So, about Digimon Story: Time Stranger....
As some may have noticed, I am a Digimon fan. Shocker. So of course, I was going to get this. I've generally liked all of Digimon's major releases and it's nice to see Digimon has now been given it's first Story game out of 7 Story games to be given a legitimate console launch, and the second in recent years, after Survive. What even was the last home console Digimon game... Rumble All-Stars on PS3? I dunno.
Anywho, the jist of it is that... yes, it's a really solid RPG. Like, really snappy, too. A lot of the sidequests don't really waste your time (although the player is obsolutely backloaded with sidequests before the final boss), the pacing is pretty snappy, and despite what some say, the game isn't just Cyber Sleuth given a new skin.
Do I think TS is 100% an improvement over CS? Not at all. But I would put this game on the same boat as Armored Core 6 or Guilty Gear Strive; games meant to be more welcoming to new fans, although unlike AC6 or GG4, Time Stranger didn't have to lose so much of itself in the process. I mean, I like Armored Core 6, but boy did it lose a lot of what Verdict Day had.
I do think the farm was a downgrade from CS/HM, though. The only improvement as far as the farm goes is that you can spend money to finish a training session early. I know a lot of people celebrated being able to digivolve outside the Theater, but admittedly, I didn't even know people had issue with using the lab for digivolving in CS/HM until a couple months ago. That said, with so many added digimon into HM (although some were removed) It's good that digivolution was reworked to be, in the best circumstances, faster.
I also still prefer CS's final boss to TS's.
Anyway, good game. I'd recommend it. Final party was Vikemon, Lilithmon, and GranLocomon, with MetalSeadramon, Kentarosmon, and Gundramon on reserve. That said, this was the team I just happened to land on, and I wasn't going to concentrate on a "choice team" for most of the game, as I was more interested in seeing what the game offered.
Lilithmon was going to be on my team, though. If I wasn't so focused on type balance I'd throw Mervamon in. Also, Mervamon is in the game.
