Massive update, please read. 8th journal
This is my head.
I didn't expect to update my journal so soon again, but I have several big news on the home front. Some good, some potentially not so good. It's going to be a long update so bare with me. I'll start with the good.
As some of you know, I recently bought a very inexpensive 6x8 graphics tablet about a month ago. I'm pretty satisfied with it so far. The only problem it has is with Open Canvas 1.1 (OC), but I heard those kinda of problem are common with OC itself. So it's not directly related to my tablet. The good news is that it's on sale again for $40US with a coupon available at http://www.dealhack.com/archives/20.....raphics_t.html till May 23 2007. Those who want a tablet but can't afford Wacom's insanely expensive prices should look into this deal.
I upgraded from a 4x5 tablet and the increase in size is noticeable. The 6x8 is a good compromise for me. A good size drawing are without the bulk of the larger tablets. In fact, the overall size is not that much compare to my old one but it is actually a little thiner. But the biggest difference I felt is the increased pressure levels from 256 to 512. I like it for shading which I been getting into lately if anyone cared to noticed.
This brings up the bad. I have tons of watchers (new ones streaming in all the time for some reason) and while I love them, I rarely get comments and views especially lately. I know they're are not pr0n like I did earlier but I was hoping to get a few more feedback than I'm getting now. I used to get a decent amount on my older stuff and it did help me. Some of it was on glitches I already knew and other times I don't necessary agree with them, but it did made me think and go into directions I wouldn't have otherwise. So I definitely appreciate the little I get. This doesn't mean I want a flood of comments but enough to keep me from getting too discourage. I always have a problem with my lack of motivation which I like to change. I start on many projects but rarely finish them. I keep coming up with new ideas that I jump from one to the next. Plus I tend to forget about it. So the feedbacks and comments is what I need to keep on track as it were.
And now the ugly... or what potentially could be. I was browsing people's FA galleries (I do that a lot as my watch list can attest to) when I come across something that caught my eye and made me do a double take. I saw this submission at http://www.furaffinity.net/view/371425/ and noticed it looked familiar. A little too familiar as it turns out since the background is one of my picture here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/371341/ . Now while I'm flattered that someone liked my picture enough to use it, I did expect to be asked though. I don't want to make a huge fuss about it but still (though I witnessed huge drama over something much more minor than this, something I don't want to see here if I can avoid it). I just want the person to realize that this is a no-no. At least the person said the render is not their's but that technically that's not an excuse. I would have happily said yes. So if anyone out there want to use my works, please ask. It's more than common courtesy you know. I don't want to go copyright all over you and such.
I wrote the person a comment and I'm waiting what the reaction going to be. I want to keep it civil as possible. I don't know the person so I don't know what the response will be. I don't want the admins to involved unless I really have to so I'll wait a few days till Friday or so. That should be plenty of time reply I think.
One more thing about this incident. It kinda got me a bit paranoid. What other works of mine been used without my knowledge and permission? Someone said that they saw my early avatar when I fist joined the forum. I was concerned at first but figured that person ment to say it looked simular or something. After all I made that avatar from one of my renders (which is excusive to FA at the moment) soon after joining FA itself and signed up on the forum like a week or two later. Now I wonder if someone is going around using my likeness. I sorta feel like Dave Kelly did in a way after his own run in with Todd Goldman, abet his was more serious. Not only did Dave not get credit, but Todd made huge cash off of David and others by selling things like T-shirts (now wondering if any T-shirts with my own design floating out there). Probably not but one can't ever be too sure of such things these days. Scary.
Well, let's change the subject. I'm slowly progressing on the lineart of the 5000th pageview pic. I'm trying to use vector graphics (using bezier curves mostly) to get smoother lines. Something I haven't done much. I used it for the new logo I did here http..... I like he way it turned out so I testing the waters with it here. A major pain but not too bad since the image I'm working on it fairly symmetrical. I already did most of one side and mirror it to the next. The other side is not exactly the same so I'm slightly tweaking it so they'll be some asymmetry. I won't be using this method often, just when I think it'll work better and not too hard in the future. I hope to get the lineart up soon. Btw, I'm using almost all the linework with the mouse instead of the tablet. The tablet is not a "cure all" for everything. It works well in certain area but the mouse I still use mainly.
My original idea for the 5kth view contest was to do my first ever adult drawing (aside from quick sketches in OC). That idea fell through (but I have plans to resurrect it. more on that later).
alclave wanted a clean drawing so my new alternate idea is to have him in standing just behind and leaning on a monitor with the screenshot of the 5k page (as I mentioned in my previous journal). I like how the sketch turned out so far. I uploaded the rouch sketch to my gallery but will eventually move it to the scraps (yes, I'm one the few that actually uses my scraps). Now that I added the wings and rest of the body to the sketch, I hope it'll turn out really nice. Anyone want to see the newer sketch with the wings, let me know. Otherwise I'll skip it to the lineart when I get it done.
Now for the adult version of the 5k picture is not doing so well. My idea is a drawing of my watchers who commented in the past to write (use your imagination here) "5000 pageviews" on either my chest or on my back with my wings outstretched . I thought I get a lot of responses since it's pr0n. And we all know how much the FA watchers love their pr0n after all. However I only have one person volunteer for it so far. It'll be a while before I can start so I'm hoping I get more participants. Kinda hard to get a group "shot" with just one person you know. Let me know soon if you want in on the action.
Ok, to summarize this huge journal packed with oh so nutritious goodness:
The Good - 6x8 graphics tablet on sale again for $40US after coupon. See above for the link. I got it from an earlier sale and like it already. Good deal for those without a lot of dough to throw.
The Bad - Lots of watchers but hardly any viewage of my latest and even fewer spattering of comments. I don't want to complain but I need my sugar. The quicker I get through the latest batches, the quicker I can back to the porn (hint hint).
The Potential Ugly - Having someone use your work is a bummer. Nice that they like it and all but even nicer to be asked first. Chances are very good that I'm going to say yes anyway (unless it's really bad or something but even then).
The latest Progress - Lineart on 5k pic going well, just slow as usual. I really like the pose I somehow achieved. I usually mess up such head on views but this one looked decent for once.
Future plan - Adult version of the 5k pic still up for grabs. I haven't started on it yet so there's still time to get in on the act. It's open to anyone who had commented to me before. So join now. You know you want to.
I hope I didn't bore you with my long journal. I had a lot of ground to cover. I think I got everything but knowing me, I probably missed something. Ok, discuss.

I'm still awaiting new stuff. :) Moreover, that dragon animation you've been working on. You stopped doing it. What gives? o.o
Here in the US, a copyright is automatic whenever a work of art is created. Getting it registered helps for court battles and such but not required. But I'm thinking of putting the © character in future submissions anyway to maybe drive the point home. It's kinda sad that I have to do such things. Maybe something like "Drawing copyrighted by Montrosity and character copyrighted by such and such" incorporated in my logo or something. Probably in fairly small print as to not distract from the picture too much. I hate those huge ones that drape across the drawing. I'll investigate further into this. ','
But I already have a wacom o.o so no go there
And I wouldn't blame you if you have a fuss over that drawing...er...computer drawing...yeah (I'm one of those ppl who are very protective over my work). It's good that you wrote to the person in a civil manner, cuz sometimes I do notice a LOT that ppl don't write comments in a very mature way when they wanna say "Hey, I believe you have stolen my work and I don't appreciate that." Good to see there are some mature ppl around here who can be civil of what they say. :)
For me, I'd be more than happy if someone finds some of my B&W drawings and asks me if they can colour it. :) Just as long as they say the drawing is mine, I'm totally fine with it.
Let's just hope that the artist will be equally mature when she responds back...
(And I read a comment that alclave wrote, about the © thing. You'll notice that all my drawings have it, one hand-written © and my name, and a computer sig. I would love to have a program to made a see-through watermark, unfortunately I don't know if I have the neccessary program, so I just use Paintbrush and make a note that it's my drawing right smack dab in the middle..or wherever. And I make them in certain colours so it won't be such an eyesore).
Heh heh, I'm also one of the few who uses their Scraps gallery. :3 So far only one person has actually commented on one of my drawings there! :O
I see enough drama IRL so I really don't need to add to it online. So I try to keep it calm and levelheaded but sometimes it'll blow up despite my best efforts. Can please them all I guess.
I did send a message on FA's forum. They have a section just for such things. It'll be resolved one way or another.
For that see-through watermark, most graphic programs have layers where you can set the transparency. All you need to do is to put the watermark on the top layer and reduce the transparency till it looks the way you want it. Make sure the watermark background is clear (not white) so that the rest of the picture doesn't get washed out. Personally, I don't like it since I think it ruins the integrally of the art.
I don't know why more people don't use the scraps. Maybe people just don't realize it's there. I guess we can be unique in that way. ^_^
So much for being the nice guy here. I guess I get the submission removed but something tells me she not going to learn the lesson here (seems she had some sort of run ins with the administrators in the past). Not sure what it was though. But I'm sure that I'll be hit with drama that I tried oh so hard to avoid. I already got an expletive on a shout and bracing for some more.
To all my watchers out there, please keep your cool on this. I want to keep it clean. Let them blow up on it. It's clearly a violation and it will be taken care of soon. All they have to do is read the TOS as well understand what is a parody do and don't allow.
More on this when I get back from work. I'm sure it'll get interesting to say the least.
Strangely enough, I actually enjoy watching certain drama unfold (and NOT the kind where a girl goes up to another girl and says, "Bitch I saw you lookin' at my guy! *punchkickbite*). I can't explain it. Anything psychological fascinates me. :) However stupidity doesn't. >.-.>
Them: "oops, sorry about not asking. Could you forgive me?"
Me: "Yeah, we all makes mistakes. You're forgiven. Go ahead and use it but make sure to ask beforehand in the future."
Them: "OK, thanks. I promise never to that again."
Me: "Sure, no problem."
Unfortunately, pretty much the opposite happened. *shrugs* But it's gone now and I hope that'll not crop up in the future.
An example of parodies is what Weird Al Yankovic does (I know it music but most people know of him so it makes a good example). Weird Al takes songs and make funny versions of it (he does ask permission anyway). Since he makes his own version (this is a key point) and not simply "samples" the song. A lot of artists in the 80s got into hot water for sampling. They would take parts of songs or the whole recording and use it as a "backdrop" and record their voice on top of it. Several court cases defined that they can't do that without permission. Though I heard if the sample was less than a seconds or somesuch it's alright IIRC. Another famous example is Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony". They used a sample from Rolling Stones, got sued, and lost all rights to it. Just to should you if you're not careful. So copying willy-nilly and claiming it's a parody is not going to work. To be a parody, it has to "imitates" the original art.
I could go into more detail but hopefully this is enough information to chew on. I want to move on. I have tons of other stuff to discuss from my journal above. So, what do you think of my giftart ideas? And what about that tablet? I like it so far and is cheap enough for those sitting on the fence of getting one. Btw, is anyone reading these things?
