Hey blender users, we could use your help!
A lot of folks these days seem to be using my node setup that manipulates the normals of fur for a smoother look, and if you're an eevee user it's been grand- but if you're a Cycles user it just doesn't work due to a blender bug. The bug has been reported, but the devs just ain't moving on it. And even if you don't use cycles, it really should work for cycles anyway, but the devs don't seem to give hair and fur a ton of love lately. There's still no physics for the new hair system, even a few years into it being made, for example. I'M NOT BITTER.
Well,
sentharn is trying to give the devs a gentle push to maybe consider fixing their shit. There's a blender community that's designed to help the devs know what the community is interested in, and Sen has made a post there about the problem- it would be grand if you could go give the post a little updoot, maybe even leave a comment if this has been bothering you. You'll have to make an account if you don't have one, but it only takes a second. Keep it SFW, keep it civil, but letting them know that it's not just one weirdo who wants to see this fixed, but a whole bunch of weirdos, could help finally get their attention.
It's worth a try, I guess!
Their post about it is here, if you want to details: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/60596978/

Oops, no wait, I mean thanks. :D
Blender nerds are too soft with their tools and features
The humble 3DS Max user cares not for niceties; we’ll render anything with the sticks and stones we’re given and it’ll look like complete shit, the way God intended
(Totally not jealous ;-;)
Being un-goofy, I admittedly never gave Blender a fair chance. I learned 3D stuff exclusively on Max ;-;
that's a name i haven't heard in quite some time...didn't know they were still around!
They have gone rental software mode so I'm still using my student version from 2010 and it still works like a charm! :3
But I do think I'll be looking into ways to get it when I graduate in a few months so I can get access on my pc.
I thought I knew why there was that "bug" in Blender, but then I read again more carefully the bug report, and I think I was wrong, so I didn't want to pollute the comments area with a wrong assumption.
that's very thoughtful of you!
corollary: same is true for what the results of the use of those tools are... nobody is entitled to free pr0n, so be nice to the kinky bastards who share their talent. "Talent belongs to all of humanity, artists must give away their work and buttslave to their fans" has always been a load of crap and always will be.
i have also been told not to bother trying to fix particle hair bugs for the past few years despite geonodes hair still being not ready for prime time. for example, they broke "long hair" in 2.93.4 when using an image texture as a density map: https://projects.blender.org/blende.....r/issues/91887 and they have no plans to fix it.
...but geonodes hair does not support physics still, and as we recently discovered, also can't be separately subdivided finely enough to be used for hair styling on our scenes without also massively inflating the render time of fur because the subdivision control for geonodes hair is per-scene and not per-object like the old particle systems. it's a known issue and, again, the features are identified but not planned and are not on a roadmap anytime soon. so in the meantime, all hair systems using geonodes share a default subdivision value of 3 steps (8 segment) with a nice // TODO in the code that says "don't hardcode this" (it is hardcoded). the "additional subdivision" control in the render panel is added to every geonodes hair system whether or not it needs it.
i spend a lot of time on the blender bug tracker and triaging bugs. i wish it was as simple as you say.
This is giving me early Wayland vibes.
i love the blender devs, i really do, but the whole "we're not going to fix it but we also have no plans on when the replacement is ready" thing has been old ever since they deprecated particle hair like a decade ago (and even broke particle hair and didn't fix it: https://projects.blender.org/blende.....r/issues/91887 )
anyway i do look forward to a better NLA-ish system...eventually.
Also, I don't know if you saw, Ruaidri, but Blender Guru posted an hour long video the other day about using EEVEE. It had a bunch of information in there that I certainly didn't know, like the use of the light probes. If you haven't already, I recommend giving it a watch.
Hope spreading the word helps!
Don't get your hopes up, because this stuff only gets addressed if they have someone capable or someone that wants to fix it because of some open movie project. Nowadays, it's all about crazy Geo nodes stuff that 90% of the userbase isn't going to use, because most of the userbase are artists and not programmers.
Yes, I'm a bit bitter. Atleast they have been addressing Cycles rendering performances and making the sculpting toolset more useful. But there are sooo many outdated systems in Blender that never get any attention.
I'm happy there is a huge addon market for Blender, otherwise I would've probably moved to another software.

i tried.
It's a really tough nut to crack- and adding fur into the mix only makes it more challenging because it makes a clean outline just about impossible. I poke away at it myself from time to time, but similarly haven't been met with great results yet.
And I'm pretty sure your node setup doesn't work for the particle fur system in 4.3-4.4.
