what is happening. They have until July 1st, so I hope they figure it out soon. I was offered a position, but at far below market rate. Damn. Still, anything that keeps that mortgage paid is a realistic goal for me, so you do what you need to do.
Or is it?
A friend has recommended I apply at their place for a position and title that I have held unofficially before, I have the skill set needed, and it would honestly be a real challenge and fun experience to try out for. I don't think I'll ever advance in my current position, so this might be an opportunity to go forward into the unknown. Probably won't get selected, but knowing an inside person and what challenges they face, I might have an advantage. You don't know unless you try. Sometimes those opportunities are slapping you in the face to wake up and stop just accepting things the way they are.
Take a chance.
What's that phrase? Why not me?

No room for advancement at your current gig is certainly a big factor to consider -- especially if the new guys in charge are lowballing you. Would "far below market rate" mean actually taking a pay cut to stay in that position, or would it just be maintaining the existing status quo?
New vendor is paying about $5k higher than my current wage, but that is still $10-20k under average for the industry
Stay for now, but apply for the new position. If you get it, I'd make the jump.
One career I had several contract jobs that moved from one contractor to another. At one location in particular the entire crew had to take two different psychological tests. I think if the candidate passed they were denied continued employment. Heck, I spent more than seven years there (with 3 different employers)...
While the position isn't a guarantee. I say give it a shot. You miss every chance you don't take. An while I hate the word Nepotism,
it might not be a bad idea to know someone who might have a broader network then you, to help you out.
Luck is fickle, so I instead, wish you success in your endeavor. May this change be for the better
somethign like that happened at my current job, the new company offered a generous raise in salaries, but things aren't going too smoothly. if one foreign co-worker complains about the other foreign co-workers and says "we need a german in the position as team leader, foreigners can't do it", you know there is trouble ahead. :P
my brother used to work for STRABAG, doing facility tech and maintenance and stuff. one day Telekom had it in their mind to switch to a far cheaper company. the guys working at their building smelled shyte when it turned up that the new company has zero experience with facility maintenance; they used to only do catering for parties and companies... so the new company tried to hire the staff for the buildings, but for beginner's wage (everybody already had numerous extra skills and experiences and whatnot) so nobody caught.
about half a year later Telekom came back with many a kotau asking for a new contract, since the oh-so-cheap new company botched up hard.
