Going Linux!
3 months ago
And finally, after so many years, I`m going Linux.
Microsoft always have been a hateful experience but I considered it a necessary evil, and as we`ve been losing more and more features and customization (nowdays you can`t even move your taskbar), I`ve come to the crossroad.
After some research, I decided to go with Kubuntu, and I`ve got to tell, it`s been a very smooth experience. I haven`t encountered any issues so for with anything I`ve used before, including gaming. I could run smoothly every single thing I tested so far.
As I came from MS-Dos, I had no problems with the console, but you nearly don`t need to use it.
I recommend the experience! If you want to just try out, you can install it on a usb flashdrive without installing it. Or you can do like me and dual boot your Pc.
My only doubt now is if I`ll keep going with Kubuntu, or if I`ll migrate to Ubuntu itself or Pop!_OS
When I tried it 10 years ago, it was a totally different experience, and now I believe it`s mature!
Give it a chance!

I'm more of a Mint or Zorin person, myself! Though my main gaming rig still runs Windows 10 😩
Are you nvidia users?
Mint is one of the distros in my "give it a try" list but I didn't take a look on how cinnamon handles my gpu.
KDE goes well with my rtx-3060, but sometimes I struggle a bit finding support and guides
Im tempted to run a dual-boot mode to switch between Windows (for gaming) and Linux for all else.
The problem with Nvidia is much the same as Windows in that they only support their GPUs for so long before they stop issuing drivers. Just means that for older PCs, you eventually might have to run older kernels to keep with the last working Nvidia drivers, but... we're talking pretty far back there. I have a 2012 system with the RTX 600 series, and a 2017 system with the RTX 900 series that fall into that category now.
Nvidia is one of the few hold-outs who don't want to open-source their GPUs and drivers. If you use Intel or AMD GPUs, you never have any concerns on that front. But again, the "concern" is pretty minor and only starts coming into play after quite a few years, and by then, just like with Windows, you're dealing with a sort of "stuck in time" system in anyway.
I already use Linux Mint on my DIY Server, and apart from a handful of games (that I sadly play an awful lot still), everything works nicely.
That's what I'm doing, and making a slow transition, with two systems, but the intention is ditching windows in the long run for sure
Just curious. I have two computers myself, the newer/more powerful one running Windows for games, and then I VNC into Linux for most of my "internet" stuff including social stuff like Discord/Telegram/mucks, a web browser for furry stuff, etcetc.
And I've been successful in playing non-steam games via steam with proton as well!
Jumped ship from windows several years ago and now happily in the "I run Arch btw" crowd, haha.
Linux isn't that hard even advanced stuff once the mindset adjusts away from how things work in windows.
Just tentative of pushing a current PC to use it.
I remember one could run virtual machines off it. So one could still access Windows features by running it as a virtual machine.
Imagine if Valve actually released a fully functional Steam OS made to compete with Windows.
I ran into a few minor issues here and there solved by some tinkering or choosing the right app (Heroic launcher have some access to GoG cloud storage, Lutris don't) for the task. For art and non-gaming tasks, I used open SW like Firefox, VSCode, LibreOffice, Gimp, Krita and Inkscape anyway, so no change in this area...
But Proton is truly mindblowing...
First, watch some videos about the best distro for your purposes ( games, development tools, general use, etc)
Then, watch some videos about how difficult each distro is to master;
Then, cross reference both, what you want versus your own skills (and/or patience);
And finally, there's no need for free diving: Make a dual boot, or try some different distros from a usb-flashdrive, there are ways to play safe without breaking your pc and getting totally frustrated with the data loss. If you do a little bit each day, you won't perceive the downtime, that's what I'm doing.
Last: I don't know if I'm like most people, but I actually have fun tinkering and scraping forums to customize a little ridiculous thing that was bothering me. There are distros that don't demand that, but if you're this kind of person you'll take the most of the freedom you'll acquire getting away from MS/MacOs
The fact Steam had to nutshot the Linux crowd to actually do things that regular schmoes have wanted for a long time amuses me (Been complaining that they needed to make it easier for newbies)
