-Early recognition of subtle similarities to previous jobs, all of which ended in disaster. Red flags I wouldn't have recognized at a younger age.
Far from distressing, the decision has left me in a positive state of mind- more energy to put toward other projects.

It is certinally a turning point in one's life where you realize that your skils and experiance are of such a level that you can 1) be interviewed for a job which utilizes your tallents, and 2) know before being hired via the interview process that what your idea of an ideal working enviroment, and their idea are two seperate things which will not work with the other.

Personally, after a while this is why I gave up working for other people and work for myself now, it's been 3 years and I'm quite happy, and never going back.

I've no doubt you'll be happier for having declined the job. My own freelancing experience has definitely taught me that many jobs aren't worth the the trouble.

I turned down a job about a month ago in a similar fashion. I thought it would be a dream job, working for/with an idol of mine from my childhood and beyond. And it would be doing what I enjoy doing, and what I'm trained to do.

But after talking at length with the person that would be my co-worker, the things that they described about the job and company felt WAY too much like the job I just left, for those same reasons. After a long consideration, I felt that it would be better to turn it down, and rather focus on the big picture. The job would've kept me in California, which I did not want. I decided that it was better to start fresh in a new place, then drag it on indefinitely.

Too bad we missed you in LA, though. Let us know when or if you'll be up around these parts. :)
