You're not wrong. What's worse, IMHO, is when the tail has genitalia on it. IE: I've seen the anus drawn in the underside of the tail itself...

true, seen that too. and where the anus is drawn way to low for both humanoid anthros or feral.

I always attributed it to a change in 'evolution', the tail moving up slightly to compensate for walking upright and able to provide a stabilizing balance while walking, thus the tail bone might shift up a little higher. It's as good a reason as any for most anatomical questions.

If that doesn't help, then a wizard did it.

Humans have a tail bone, if we had a tail, it would be in the same location as most mammals have them, at the end of our spinal section, which is directly above the anal opening in most all (land) quadruped or bepedal mammals.

Some Zelda characters have their tails on the back of their heads, theyre so high up.

I've noticed that too, where sometimes the tail comes out at that spot in the lower back you throw out when picking up something too heavy. You're right, the tail is the extension of the spine and would come out where the human tailbone is right at the top of the butt crack and in line with the spine. When it's sticking out higher up and horizontally, it may be just the artist not paying attention to the detail and/or not being really familiar with how the anatomy is or should be.

Similarly, I've seen artwork where the sheath or penis is higher up on the abdomen, almost where the navel would be. It doesn't look quite right! Funny how we prefer such realism in our artwork of fictional characters, but those details are important.

I used to get nagged that people could not see their tails by a few... I mean it did not matter that the characters has little tails, deers, rabbits, bears, people wanted to see the tail.. while looking at a 45° shot.. where the tail and the bottom would be hidden from view...

I seen a fursuit once where the tail was litterally atached at the upper Lumbar (L1) vertabrae location, and looked so bad & wrong, like a growth out of their lower back.

Really boils down to lazy anatomy where others just like it that way so...artistic liberty to break a rule but in my opinion its mostly just not really paying attention to anatomy.
