Did the "Video Games are bad" people, actually have a point?

"Modern Gaming is Dead" Well, that's not true... it's thriving, but honestly, I kinda hope it does actually die. I barely need games to entertain myself these days, and from the looks of things, it seems to be making everything worse.
Honestly, I am truly bored of the stupid anti-AAA crusade, it keeps going in circles and isn't even working. It's been like a decade now since the entire hate train on EA started, and guess what? They are still alive and thriving, because they hold a monopoly on sports games and all those games franchises you loved as a kid.
Bethesda bad because you can't do the thing and their games are repetitive and buggy? sure, tell me the EXACT same thing for the fucking thousandth time, oh wait, they released Oblivion remastered? Nvm Bethesda is off the hook again.
"We need to talk about how modern games are being released in unfinished and buggy states" Oh what's that? No man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 fixed everything a years later? Well, time to just ignore all of that cause the game is good now. We'll keep talking about how it's an issue, but not suggest anything to fix this.
NINTENDO IS THE WORST, because they copyright claim everything and made their stuff more expensive!!! Oh wait, Switch 2 is the fastest selling console for Nintendo? uhm... Guys, if we just keep quiet about it, maybe people will forget our dumbass grand standing boycott... Seriously, everyone wants to hate Nintendo, but I laugh at any 'Nintendo bad' video because no one has the fucking stones to commit, since they raised you better than your parents did.
And the fucking list goes on and on, I find it funny that all these channels are like, "Indie games will be the AAA killers", and then they talk about nothing besides how much they hate the new AAA games and never spotlight indie games, ever. Nope, those games are for us to use to spite AAA, gotta virtue signal about how you're on the "winning side" even though you haven't won shit. Guess they can't really do that with how many indie games let you choose your pronouns.
Also, genuine question. Once AAA dies, what's next? What the fuck are you gonna celebrate to, or do now? The cruelest joke about the AAA crusade is that it doesn't have an answer to the problems of the modern games industry, or an endgame, and seems to be completely self destructive, they whine about how AAA sucks yet they seem to actually LOVE their games, they reminisce about how gaming used to be so much better while parading all the former titles from AAA companies, they demand something new, but can't move away from brand recognition, they are so susceptible to marketing that I am not surprised if AAA is really taking so long to fall apart from their incompetence because the other side is too brainwashed to fight back, or if the subtle ragebait they are putting out is some genius marketing move because these chuds will literally not shut up about them.
I guess their answer is just play eastern games? But... that's just AAA not from around here, also, a lot of what I've seen from that market is like... Very similar to what we currently have? The only exception being that there's a hot woman, or questionably aged girl on the cover... hmm...
Oh yeah, remakes and remasters. stop saying 'our culture is eating ourselves' the only reason you don't like some remasters is because they aren't to your tastes, gamers fucking love remakes and remasters, they eat that shit up, and basically beg for them, because anything new or original is too scary for an addict.
All I'm getting from looking at the current gaming sphere is that the modern gamer is an overly entitled manchild who demands everything but will never be satisfied. People proud of being losers and parasites on society, they claim to hate politics in video games, yet they turned it into an over politicized sphere where they will always check if the game has the politics they disagree with and will hate it if it does, they want their childhoods back, so they whine, they bitch, they complain, they shit and piss their pants talking about how everything sucks, then sit in their feces and cross their arms waiting for mommy or anyone to fix their issues, because they can't take any action to do anything. And frankly, I am disgusted
'Gamers' are their own greatest propaganda against their hobby, if I'm going to eventually turn into a filthy loser in his 30s who spends 8 hours a day unemployed whining about my hobby which I don't enjoy and want fixed so badly but can't do anything bout it, then get me off the train. I want OUT, I'd rather do something actually productive with my life than become a fucking loser.
The only thing I've come away from all this is just how powerful marketing can be at controlling people who claim that it doesn't work on them, because it already has.
TL:DR: the anti AAA shit is cringe, has been going on for a decade now and will probably go nowhere, modern 'gamers' are hypocrites, and disgusting no life losers who keep whining about their hobby they don't even enjoy, but are so trapped in them they can't move on or do anything else.
Also, if you can prove me wrong, please do so.

The point of these anti-AAA Youtubers is raising awareness by calling out these big companies and you're doing no help by brushing it all off.
Many games are relying on powerful computers and frame generation to "make their games work" like with Monster Hunter Wilds, Stalker 2, and many other games (especially ones in Unreal Engine 5). Why optimize when you can brute force?
Fastest selling console doesn't mean good. People were going to buy it anyway and that's a problem. THE problem. We don't hold these companies accountable and they get away with everything they do. Price hikes, lack of quality control, and predatory practices like loot boxes, excessive subscriptions and battle passes, etc. In some cases such as Ubisoft and Blizzard, sexual assault and rape by CEOs and other employees with no action. World of Warcraft still going strong.
Even among the people who know about tese issues... continue to play the game because "game fun". (Like you said with Oblivion's Remaster. These people are hypocritical and won't actually STOP buying the games if it's to their interest).
How about the Hogwart's Legacy issue with JK Rowling saying she doesn't care about the controversy because she wipes away her tears with her royalty checks? Hogwarts Legacy had plenty of boycotts and outcry and it did work, but not enough. And guess what? Because people willingly (and a lot of unknowingly) supported it, it's getting a sequel where they are going to bastardize the actors from the movies who are also against JK Rowling.
It all comes down to people not knowing about all of these issues, or simply not caring because "video games are fun".
I could go on all day about multiple facets of the industry but you'd probably just call me a "a filthy loser in his 30s who spends 8 hours a day unemployed whining about my hobby".
I love video games and want them to be better, not broken, buggy, and almost unplayable. I don't want every video game to force me into practices that could rob me of hundreds of dollars. And I want companies to be held accountable. Which is why I've swapped to playing mostly indie titles that are cheaper and are just as fun.
I don't need Triple AAA garbage and I've stopped supporting most of these predatory companies because unlike other gamers, I have a spine.
My biggest issue with the Anti-AAA content is that, sure, you can spread all the awareness you want, but that has been going on for literal years, and nothing seems to be getting better, no one has a solution or alternative, and seems to be shouting angrily into the void, until AAA gives them something that doesn't offend their senses and they calm down for a bit. They don't want to commit to any significant change, and their claims of supporting indie devs feels completely hollow, or doesn't have enough energy. The people who genuinely want to make things better (making their own games, actually advocating against things like crunch or over the top graphics) get completely drowned out by a sea of morons who make 3 videos a day about how the new AAA game is bad and hog all the attention. They stagnate discussion and actively advocate for terrible actions like harassing game devs. In essence allowing AAA to get away with what they're currently doing with how caustic the biggest faces are.
They've already tried to make the "next Balatro" but by seeking to copy Balatro they miss the entire point of why a small game like Balatro BECAME the powerhouse it was. It wasn't made for profit or greed, it wasn't made in a board room. It was made out of passion (well, a guy wanting to make a game for his family and friends and decided to sell it later).
Yeah trying to raise awareness is yelling into the void a lot of the time, but one person at a time. At least people with Youtube channels can reach more people but even then, they scream about these practices, these people (CEOs), and not much changes. Triple AAA companies will fail and then blame others for why they failed and make the same mistakes over and over again without learning why they keep failing.
When you make games for profit, they turn out bad. It's really that simple. Making games is a form of entertainment, a medium for fun, not one to be used for profit. The movie industry isn't any better in that regard. A lot of safe Hollywood formulas, using safe actors, safe ideas... and people will go see movies whether they're promising, going to be bad (like Minecraft) and some people just watch movies KNOWING they'll be bad just to see if they're "so bad they're good". And that's how you get movie slop. You support these and CEOs only see profit and continue.
And the reason I like survival crafting (and MMOs) is because they can give me a lot of time out of them for the same amount of money. As much as I would love to be more experimental and play shorter games, once they're done I need a new game. At least larger scale games I can play for a few weeks. I don't want to pay $90 CAD (sometimes over $100) to play some Nintendo game for 2-8 hours and be done with it (because I beat it... or burned out).
In the end, we all gotta stop caring about what others say about something and inform ourselves. Differentiate between opinion and information.
Stupidly enough, the idea of "do your own research" has become something hijacked by the alt-right that twisted into nonsense to seed mistrust in any opinion that's dangerous for them.
Yet for things that are very individual to enioy, it really is the best thing to do :)
In the end just enjoy for your own sake, not because of someone else~
You should do your own research. Don't pre-order! Wait a day or two, read reviews (even if just Steam reviews). See what people love, but more importantly see what issues people are having. Is it super buggy? Low FPS? Crashes? There was a game that was very good but the only issue it was having was "the multiplayer is sobad it's unplayable" and that was the only issue. But that one issue brought the reviews down so much on the first day.
Knowing different kind of red flags helps, but not everyone can catch them. I don't want games to fail, and I don't want games to be the way they are, but frequently I'm left skipping out on games I wanted to play just because they wind up being a huge letdown and I'd rather save my money.
I've also wound up playing some pretty shit games and still having fun, but that doesn't also mean I'd recommend it. (Launch No Man's Sky at like 15 FPS for like 50 hours is my go-to example).
The other main camp is the one that wants to take a critical look at the industry, to raise awareness. From exploitative pricing, technical failures, workplace issues and in a few cases getting mixed in with real politics. Now to what aims do those people do it? Well that can depend. Some want to educate, then ultimately wash their hands off from the outcome and leave it to each consumer's personal choice. Some actually seek to promote movements, be they large scale or personal, that support smaller developers at the expense of some of those larger corporations.
Some are total hypocrits, some completely stick to their ethos and others also recognise that there's nothing wrong with a slice of cake from your favourite bakery every now and again. You might disagree on which bakery is the best but everyone has their own personal standards.
I don't know what you want to be proven wrong on, so I won't bother trying to guess. But I'd suggest continuing to seek out people who share interests with you rather than fixating on fights in a hobby that you like. Respect differences of opinion then avoid conflict if parties try to bring it up; and try your best to understand why someone has a difference of opinion. Otherwise you will just become like the people you're angry at except you're waving a blue flag rather than a red one.
i want all the video game companies to die, so that people will stop caring about the new mario, and start making a new mario. i dont want new companies either, i want individuals coming together and making something that speaks to them, not something marketable. video games shouldnt be a product, theyre supposed to be fun in whatever specific ways we want them to be for our own satisfaction. and we already have so many, theres no reason to demand more when we can make more. the alternative to triple-a is do-it-yourself. the people who made all those triple-a games arent going to die if the companies die. theyre just gonna take 20 years to make anything super realistic like horizon zero dawn or red dead redemption 2 because theyre going to have to get a different job and take it easy so they dont crunch themselves to death, literally. i can wait, and everyone should be able to wait. we have plenty of other things that need our attention.
speaking of that- demanding better politics in games isnt going to actually help the marginalized because its just going to be a corporate ad. indie is different, but we shouldnt be demanding anything from indie artists anyway. its fine to only buy from those you want to support, but people should be protesting and donating to those in need, like actual marginalized artists and game devs, not buying the "correct" titles. we shouldnt need to lean on companies' support to actually get the freedoms we need. we have to support each other.
i definitely think a lot of people are still clinging to the status quo while realizing it sucks. its sad, for sure, and its not a problem specific to gamers either. anyone still singing the praises of capitalism is either uninformed or willing to look past exploitation for convenience's sake.
Also, I didn't say I want better politics in games. It's nice that they're there, but I'm mostly just like "okay sure, more options is always cool", it may not be for me, but I know someone appreciates it, but yeah, support indie devs, it's their games and they can add whatever they want. (Also, I want it so that I can play as a muscular female or twink male, I hate that thing in games with custom character creators where fem bodied characters are always shorter and often highly attractive, lemme make my big girls dammit.)
but i mean valve is just a data deliverer with locks and keys so like. i feel like its feasible to keep stuff around so that good steam games arent lost to time. and when companies die they usually get sold, not just wiped off the face of the planet. i think it'll be fine, but someone on the inside would need to care, or someone who cares needs to get on the inside somehow, which i think is more likely and more feasible than most would believe.
also i dont think we need new hardware personally. and even if we did later on, im sure in this hypothetical there would be a new market for PC builders that focus on emulation to replace consoles
And that's fine. No need for me to get mad over products that weren't for me to begin with. I'm happy just playing the games that I like to play. I enjoy reading about new games in the smaller scene and poking my nose in to see what people are making.
It's possible to be critical of something without making it ones entire personality and losing focus on the things one actually cares about.
However there are plenty of people who game in addition to their other hobbies (like myself) and I do believe it's about finding the balance and not letting it consume your life. Most of all people shouldn't be playing games they hate but unfortunately some people are addicted it seems.
In terms of indie taking the.place of AAA it's slowly happening, you have Larian which used to be indie and now is a AA and AAA company, owlcat and devolver are other examples, but nothing in an industry with billions of dollars happens quickly. If there is a vacuum it will be filled by a rising AAA company.
End of the day, people be people. XD
I do need to ask though, ya doing alright mate? This feels like it's outta nowhere and reactionary to something tipping ya over the edge of frustration.
Not to mention, the attitudes of a lot of modern 'gamers' (the complainers) seems to me like they don't really have much of a future, they feel completely trapped in their hobby and are unable to move away from it, they feel like people who just want their childhoods back so badly, but aren't aware that they cannot reacquire it, and in their desperation to do so are actively hurting themselves and others.
Not to mention, even with all the whining and complaining, nothing seems to really be working, I'd support their cause but they are just beyond insufferable, using the exact same arguments (sometimes worse) from years ago, and making no changes, I know what these people want, they want their nostalgia back, but they cannot have it, even if they are given EXACTLY what they want, all of their negative experiences will just sour any positive feelings they have, and will never be satisfied.
For me personally, I believe it might be time for me to move on.
If I may throw my 2 cents into the ring, I went through something similar back in the day that the "enshiittening" started and gamers first started talks about the studios and yada-yada. I was genuinely angry at both the gamers and the studios and a lot of my interest fell away. I reduced my gaming time a lot, but every so often a spark would hit. Disco Elysium, Helldivers 2, It takes two, Divinity: Original sin, Hellsinger, Deep Rock Galactic, DMC 5, Burnout Paradise, Prey and way, way too many comfort games to count. I'd disconnect from the big games and big studios and the big discussions and just kinda check around for random stuff. Hell I've recently gotten into stuff like power wash simulator, because it's just a nice comfy time that I can destress with. And something like Paradigm or West of Loathing is such a bizzare and effortlessly silly game that I can't help but chuckle along to the madness. Oh god and I cant forget to mention the Yakuza games, holy heck do those have some of the best drama and best random BS in them, they're a tonal whiplash made code.
So TL;DR, disconnect from the social media and reddit discussions about the gaming landscape and just go around playing some niche things. Or heck, pivot to a different time-killer until the itch to game hits again. For other time killers, can highly recomment music, walking or lego/non-lego brand bricks. Find yer own fun in the world, don't let the loud gremlins bring ya down. If ya want some gaming recommendation some day when ya feel like it, yer free to note me for a suggestion or just some chat.
As for the anti-AAA thing, I honestly don't care either way. I don't really buy from AAA companies much anymore (not because I dislike them or anything, I'm just disinterested), and I do plan on getting a Switch (because I really want to play Breath of The Wild 1&2 and Smash Ultimate). Outside of that, I mostly buy the old stuff anyway, outside of HOI4 and other Paradox titles (though even then I'm not really doing that much anymore, mostly due to more DLCs requiring more processing power).
I won't act as if I like modern monetisation models, but they're here to stay as long as they keep making money - which they will. If I don't like a game, I won't buy it, simple as. I won't tell others not to buy it because it's ultimately their money.
As for the politics thing, I can't be bothered to keep up with it. I don't care if a game is 'woke' or 'anti-woke' or whatever, it's a game, so if it's fun I'll try it. Gaming is meant to be an escape from IRL politics, right? right? It just feels strange to me.
I do like some indie games, but they're not all good (need I remind people that Digital Homicide is an indie company, as is Gilson B. Pontes?). No one genre of game is all good and no genre is all bad, you'll get a bit of both.
I love the games they put out, but I dislike the company. I talked with a friend of mine and they brought a good point with me. Nintendo (unfortunately) did this to themselves. Part of this backlash is due to what they have been doing for the past few years.
I just think pricing Mario Kart World and SOME switch 2 games at 80 dollars was the straw that broke the camels back. Before that, Nintendo did the following.
- Show that they don't care about video game preservation.
- Go after Palworld which MAY or MAY not be justified as there are now rumors that Pocketpair stole code from Scarlet/Violet.
- Charging an arm and a leg for their Nintendo Switch online service, especially if you want to play N64/Gamecube/GBA/Genesis games.
I could go on, but we would be here all day. My point is, all of this built to the point to where even the biggest fans turned against the company.
With that, I agree with you on some parts. Its really annoying listening to music on Youtube and seeing all these videos with clickbait thumbnails that talk about how Nintendo Switch 2 failed or how Mario Kart World is a bad game.
Some of them are even so nit picky that it would make the Sonic fandom from back in the day point fingers and laugh.
Don't believe me? There is a video that critiques Toad Drivers in Mario Kart World THAT'S FOURTEEN MINUTES LONG and titled "Where are the NPCs in Mario Kart World going?"
Smh.
Don't even get me started on clowns like Real Life Fake Wizard who is resorting to insulting people who brought the Nintendo Switch 2, calling people who brought it, neck-beards.
I don't blame anyone new to gaming who looks at this and walks away to do something else like watching paint dry.
As for the AAA industry overall, I'm just hoping that seeing them flounder while Indie makes it big will make them reconsider how they go about making games and just make BETTER games. Expedition 33 for example proves there is still an appetite for turn based RPG games which AAA denied. AAA said live service games were the future and single player games were antiques of the past, yet Jedi Fallen Order turned out to be a massive success in spite of their claims. I just want to guide the AAA industry back towards making games that gamers enjoy, not ones that is focused on stuffing a corpse of a game with microtransactions until it looks like an overstuffed Nurgling.
I ask because I know there are these sentiments you describe, I know that the vast majority of the time they are impotent and meaningless (not all of them, but yeah, a lot are just complaining for complaining's sake) and so I don't engage with it. Don't watch those channels/videos, don't read those threads, don't follow those subreddits or blue sky accounts or whatever.
And you know what? In my eyes, the gaming world is thriving. We get loads of amazing titles for all kinds of people, from the fairly large AA games like Expedition 33 and Hi-fi Rush, and smash hits like Balatro to throw out a few names you've probably heard before, but there are loads of other gems that fly more under the radar like Tactical Breach Wizards, Tempest Rising, and Pacific Drive (a couple of years old now) and that's just the ones I've personally played. If you're willing to look a few years back there's everything from Neon White, Chants of Sennar, Deep Rock Galactic, and Return of The Obra Dinn, Outer Wilds, NEBULOUS: Fleet Command, ROUNDS, and SYNTHETIK, to name a couple of titles in all caps.
I'm missing a ton, just in recalling these I've reminded myself of other recent/recent-ish games I haven't played like Voices of The Void, Mouthwashing, and Blue Prince.
And this is all still without mentioning older games that are still receiving work and attention from either the devs or the community, like the upcoming Odyssey expansion and 1.6 update for Rimworld.
If you're looking for healthier gaming content creators, I'd recommend looking into (all YT channels):
- Game Maker's Toolkit
- Adam Millard, Architect of Games
- Semi Ramblomatic
- Iron Pineapple's Steam Dumpsterdiving / "I played X Souls-Like games you've never heard of" (increasingly less souls-like as the series has progressed)
- Jacob Geller
- Superdude
I can find and list more if you'd like, since I'm for sure forgetting some big names.
The first two are game design videos, Semi Ramblomatic is pretty varied but generally has a look at gaming trends from the perspective of a very experienced game reviewer, Iron Pineapple throws a spotlight on some *truly* strange games sometimes, Jacob Geller and Superdude both make video essays linking games themes to other games and media and real world events.
And honestly, most of the games these channels talk about aren't even really ones i'd be interested in playing myself, but that doesn't stop me from being interested in their messages or how they connect to other works, be it through similar or different mechanics and systems, or themes and narrative tone.
Watching these channels, I find it hard to identify gamers as hypocrites or disgusting no-life losers. Do those kinds of people exist in this hobby? sure, 100%. But every hobby has those, from shitty assholes in the gym to football hooligans who go to matches to fight and break stuff.
Nowhere is safe from assholes if you don't make an effort to filter them out of the spaces you live in. Gaming is *far* from unique in this, just look at Marvel/Disney fans and how they view the movie industry.
Not only that, titles I actually vibe with and dig haven't been coming out. Last big title I got was Cyberpunk during the initial launch. It was buggy and harder then hell to play on the ps4, but behind the bugs, the crashes, I could see the awesome combat system and great story. Same ordeal is happening again but with an indie game: Tainted Grail.
Long story short I pretty much dont care to listen to all the hate on games I want to play. Its my money, my time, and if the game is an interesting one, I'll dig it. In the end for the launch bugs, all I can do is hope the dev team fix it for future players to enjoy the moments I had with the title.
Side note, be wishful that companies try to release a solid day one game, if they fail that then pray they own up their mistake and fix it like CD Red did. Best to save the abundant hate for companies that abandon a title and refuse to clean up their mess.
Theres large companies I don't hate, and theres small studios i don't like. But what i respect among all else is just that someone cared and put a bit of themselves and their passion into the work. Thats... still true with many of the big games. I Really don't like nintendo for a variety of reasons (The pricing stuff is very... tame in my eyes compared to other things.) And i haven't spent a dime on them in over a decade, but i still respect some of the stuff they make, sense its not the developers I hate, its the company and at the end of the day, Theres still a ton of passionate artists, musicians, designers, and all else at work.
I don't really claim Triple AAA is the death of video games or that the past is better or anything like that. I just view it as its constantly evolving, like different art movements and eras. People were expressing different varied ideas artistically back in the days of parsers and 16 bit colors. And they still do now. Triple AAA probably won't ever die outright, as there will always be flow in. but well, the more accessible and more people making games, thats the best that can be done for the medium. Culture never really is dead, or needs to be revived, it just changes, as people age and new people enter the scene. Maybe I have a different perspective on it then others because of my age? (early 20's) With me having started working with teams on Indie games sense i was 14.
They don't see logic or want to believe logic. They believe whatever they want to believe.
"The Switch 2 will never sell. No one will buy that expensive console."
-3 weeks later. Switch 2 sales his 3 million worldwide.
They dont know prices? Remember the PS5 Pro?
Remember Dragon's Dogma 2's price?
Why isn't the new Donkey Kong game $80?
They don't care. They are fuel with unnecessary hatred because a company did something that really isn't even a big deal and doesn't effect their life.
"B-but they got a guy sent to jail for emulation."
Of course he's in jail, dumbass, he was selling roms which is a government law to not pirate Any source of media!
I'll be honest. Gamers have started to become stupider. I want a Video gane crash to happen so they would shut up and realize just how fortunate we are they we even get people to develop video games to begin with.
Companies aren't our friends. They are a group of people who's jobs are to make video games that we enjoy, so they get a paycheck.
Bethesda and their quality gets me to grind my gears. If other companies can work to make sure their games are not buggy, or even make patches dedicated to fixing them, why can't Bethesda? This is 2025, its inexcusable.
EA, I personally don't like their marketing. I think its gross and it shames me when other companies use their business strategy. If you guy a game for full price, it should have All the teams, no loot-box gambling.
Square-Enix, Konami, Activision, I also have bitterness too because they don't respect their players or their own employees.
Despite that and everything that happened at Activision-Blizzard, I still play World of Warcraft. Because its fun! Isn't that what games are suppose to be? Not a cultural war with others?
