I am so confused right now it's not funny anymore

So yesterday my mom and I decided to watch a movie on TV, so I put my laptop away because she doesn't like it when I use it when we're watching something. So everything's fine and all, and soon the movie ended, so I picked up my laptop again, and realized the mouse wasn't responding and the red light underneath was turned off. So after a while I say "It must be broken or something, I'll buy a new one tomorrow"
And so I go to the store, buy a new mouse, go home and start my laptop. When in Windows, I plug in the new mouse, and see the red light activate, indicating it's turned on. The only problem is; it wasn't moving. After restarting the computer a few times, still nothing. A side note is that when I started the computer, all the information on MSN Messenger had disappeared, and I had to re-enter my Email address and password, and when clicking on Sign in, it immediately gave me an error, but after rebooting once it did work O.o
So I decided to try something, and started my old laptop, to see if it had the same problem, and just for fun plug in my old mouse, and guess what? It worked.. So then I try to plug in the new mouse, and poof, it installed it and it worked fine! At first I thought the USB ports of my laptop were broken or something, but it does accept portable harddrives..
It's like this laptop is constantly trying to find a way to annoy me >.<

Yeah, because Macs are totally immune to hardware problems. -_-
I really hate when a journal or topic about computer issues always has the obligatory "Get a mac" suggestion. You do realize that at the cost of the Mac, you could buy 3 PCs? Most of us aren't loaded with cash, and those of us that are prefer an expandable PC, rather than a "well, we're Apple, we don't require any upgrades to be epic, but don't even think about upgrading in 3 years, because this hardware will be obsolete lololololol, proprietary hardware ftw"
Point here: PC, you get hardware problems... and it costs you to fix it, yes. However... Mac, you get hardware problems, you're out $1k. The choice is obvious.
But you go ahead and enjoy.
And I was going to apologize for the tone of my posts, but... eh.
I've grown up and trained with PCs, and I find them infinitely more usable. I have had Macs before. A Performa series running OS 7.5, and I've used a G4 running OS 10.3. Both were unstable garbage. 10.3 was me giving it a 'second chance' since I had heard how godly they were. And it failed that second chance.
I can easily afford a Mac. But I'd prefer something that gives less money to Steve Jobs. Next time you look at an Apple product, I want you to think about how much money the parts cost. For the most part, they use parts that already exist, but have them made with proprietary connectors. The operating system is not immune to viruses, either. If you truly believe it is, you are foolish. So... overall, you have about $800 worth of parts and programs. That's going on the high end. Consider a $200 markup to make some money on the deal... and somehow, you're saying that they deserve the extra $1000? You're paying $1000 for the Apple name? Really? Whatever floats your boat.
And Steve Jobs, he doesn't really donate any money to these organizations that help fund disease research and the like, but Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer do. That just makes me feel bitter about where that money is probably going... right into the "Steve Jobs needs money to replace each body part as it dies" fund.
But yeah. I'm biased on operating systems. I know what's given me trouble, and what hasn't. The problems with Windows, I can overcome, but Apple's methods to resist viruses (yes, I'm admitting they are somewhat resistant) tend to make user interactions that much more difficult. I like an OS that I can hack into if need be. I'm sure you can do it with Mac OS, but I've learned my techniques in Windows.
And I actually like to pay for my software. Not saying I like giving up the money, but I do feel guilty for having anything I didn't pay for. ^^; And as far as that goes, the "what I get vs. cost" ratio on a Windows machine is more appropriate for me. That and I have two degrees in computer networking, so Windows is just the environment I'm more comfortable running in. (And not to mention most software for managing large networks is PC-only)
Also, it has been seen by me before that sometimes the USB ports are just not functional on startup sometimes. Usually due to a driver load failure. You may want to check the system properties "Device Manager" for it.
Control Panel > System, and there should be a tab within that window that has a "Device Manager" button in it. (Vista just has a link in the left panel in System)
Check to see if any devices report an error. (Red or yellow marks on the devices...) or if they are disabled (icon of an arrow pointing down over the device).
Another thing to check, is plug the mouse into different USB ports, or plug the mouse in before turning the PC on. Sometimes I don't have reaction from USB devices if they are inserted at the time the system loads drivers for equipped devices. (For instance, plugging something in during startup at the very moment the system is detecting input devices will actually sometimes prevent it from detecting that device at all for that time of power-on.)
Either way, I do recommend you make sure to have an antivirus installed. AVG Free or Avast! are the way to go. But only one antivirus. Supplement the capabilities with Spybot: Search and Destroy.
I do have an anti virus (one I actually shouldn't have >.> <.<) but it didn't find anything either..
All Device Manager showed me was that the new mouse was a "Unknown device", and updating the software wasn't possible, since it already had the latest version.
I tried putting it in two other ports, no effect
and I stopped using Spybot and AVG when i discovered an 'even better' one called Avira, which found a virus it couldn't heal or remove. After that my uncle gave me a better one (the one I actually shouldn't have >.> <.<)
