Hey there fuzzies!
We are here to officially announce that Display Names have moved out of FA+ beta testing and are now available for all users!
"What are Display Names?"
We first announced the soft launch on this journal! link
Reminder that Display Name changes are only on Modern Theme, Classic is not being updated with new features.
Current restrictions on naming are pretty straightforward:
* No hate speech or slurs.
* No NSFW content.
* Display Names can only accept alphanumeric input as well as " " (space), "." (dot) , "_" (underscore), "-" (dash) and "~" (tilde).
* Emojis and non-latin characters are disallowed.
* Display Names must be between "3" and "30" characters in length. (for the time being.)
* Site policies still apply. (For example, impersonating other users/staff is not allowed.)
FA+ members will have the perk of being able to change every 24 hours. Non-FA+ members will be able to change their Display Name every week (7 days).
The Display Name field can be found on your Profile Info page. All changes will be logged and the last 10 Display Names will be publicly viewable via a dropdown next to the username below the site banner.

I looked on the link in the journal to see exactly what it was, but I'm not seeing anything to put in a Display name.

As far as features it has, I have no idea as I've never used them nor even know what they are.
Maybe if the sidebar could be toggled off, but otherwise, it just isn't for me.
I just always hope that the issues I have on the Beta site will be fixed by the time I have to use it.
I hop onto the Beta site now and then to check, but I always have to go back to Classic to preform basic features.
I know people like the Beta version, and I don't fault them for that, it just isn't currently for me.
Most social media sites actually do allow full name changes, which DOES tend to wreak havoc on profile links. Truth is, link rot is just part of the internet.
Think of it like, one name is the account name, the other name is just a name tag
If you tag someone's username, it'll show as their display name and pfp (depending on how you tagged them) but will still link to their profile.
The biggest advantage being that you can allow characters that aren't allowed in account names, (such as spaces), and that it allows case-insensitive account names. (e.g. On a number of sites, my account name is "chakatfirepaw" while my display name is "Chakat Firepaw".)
On the fun side, it also makes it easy to have short term changes that don't impact the account, (such as using a spooky version of your name in October).

A question: Is uniqueness enforced? For example, if someone uses the display name "Bravo", can another user have the same display name?
In regarding to full username changes, is this on the roadmap for future updates?
You can search for "rename our accounts" to find it quickly.
...Not sure if I want to keep mine or change it. Still, hell yeah!

Some people can choose to do silly things if you don't rate limit functionality, ranging from scamming others and trying to hide their tracks to making their display name a constantly changing random disco of things.
The added auditing and logging also make it an issue of resource/space utilization.
From now on Dragonsaurus0 is called Drago.

But if you're on Classic Mode; you cannot change it. Classic is not being supported with new features any longer.

Ok, not really hate, but definitely inconvenient. Looking forward to those being allowed as well as extended "Romanji" characters, including all the nice-looking Vietnamese variants. And I say this as an only English-speaking American. I've tried expanding my language palette - my username's derived from Latin - but learning languages is hard and I'm busy. /excuses

I've been wondering if there is a reason why we can set our mood in our profile settings, in the personal information section, but it's not publicly visible on our profiles? o.0
In the future, would you guys consider a pronouns option too, like discord?
Does the system enforce no collisions between given display names, or otherwise help users to disambiguate between them?
This does not feel quite like other sites where a "display name" is the ONLY user name to get shown/known publicly, or where the two are readily displayed side-by-side (a la Twitter).

The issues I had occurred outside of the site since my FA footprint could not be completely removed from search engines. Ex: Art trades or commissions I get from others, which are uploaded here, and they say it's for me.
I like the feature, but it's definitely not bulletproof.
No promises that it'll be implemented, but I can assure you that they are aware of it. <3
The way display names appear on classic theme is pretty chaotic atm, unsure if intentional or not, it'd be good to have some control over it and a way to check that someone posting is the person you assume it is.
I do have to ask though, is there a way to turn off "previous aliases"? My new display name is a very minor change, so it feels superfluous. If there isn't, do you have plans to implement that soon?
And while the years and years of broken promises, tech issues, lack of transparency, and general bad decisions are still heavy on my mind, its little things like this that are slowly adding up my hope for a brighter future for FA. I've been on this site "officially" since about 2011, and "unofficially" since about 2009, so this is promising.

Still waiting on folders for Favorites or a way to separate YCH and pics in favs so its not so cluttered.
Now, the next big step would probably be account renames so I could finally turn the page on that character name I stopped using years ago
For those like me that are on Classic theme, you can switch to modern to change it and then switch back to classic, the changes remain.
A lot of people aren't using the feature, effectively putting their name twice at the top of every post, and on their profile. Which looks.. cluttered.
Could it be considered that if someone doesn't use the feature it just shows the username and not the 'display name'? I think it'd look a lot cleaner.
I don't personally need it but I know some friends who would love this

The current design of the Modern theme is basically the PornHub version of DeviantArt, and considering Dragoneer's vehement stance against content featuring minors, I don't think I need to elaborate on why having a visual similarity to a website with a reputation for not removing illegal content is not a good optic for FurAffinity.
To switch between the two: Account Management -> Account Settings -> Site Layout/Theme -> Modern
Just confirm with your password in order for the theme switch to stick.
Than follow this journal's instructions (and rules) for your display name.
To switch back do this: Account Management -> Account Settings -> Site Layout/Theme -> Classic
Confirm password and bingo, you have a display name while using Classic.

How does tagging a profile work now? Do you use the original profile name, or the new display name?
My most requested feature comes over a decade (and three account changes) late, and it doesn't work on the layout that actually functions properly on PC so I'll probably have to make a new account anyway. Can't wait for you to tell us you're removing Classic entirely and forcing everyone over to Modern. Whatever "Modern" is supposed to mean.

I don't care if classic never received updates, but I actually hope it never changes.
Please leave classic the way it is, and please allow us to continue using it, even if it won't have bug support etc.

all they had to do was move the location of this to the Username, and instead the pretended to add a new feature to try and get people to pay money for it.
They literally ruined an older feature to do this too.

I've wanted to change my display name for so long so it aligns with my deviantart and facebook pages and now I finally can
and move the spot over where the Username is.
We quite literally already had this feature AND it worked better because you could put entire sentences in other languages in it.
A feature that literally worked better UNTIL THIS UPDATE already existed for years.

THIS JOURNAL IS JUST PLAIN WRONG the new usernames DO show in Classic. I am literally using it RIGHT NOW.
The buttons for NEXT and PREVIOUS are literally STILL labeled incorrectly in Modern!
They have still not properly labeled buttons that GO FORWARD AND BACKWARDS. They literally go in the incorrect direction
and their choice was to try and fix a problem that was solved YEARS AGO instead.
I am sorry, I've heard of the issues plaguing the development of the site,
but this has to be one of the silliest oversights I've seen in a very long time,
and when I know staff is probably less than 100 people, and you have ONE guy screaming at you that your problems were already solves that all you had to do was move cosmetic locations instead of coding an entire function that does the exact same thing in a different spot

Display Names and User Titles are both still in use and functionally different.
Display nNames were initially locked behind FA+ for beta testing but now that is no longer the case, thus this very journal!
User Titles are still the same dynamic text box that allows you to give yourself what you're claiming. It's on the same page, infact in the same text area as Display Names. And unlike Display Names, there's no cooldown on changing it.
While you cannot *change* your Display Name on Classic; in order to not break that particular version of the website Classic received it too. Classic is only being maintained in such a way as to keep it chugging along and not being broken when updates are made to the Modern infrastructure.
I have forwarded your feedback about the buttons to Tech. Any other professionally constructed feedback can be sent in via a Trouble Ticket.
Also, no it is absolutely not the same, because the update literally changed how User Titles work as well.
I used to have the name Շคภ๏๏кเςคՇ๏๏ภ in there for the same reason I wanted to go ahead and use Display names, because I was like "cool so it changes your name"
Lo and behold, the Display name did not accept Շคภ๏๏кเςคՇ๏๏ภ, and because I edited the profile after the update, it truncated my user title that originally had the name.
As for why you cannot change your User Title back to that; I will say send in a tech trouble ticket.
I've already sent in the trouble ticket with all the complaints, but people like to pick and choose what they want to focus on in a single complaint,
and then they complain if I send it separate reports for every single thing.
Can I get an answer to a complaint that isn't someone telling me to do something that I have already done?

I've been in this community since 2008, since I was 17. My account can vote and people act like I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm not a professional computer engineer, but good lord, this small thread of comments is the first time in almost two or three years anyone said anything about the direction of the gallery buttons.
Yall had left pointing right, and right pointing left, and I'm here in Classic, where they are labeled correctly,
wondering why I have a commenter, complaining that they don't know where my comic is, because they keep pressing next on the cover, and it wont go to the next page.
FA is basically operating "modern" on sunken cost fallacy at this point. You might as well scrap the whole thing and start over with classic again.
Don't even get me started on how BANNERS are correctly displayed in classic,
but in modern, they go off the side of the screen where no one can see it.

Yes, I use Classic, but regardless of UI, this seems to be a glaring error or annoyance. Perhaps don't use display names in these lists, or put a column for them a slight distance from the username. That way we can still search for users as we remember, but be aware they have a different display name? Overwriting it in the watch lists is making for confusion.
