Working on NES game project
General
So, I finally posted some of my first materials for a big NES project I started few months ago in May 2025. It was nothing but just a random thought to draw fat Zed pixel art at first which quickly turned into a big NES game project.
As I already mentioned in a fat Zed pixel art description, I started thinking about what kind of game could it be right after I made it look like a faux game scene. I thought it would be cool to see it as a big action platformer but since Zed turns simply immobile by the end it's probably not him who's gonna be the main character to control. Obviously it had to be Mark instead which icon I added in a dialogue box of this first artwork.
The idea for the game story I came up with is simple and silly, as silly as a premise of most NES games which often was nothing but just a very vague excuse for all the random absurd stuff going on in a game. Something like "Zed and Mark were watching news on TV and suddenly saw a man who won lots of money for breaking a world record and becoming the fattest man on Earth. Fueled by his competitive spirit and greed for money, Zed decided that he'll do anything to become twice as fat the guy from TV to get rich and famous and of course it meant that Mark has to help him and do all the dirty job again."
With story like that, Mark is supposed to be main playable character in a platformer game where you select one of the levels, each one is food related in its own way, beat the boss, get some greasy high calorie food related treasure, similar to NES Duck Tales where you select levels and hunt for treasures as well, and after each level you get a cutscene showing Zed growing fatter and fatter with some mildly suggestive dialogue to spice it up.
I'm not going to make it overly horny though. Sexual games tend to use complex mechanics to implement sexual interactions as a part of the gameplay and a lot of excessive visuals done just for show which is absolutely normal for this genre of course but it's hard to do the same on NES considering how limited was the memory of these games. So I'm making it more like an innocent platformer where all the spiciness is concentrated mainly in the cutscenes and a bit in boss designs.
I worked on this project a lot and reached a very big progress, not only in drawing stuff but also digging deeper and deeper into studying NES specifications. My knowledge is still not enough to make a game fully on my own (I mean REAL NES game which can be done only by coding, no modern game engine can handle it) but more than enough already to be a really good game designer for somebody who knows how to program an NES game in Assembly 6502 language, so my ambitions soared pretty high. Finding a person who can help me to do all the coding is my only obstacle right now but I think it's not an impossible task. For now I'll just keep posting some of my game materials from time to time.
Those who follow my pixel workings for a long time might ask "Well, you already started a game project with Volk, is it abandoned now?"
Well, it's very embarrassing to admit but it's definitely canned for now but I don't think it's canceled forever. This project was just a bit unfortunate to be started in a period when I didn't know yet how to work with hardware-authentic pixel art styles and ended up making this project in a general faux-retro style which doesn't represent any particular real old system. Later I started getting better at understanding graphical limitations of different systems and grew very nerdy about it, I realized that making 100% authentic retro art which you can launch on an actual system makes me way more excited than free-style pixel art that only attempts to look retro. I still love the unique style of my Volk project and still want to finish it one day but it just got a bit overshadowed by my newer ideas made when I became more fully formed as a pixel artist.
Also, no matter how much I love Volk as an R34 artist he is still not my personal character so anything I'll make with him is never 100% my own thing. Not that it really bothers me, again, since I'm an R34 artist, but still having something of my own gives me a special kind of thrill and when I made myself my first OCs they got a special place in my heart, so making a game about them feels especially exciting.
I hope that my attention span issues and my bad habit of dropping things halfway without finishing won't stop me this time because this time it's way more serious and I feel more determined to finish everything. NES games hold very special place in my heart as a part of my childhood nostalgia and I'm a big fan of physical media so it's very exciting to think about making a game that can be actually run on a real console just like the other games I enjoyed as a kid.
