Seriously, this journal will have massive spoilers. If you haven’t seen the film in theaters yet, I REALLY suggest you avoid reading the rest of this.
I mean it. It’s all spoilers.
Go watch the film. Now.
Got it? Good.
Overall, I thought it was good. Despite my gripes with the plot, it’s still a good movie worth the movie ticket, and I definitely still wanna see Zootopia 3 someday. Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps are still amazing and memorable characters, the city itself is vibrant and alive, the animation is stellar as always, and I may watch this movie again when it goes to DVD or streaming. The whole production team behind this movie deserves all the love they get.
Here’s my biggest problem with Zootopia 2: I didn’t like that they made Pawbert a surprise twist villain. Frozen and (you can argue that) the first Zootopia movie could get away with it a decade ago, but I expected better from Disney by now. The animators made Pawbert way too well-designed and likable as a character to suddenly have him be a murderous psychopath. He’s almost unrecognizable from the lynx we’re introduced, and maybe I would’ve liked it better if we got to see this darker side of him in small moments earlier in the film. I get it that he kinda served as a dark smoky reflection of Judy a bit, but I’ve seen this kinda thing done better done in other films, including the first Zootopia with Deputy Mayor Bellweather, to an extent. Honestly, I felt it was completely wasted and unnecessary for Pawbert and the plot overall, especially because I suspected his villainy even before the movie came out.
That’s just my opinion though. If you loved this movie just as much, or even better than the first film, that’s great! Don’t let anyone else tell you to think over-wise. I just feel like this could’ve been more complex of a sequel like DreamWorks did with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
On its own, Zootopia 2 is a good furry movie with fantastic animation, excellent voice acting, memorable characters and a setting all of us in this fandom imagine ourselves in. I seriously hope that we get a Zootopia 3 in the future with the same passionate animation team at Disney.

Overall, I loved that movie and I really wanna see it again, my joy of it extending far beyond my critiques.
I feel like the Pawbert reveal landed the same way and was almost reminiscent of that initial "wait, I didn't just help a kid get an elephant sized lollypop?" It was a punishment for naively trusting like she had in that first film and focusing only on helping rather than the situational context, namely the deadly crime family. It definitely shocked me just as much as the "betrayal" in the first film. I'll agree surprise twists are a formula, but there's always been a bit of "reality" injected into these films and reality is messy with Pawbert working with them for his own gains which didn't feel forced to me at all.
All in all I had a good time with this film, just let myself go along for the adventure and the drama and everything in between.
