a CR 11 creature and 20-25 CR2 creatures... I would say try talking to the orb if it is a lesser gibbering orb, otherwise try finding a way out of the room if you can.

We are currently mid combat for next session, The Orb attacked as soon as it started as it was first in turn order. No option to talk to it ... didn't even know that that could have BEEN an option ... But that doesn't really answer the the Question. Also CR 11 ? the info I saw said the Orb is a CR 30, and considering it hit the Cleric for half their HP in the first attack on a low roll and then Saved against an attack with a 26 Con Save... that doesn't sound to me like a CR 11, unless I'm not understanding this CR system.

the lesser Gibbering orb is a CR11, if it just says gibbering orb then yeah, that is a CR30... this is a Run like fuck type deal and if the DM is not giving you a way to run, either they are trying to kill the party or there is a story reason why something so dangerous is there...

before session next ask the DM above table what the plan is, because I asked my dm and they just the mouthers is an absurdly deadly encounter, with the Orb it is a Rocks fall encounter.

Sounds like your DM either doesn't know how to balance an encounter (I had similar, where 4 level 1's were pitted against a Quetzalcoatlus), they're lying, or they've overestimated your confidence in your characters.

Back up so you can't be flanked, buff each other, keep the healer alive so they can do their job, and pray.

It's a little funny, but.... No, I don't think that that is necessary appropriate. You ought to consider your escape plans, or treat this as a puzzle, not a combat. Not every encounter is meant to be won. Or even fought. He could be trying to test y'all's ability to think on your feet or to be resourceful and perceptive in the face of a crisis. Level becomes less important than cleverness in these situations.

Really depends how much of a rule stickler the dm is. Level can mean ass when you come up with something super contrived that.. in the context of the game beats the bad guy and if they're a good enough dm they'll be able to weave it into the story so stats don't really matter as long as you're playing the character but that really depends on how malleable the dm is being.
