After getting some helpful critique, I spent these last few months reviewing my commission options. Over the years, I have been experimenting with different methods. It's a natural part of artistic growth, and it's been a fun creative journey! However, as I was seeking advice for my work flow and business management, an area of improvement was brought to light. My previous pricing model had a few "Ranges", and that resulted in being unclear both for the commissioner, and myself.
It was a little difficult to anticipate what "style" and level of finish one would get for what price, since there were too many varied examples for each range. This originated from my aforementioned experimentation with how I draw, how long it takes, and trying to find a price that fairly compensates my time spent. While none of my customers mentioned this or seemed bothered, I was glad that I took the time to ask around and get some suggestions.
Over the past few years, we observed that I gravitated towards 4 methods/levels of finish. In light of this, I grabbed the pictures I felt best represented those methods, and created clearly defined pricing options around them. This not only gives the commissioner more confidence in knowing what to expect, but it does the exact same thing for me! This gives me a clearly defined "Start" and "Finish" line to refer back to, allowing me to proceed with more confidence in my process. It also helps prevent over working myself, which was a reoccurring theme that was only ever my own fault.
As always, thank you guys for joining me in my journey as a freelance artist. I've been blessed with very patient, kind, and understanding commissioners throughout most of my career and that's been the most powerful outside motivator to keep at it. My internal motivator is a desire to bring creatures and worlds to life that has yet to diminish, and I will stoke it as much as I can to see it never does!
