18 years being a furry!
I was 14 years old, when I sat in my dark room at home, 1 o'clock after midnight, idly watching TV. And suddenly on came an Anime called 'Wolf's Rain'.
This marks the point my whole life turned around.
I was just SO inspired by the idea this anime proposed, this "reverse transformation". Not humans who transform into wolves, but wolves who blend in with humans. And not by transformation either, but by illusion! I was hooked instantly.
I always felt strongly for animals in general, growing up on a small farm. But around the same time I felt even more strongly for wolves, because of 'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess'. I was obsessed with wolves! Of course I have seen about every popular Disney or Nintendo anthro-character before too. But it was Wolf's Rain that finally tipped me over the edge.
It just spoke to me on so many levels, I wanted to find out more about it, I wanted to talk about it. Soon enough I would find myself on a german fan-forum for Wolf's Rain, created by
fallenwolf. I wanted to create an account, and for it I had to pick a name.
I remembered there was this drawing I had made at school; just four wolf faces, inspired by the four wolves of the anime. I colored them, gave them certain markings. And I had given each of them a name; names I thought of myself. I wish I could remember the other three, but one for certain was called Karn. "I like this name, I'll use that one!"
This happened on 17.04.2007. From there on it was a slippery slope to create my fursona, make friends, celebrating our wolf-selves, and eventually finding myself amidst the furry fandom.
I've stayed here ever since. And I will ever after.
I love you all.
Karn's canon age is calculated to my real age in dog years: ([Current Year] - 1992) / 7
So Karn is canonically 4 years old. He will be 5 years old in 2027.*
*This is adult for his species. Karn is an adult.

Gosh, it's been a little over 20 years for me now.
I remember back in 2001 when the Gamecube was on the verge of release, seeing a VERY cool little teaser photo of Fox McCloud in a then-upcoming new title called Starfox Adventures. Then I saw a picture of him paired up with a new character named Krystal and I was like DUDE, THAT'S NEAT!!!
So I searched Google for "Starfox Adventures Wallpaper" or something to that extent. Among the listed search results, there was a very small link to a website called X-cuco.com (or X-Red, I think? One of the two, for sure.) This newfound website navigated me even further down into a VERY gnarly gallery of digital furry artwork with a heavy industrial metal track playing in the BG for added ambience. I browsed through this page and realized I had stumbled onto a tickle torture-heavy fetish-driven page... but I had nO IDEA what to expect! I didn't imagine seeing Fox strapped up in a chair with feathers brushing against his toe-paws. This was a strange yet liberating bit of exposure for me. Afterwards came VLC, the liberation of Poofywolf and sharing written projects to SoFurry, then Guppy's Paint BBS and soon enough, I stumbled upon this website around 2006, just a few months shy after graduating high school. Since then, I've ditched my old teen-angsty goth-emo-laden userhandle for the one I now currently use and have used for a while now: Gratitude-Advocate. :3
Thanks for sharing this lovely, insightful and memorable journal! The nostalgia is just too good to pass up. 8)
