New "Modern Retro" layout kinda missing the point entirely.

There's no announcement post about it, and maybe it's just being advertised to classic layout users in silence(?), but it's kinda missing the points entirely why classic is pleasant to use XD
1. There's no light variant, sure dark theme is cooler, but light tells me I'm logged in and text is easier to read.
2. Font sizes are gigantic on the new version, especially titles but also all text.
3. The site layout doesn't stretch to the edges, that's just bothersome for pages intended to list a lot of stuff (like submissions).
4. Lots of small details that overall make it less pleasant to use, like some elements are just too large / not compact enough.
Kinda overall sucks that everything always needs to be changed in our current times, which usually means something becomes worse than before. I'm just tired of it.

FA+

I should probably look into writing my own browser extension for this, actually, to make it really easy to customize that last part...
And just to head it off: there's reasons to and not to use literally every browser out there. I have my reasons for using Safari for some things, Chrome for others, etc. and I'm not going to change my browser just because FA's UI themes are designed by a link-hating nitwit.
If I understand correctly, I would use an extension like that.
I've used it on all the Fandom wiki sites to remove those absolutely horrendous videos that block way too much of the page by default, as another example.
This all looks very neat, I'll see if I can find uses for it.
If they don't add the features they outlined since this journal by the time I find time for it, I might try to find/write some CSS to make it like what I want (Haven't done that in decade+).
Good shout on the Fandom websites!
Thanks for the info!!
I got the feeling this could have been done better...
Me-thinks this is a way to get people to switch to the Modern Template with less hassle. Modern Template, Retro Theme == Classic Template, or, so they are trying to replicate it as close as possible.
I will try this layout, and hopefully there will be corrections. But as long as I can switch back...
FLUFFING
THIS
I accidentally clicked on it when it was just a line under the banner and it updated.
To be honest, to me it doesn't look much different from the "modern" layout, and it irks me to no end.
And to add up, I use the light version of the classic layout, and the "retro" in only the dark color doesn't add any better feelings.
They says there are some new features in new themes but... I never feel I missed something in Classic. Also I hate dark themes. This is one more reason to use Classic.
I'm very conservative and the only way to switch me to new themes is throw out old (oops, hope I didn't give them the bad advice).

I noticed on uBlock I can just hit the lightning bolt icon and click the notice to go away XDDD
"New and improved! ... to the point of dysfunction."
Really gives the connotation that it wasn't broken and nobody asked for the updates but they still invented a problem to 'fix' anyway.
Now, I hope they don't do like Deviantart where everybody was forced to use the new system which consumed alot more resources (back then I had a Phenom II X3 cores overclocked at 4 ghz and just browsing on deviantart used 90% of the processor resources)
I really prefer this old one cuz of the gallery feature under images and the overall look though yeah
I tried if for a little bit, but yeah - I personally enjoy using the classic one. I like having everything ordered and equally spaced instead of slapped into where fits like some free form tetris.
I might end up being one of the last hold outs on the classic theme in its original form... >.>
For all the comments I see of people not liking it, I don't believe the numbers. I'm not saying staff is being untruthful, mind you. But I seriously don't believe only 6% use Classic.
Plus on mobile it will not show me the mini gallery under submissions like Classic, it's just nonexistent; and people's journal lists, so any journal older than 25 is just...gone, essentially. Plus comments in journals get randomly large or small text. It's just a beta, to me, unfinished and buggy.
I will not be switching to it willingly. I will stay Classic until the end.
You left some good feedback in the announcement post. Unfortunately it seems the admins have made up their minds.
I don't want the last place on the internet I like to actually write/read/look at things to go away, even though it probably will, but it's worth trying no matter how desperate it is.
Going to this page to reply, I get the following stats at the bottom:
Page generated in 0.026 seconds [ 36.4% PHP, 63.6% SQL ] (29 queries)
Server Local Time: Dec 13, 2025 01:36 PM
As someone who has experienced dial-up internet, that's fast. I don't need it to go any faster.
I don't get why it would be so hard to make the classic frontend work on the modern backend if they need to push a page load optimization so much.
"But we need our side bars!" Classic works without side bars without issue. It seems less a must to me than a "we want this and we'll get it one way or another" to me. What's the added benefit of side bars?
Also, I assure you that your frustrations in this journal are still more constructive than many complaints I come across on FA! That’s why I suggested the news post 💜
Is it because of surrounding infrastructure?
