Thoughts on base art??
Yooo, I probably should have written a journal about bases before making a couple ^ ^; nevertheless, lets move on!
So like, do people actually use/ enjoy bases? (Forgive me, but I don't really get it tbh…plus I’m not really the target audience for them) What is it that you like about them? What makes you think a base is good/bad? F2U vs P2U (what makes one worth buying in the first place)?
Personal notes:
I hope to make a base or 2 a month… Might take some species suggestions, I def wanna do an anthro raptor pack >:3
One of the reasons I'd like to continue making them is because they force me to practice my line art and I don't have to worry about rendering it out later. I don't think my current line art is bad, but ironically when drawing it’s my least favorite part to do cause I feel like it takes forever, and kinda loses that sketchy flow. Idk maybe it’s an endurance problem for me.
And the other reason is well, money ^ ^; buuut I don't really like to push my patreon or ko-fi since they feel like I’m doing ads, and like am I really offering anything worthwhile? Idk, maybe I'm just getting too inside my own head about it lol. But I'm out here trying, so there's that at least XD

In other news, I’m currently working on Ponya’s ref sheet… (1 of 3) :’3 someone end my suffering these take so long and I still need to do my sona lmao

FA+

Following that, I decided to make my ($5) p2u bases easy to complete; I designed them with 1 frame of character and ready animated layers around it. They've had minimal popularity, tending to only get a couple sales at times of posting on DA. When I moved off DA, I put them onto Patreon. There have been only 2 Patreon sales of p2u bases so far.
Hoping to salvage the whole thing, I did the following:
Firstly, I made them all downloadable to Patreon supporters $10+. While it's a pretty good deal, none of my Patreon supporters actually joined for them, to my awareness.
Secondly, I gave them a YCH option ($25) that I'd complete myself. Despite being the most expensive option, it had more interest, since I did sell 3 slots on one of 'em. Not much, but still a surprising result.
.. So these are my adventures with a pretty specific style of p2u base that I haven't seen others attempt. Certainly not like the ones I've seen you post just now. I think those kinds of ones, that you can make a refsheet with, seem to be more useful, since some people want characters but don't have lining skills/money.
Perhaps the best thing that can be taken away from the above is that the YCH option might be worth considering to appeal to a different category of customers (ie. ones that like the base but don't want to edit it).
Whatever options you choose to offer, though.. it'll be interesting to see how this run goes!
I remember seeing ur YCH animations, those were so cool! especially the dragon ones, and the one where the character looks up with glowing eyes! I can't say that I’ve seen others offer animation like that either nor base animations.
I think animation bases are pretty neat though, the problem I see is it still requires a lot of work for someone not accustomed to animation, I remember my first animation project and man lowkey felt overwhelming due to how many frames and not knowing where all the tools are, ah man, I even remember wishing for auto coloring at one point XD.
But perhaps I’ll take a stab at run cycle bases
I’ve tried YCH in the past, but I don't think my skills were really there yet since I’d only get a few sales, I’ll have to think about trying again. But I've been mostly looking at lots of base packs and I think the customization aspect of different parts is pretty neat to play with!
Thanks for sharing ur stories with P2U, ur animations are very unique! im always happy to see more of them o3o
Once I mentioned P2U bases alongside the YCH ones on an ad I ran on FA, but the ad still liked to the YCH's, so maybe that's why those got more attention. I wonder what would happen if I ran an ad solely dedicated to the P2U stuff..
I recall there was an animator out there who mostly did 2d character animated p2u! I forget what their name was but they seemed quite successful.. it's definitely about getting that right balance between coolness and feasibility, I think.
Yea though man, do what makes sense for you! We all have different goals, interests, audience, etc. ..
And yeah, there probably is a bit of a pride thing when it comes to designing a character from scratch.
